The Victorian fan response to having to play on a Thursday is hilarious. They’re all cracking the absolute shits about it - how do we get there from work? The kids have school the next day. I live in the country so can’t get there in time or back at a reasonable hour.

Absolutely mental how school nights and work requirements and travel time don’t exist in other states, what a weird country this is.

They’ve genuinely never considered it, just gladly gone along because the AFL suggested West Coast would host Thursday, and now that it’s happening to them it turns out Thursday footy is a crime against humanity. Outstanding.

For a city that prides itself as being "the sporting capital of the world" and a city that never sleeps the amount of melting over a Thursday night game is ridiculous.
So you rock up to work or school a little ruff on friday.. who cares?

It's also stupid given the higher density levels of population in Melbourne. Like, less would be travelling to that than the Eagles match.

Why have a Thursday game anyway. No game on Sunday is a terrible idea.
I prefer Thursday games to Sunday ones given that there’s a bye before the finals (otherwise , Sunday results in too long a break in the lead up to the first game )

Honestly I think the AFL are counting on the demand for Tigers v Hawks to be enough to be able to get away with the less desirable (from a fan POV anyway ) Thursday timeslot

I think they also wanted to avoid 2x Saturday games in Vic and /or a 2 day break between our game /the Sydney showdown

So I assume it's
Thur: Rich v Haw
Fri: Mel v Geel
Sat: WCE v Col, Syd v GWS

Fri: Loser Rich/Haw v winner Mel/Gee
Sat: Loser WCE/Col v winner Syd/GWS

Fri: Winner WCE/Col v winner Friday semi
Sat: Winner Rich/Haw v winner Saturday semi

So best case scenario, we win both home finals and get an extra day's break into the granny.

Unless they give Richmond the Friday night prelim and their opponents come off a six-day break. I can see that happening actually.

That's a rather small niche to be appealing to, especially for a sport.

Seriously, what? Was that a typo?
Ah no typo sorry. Just an old saying. Whoops sorry.

I meant to say their SUPER ratings.

Yeah traditionally the higher placed prelim host gets the Friday night prelim . Our best hope of getting it is if Hawthorn beat Richmond .

I wonder if they'd put our prelim on the Saturday afternoon rather than night to maximise the time between that and a potential grand final, particularly since there'd be a chance Hawthorn/Melbourne/Geelong win, they'd want to fly home that night and start preparing.

Or whether they'd just say nights rate better, **** the teams.

I think you know the answer to that.

They could have done a Friday night double header, start at 6.15 EST for the Vic game, and then a 7.30 WST time for the game here.

I’ve been a long-term advocate for Friday night double headers and have even made at least one thread on the topic :D
So I love this idea , but I don’t think it was ever going to happen for finals :(

That is how ageing works.

Not always

All the Thursday night final bullshit from Victoria is incredible.

Isn’t the first game of the year A) between two Vic sides and B) on a Thursday night? How’s it any different?

Thursday game in Perth
Vics: "Great! I love Thursday night footy. We should play games in this slot all season."

Thursday night game in Melbourne
Vics: "This is a disaster. The AFL must be trying to keep demand for tickets down. No one's going to go, it's such a shit time slot. Why do we even have Thursday night games? Stupid Channel 7. Ground will be mostly empty."

Of course the real beauty of the situation is we got to see both of these reactions in the space of 24 hours. I don't often approve of the AFL but they've really brought some quality schadenfreude here.

Last minute flip, too. Eddie must have called Gil.. Treloar might be touch and go. Simmo had the same mail as me and was quoting Thursday night in his post game presser.

There was an unusually long gap between the end of the St Kilda vs North game and the announcement of finals venues/times. Last couple of years that's been almost instantaneous.

AFL definitely changed it's mind.

It's also unusual for a QF to be the last game. Went back to 2012 and couldn't find a year when the QF was played after both elimination finals

Someone got in the ear of the AFL and I doubt very much it was us
