Sparkle Narkle training with Richmond
Jed Anderson has landed a rookie spot at the Suns and former Port delistee Boyd Woodcock is training with them in the hope of getting another shot. Boyd has absolutely dominated in the VFL for The Southport Sharks playing mostly on ball.

Just had a really interesting conversation, The company I work for Sponsor an AFL club and I was talking to one of the legal team. The ALF have requested a stat dec from all sponsors that they are not paying players directly. I bet there are some (cough Geelong) clubs getting a bit nervous. Could be a standard thing but they guy I was talking too hasn't seen this before from the AFL.

Theyve been doing it for years now, probably got it down to a fine art.

Im sure its all cash and all untraceable too.

I would be interested also in what close family members are receiving from sponsors.

It will be about ****ing time the AFL looked into the shonky pay schemes. Geelong, Richmond, Collingwood, Hawthorn from the whispers I've heard over time, particularly some 'interesting' real estate 'deals'.

AFL’s big win after WorkSafe concussion probe

The AFL’s landmark concussion stance has been given a major tick of approval.
In a big win for the AFL, 7NEWS reporter Tom Browne has revealed that WorkSafe has cleared the AFL over the league’s management of concussion.

Browne said WorkSafe told him they found “no evidence” that the AFL failed to provide a safe system for work

TBH not long to go now before none of our players will have been born at Adelaide’s last premiership.

What is it, maybe five or six years, tops?
I think Essendon now have a player born after their last finals win, let alone flag

Great to see the AFL is not scared of the Socceroos success at the World Cup.

For years the AFL has implemented a strategy to remain in the news cycle throughout the offseason. They'd have had something lined up to hit the papers regardless of whether the World Cup was on or a success or not. It's a good strategy.

No doubt.

However, this particular bit of news comes across very reactive and a little desperate TBH.

With the hawthorn investigation on you'd expect they'd have been focussing on something celebrating aboriginal footballers. If it's desperation, it's not just about the World Cup, it'd also be about the shitstorm going on in the background.

So its pure coincidence they announce an AFL game that includes a multi cultural team from all across the world 6 hours after the Socceroos qualify for the round of 16 and thats all anyone in the media is talking about?

They'd have had this planned awaiting the best time to deploy. Yes the timing is not a coincidence, but the strategy isn't World Cup dependent. And the indigenous team had to play someone, the All Stars preseason concept seems dead. If they could cobble together a competitive LGBTQ.... team then I'm sure they'd have gone with that. So outside of the all stars concept playing an actual AFL club, there's not really any other way to put 22 players on the field and have an actual contest.

Mitch Hinge is our youngest Premiership Baby at 24 years - 26 June 1998

Lachlan Murphy missed our last flag by 2 months - 4 December 1998

We have 15 players still on our list born before our last flag

This year has pretty much been a year round football year with matches played across 11 months of the year.

AFLW January-April
AFL March-September
AFLW August-November

To be honest, I’m glad there’ll be a few months without matches. Football fatigue definitely kicked in towards the end of the second AFLW season.

We’ve heard this before and soccer hasn’t made any ground since the last time it was said.
It will never take off here just as afl wouldn’t anywhere else.

Yeah, but now I am starting to get into the "How long till footy's back" mode. I think there needs to be a 3-4 week break between the men and women, then a 3-4 week break between the women and men.

At least none of them were born after our last finals win. ;)

I wouldn't say never, but agree AFL will remain dominant for the near future.

However, suggesting the AFL aren't scared of soccer is completely untrue.

AFL is dominant in 5 states so has a stranglehold on a population base of 13 million people (Vic,SA, TAS,WA,NT). They are in a war trying to grow the game in QLD/SYD where Rugby is trying equally as hard to maintain their dominance.

There is no growth for the AFL - outside of Australia. NRL and AFL are fighting tooth and nail to mantain and fighting each other.

Soccer looms as a distinct threat to both.

When the 2 highest sporting salaries for an AFL player in 2022 are former AFL players turned punters - Michael Dickson and Cameron Johnston who's combined salaries are almost half of the Crows Salary Cap for 40+ players - it shows how insignificant (from a financial perspective) AFL is.

The issue for the AFL is that without growth - every sport is a realistic threat and a serious threat. You can see the insecurity through the media, the rule changes, the press releases etc.

The AFL is, rightfully so, scared that little Jonny is changing his Christmas present request from a Rankine Jersey to a Goodwin Socceroos/Adelaide United one. That little Jonny decides to play soccer instead of Auskick. That mum and dad go to a soccer game. THis builds and builds.

Don’t get the sport of soccer and the A League confused.

And look back to 20 years ago. There was no A league.

Now there is a 12 team league. 6 games a week for 26 weeks for 156 games - with an average attendance of 10,000. Thats 1.56 million people attending over the course of a season. Not an insignificant amount.

For reference in 2022 - AFL 18 team league. 22 rounds (considering the bye) at 9 games a week for 198 games with an average attendance of 31,000. Thats 6.13 million people attending over the course of a season. 20 years ago average attendance was 32,000.

The AFL rightly see most other sports as genuine competitors for young talent. They don't have the luxury of a year long seasons like international sports. I'm only guessing, but I'd imagine that a fair % of local league soccer fans have an international club(s) that they're equally as interested in. Ensuring they remain relevant in the offseason is about the most unremarkable aspect of their management of the game. That something on note came out during the world cup being held during our offseason is less by design and more by SOP.

If that is what determines AFL's financial insignificance, how does our elite soccer competition stack up?
