Had a whinge about this on the main Women’s football board just now but watching a few games today has really reinforced how AFLW guernsey’s now look like cheap knock-offs since they removed the AFL logo from the chest last season.

That peach coloured AFLW logo with some stupid white lines is an utter shithouse logo, the whole league has pretty much been poorly marketed for years and the crap logo is just another part of it.

Yes, the main thing Port did "wrong" was be in a two-team town with the most successful AFLW team.

In an ideal (not for us) world they would have taken anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3 of our team and built from there. Instead they got a total of five players including Jasmine Simmons who doesn't really count anyway. Meanwhile we got back their second selection from the only uncompromised draft they've had access to so far. They'll get better within a few seasons because there is serious SA talent around, but for now they're really starting from scratch.

That being said, there is obviously something not quite right with their gameplan. At one point today in the second quarter Sydney were leading the uncontested possession count 41 - 2. That's two uncontested possessions in more than a quarter of football! You just can't do that and expect to kick a winning score. Either there is a serious lack of workrate with players not running to create options, or else they're just not being used.

Anyone follow this comp close enough to understand what Port have done wrong.

Did they recruit the wrong mix of players setting up their club?

They just lost to another of the new franchises. Last year Port beat them by 10 goal, today they lost by 15 points.

Was told by some involved in women's footy that Port didn't really care about the women's side and only got one because everyone else did - and it is showing

In the lead up to 2017, all clubs except Essendon, Gold Coast, Hawthorn and Sydney wanted a team. Port Adelaide, GWS and I think West Coast put in a half arsed attempt. Port soon dropping out not putting in a bid in their quest to focus on China instead (lol).

GWS only got a team because Sydney didnt. While Adelaide only got a team because we took it seriously, putting in the heavy lifting to set up the NT deal. (There were genuine concerns at the time SA Football was too weak - Heck, Queensland was stronger than SA back then)

By the time it came around to expansion, everyone (Well, maybe not Port) saw the benefits, and every club who didn't have a team applied for it other than Port Adelaide (Doubling down on China) and Sydney (Acknowledged they didn't have the facilities to support a team)

Basically, all teams that wanted in in 2017 had a team by 2020 (Plus Gold Coast who put in a 2019 bid, and came in to weaken Brisbane).

Hawthorn and Essendon are both taking it seriously now realising the benefits, and if you took bids on face value, probably would've been in in 2020 rather than Richmond/St Kilda. But Richmond/St Kilda had the goodwill of applying at the beginning. - But that Richmond build was unprofessional af. Didn't the Richmond list manager make herself the final signing of the team?

2022 expansion was forced by Hawthorn and Essendon being desperate to be in, and the AFL pulled Port Adelaide in when they had no genuine interest in having a team (In 2010 when the PAFC and PAMFC merged, they also brought in PAWFC, but they folded them at the conclusion of 2018 - A girl I went on a few dates with played for them, but had to go to North Haven after that) - Sydney always said when they felt they were ready (facility wise) they'd apply. But they didn't get them built until this year. If Sydney had their way they probably would've looked to either a 2023, or more realistically a 2024 entry. But they got brought in early too by the AFL. At least they intended to join. Do we even know whether Port wanted to do that?

They had the perfect recruit option in J Bates from Glenelg who won the Magarey in 2022

Knocked her back and she then signed for Collingwood vflw side

ACL for Chiocci, at 34 years of age that could almost be career over for her.

Whenever I think of Chiocci, all I can think of is her getting pissy at Marinoff on-field in that Fearless documentary a couple of seasons back, screaming "you are such a dog!" after Marinoff gave away a free, haha. Pretty good player though, fingers crossed she can get back again.

Thought the guernseys looked different. I don't like how the NAB logo looks bigger than the AFLW logo. Even though they are allocated the same sized box, it just makes the AFLW logo look small and insignificant.

from a fair distance too - would have put money on it falling short when realising she was gonna take the set shot
Lucky she kicked it when she did

She had to play on to gain the extra distance. If she stayed behind the mark, the kick falls short.

I'm going back through and re-doing it all as I had a few small mistakes in the post I made earlier in the year.

The Club vs Est and Est vs Est I haven't re-done, but it'll be easy doing it the way I'm going to do it, rather than manually like last time.

It seems to be they’re more focused on ‘Adelaide = bad’ than anything else. It’s looks increasingly clear Arnell was picked as coach because she played for a side that beat us in a GF. Then they’ve tried to adopt their traditional method of being ‘A team of champions’ by recruiting high profile players like Phillips and Saint but not developing any players.

From the outset, we’ve been focused on building a champion team. Sure, Phillips was outstanding, but we also developed kids, and we’ve seen the fruit of that even today

Bad coaching is ports main issue.
