GWS's huge draft hand

The move of Tanner Bruhn to Geelong means GWS now has five of the first 19 picks - 3, 12, 15, 18 and 19 - in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

Is something big brewing at the Giants before the trade deadline? Keep an eye on our Indicative Draft Order, which is updated after every deal is done.

The tone of the AFL journo here seems to suggest this is a good thing for GWS.

They have 3 because they were hot garbage in 2022. They have 12 and 19 because one of their best players has been traded to a Victorian club in his prime.

They have 18 because one of their best prospects has been traded to a Victorian club (who just won the premiership).

They have 15 because Brisbane made an odd trade. Good on them for capitalising on that one. The F2 has probably gone because they expect to trading some former first round picks back to Victoria next season. Further to that there are more rumours that 4 more best 22 players may be traded during this period.

Is something big brewing? It looks like a rebuild fueled by magic beans. And 3 more trades back to Victoria in the next 2-5 years. This is disaster for GWS' list and it continues every off-season. A balanced media shouldn't be cheering this, they should be criticising the massive and continual lack of player retention from the most recent expansion clubs.

This shouldn't be complex. The player's contract shouldn't change.

I imagine the Geelong staffer walked into the AFL office with the GC staffer on one of those little harness leads that weirdo parents put their kids on so they don't get distracted and wander off.

Ned Guy is the Head of Player Movement at the AFL?!?

Gee whiz didn’t he blow up the Pie’s salary cap?

Nah, he just took the fall for it. Those big contracts would have been signed off by the footy manager, CEO and probably the board.

I can just see Eddie ringing around to get him a job after he took one for the team.

Ah the old quirk hey.
Will never forget the "fixture quirk" that gave Richmond 7 home games in a row to end 2019.

My fav was the was Stephenson quirk for the Pies that allowed him to back from his suspension and play a game before finals due to the wording/timing of the suspension.

Oh then there was the Bont one where GWS didn't submit their Concussion report showing that a player had been concussed in the correct time frame so it had to be excluded when considering if the Bont should have been punished for a hit/rough tackle.

I dunno, arguing an action 100m away from the ball was 'in play' rates highly.

No ****ing way!!! Is it actually possible to get booted out of the boys club? That is actually hilarious, and the irony of the bloke who blew up Collingwood's list (Hi Brodie Grundy!) moving into a role where he seemingly has some sort of oversight over every club's list could not be greater.

You see the most extraordinary levels of incompetence by some people and then they just pop up somewhere random elsewhere in the industry a few years later. You see the same shit in the business world outside of footy and sport, with a lot of crossover going on...

Also putting aside the above for a moment... what on earth would be in the job description for the "Head of Player Movement" in the AFL? Job responsibilities include a colour-coded spreadsheet of all players in the AFL correctly allocated to their team... Yep, that's pretty important - we need to know who's playing for who... OK, that's 1 day of work there... C'mon, surely that's not a job that needs a single person dedicated to it - let's give him some credit and say it's a pretty busy week and a half for the bloke right now but what the bloody hell would he do for the other 50 1/2 weeks of the year?
