I think that's the same though. Even if you are contesting the ball do it late and make contact with the player who got there before you and you will miss games. The league are asking and the game is going in the direction of each individual contest you cant just go 100% to hell with the consequences.
The game has sped up. There are so many more instances/contests in games where these things can happen. It's seems its perhaps lose that battle to win the war.

I often think what I would say as a coach in that I don't think your players going all out at a contest and getting smashed...while brave...isn't the best as it has too many consequences for the team. Have you already made the sub? You will be missing that player next week. How many times has it happened to him recently could it be a career ending hit?
There is a balance about when to go and when not to that I think players need to be aware ie. pick your battles.

Obviously everyone going 100% every time is the best spectacle for the game but with the speed its played at and 360 degree action concussions are resulting and the AFL are trying to stop them. It will affect that % rate that people contest at and the game will be slightly lesser for it.
I agree 100% with all of that.

I just can't see Maynard being suspended in 2023 if he takes the mark. But I expect that to change.

I think we'll end up with something like Gaelic football in terms of physicality. I could handle that.

I completely agree but be careful, you'll be accused of "victim blaming".
It's two separate issues. I agree players should be encouraged to quit after x amount of concussions but just because someone has had a few concussions doesn't absolve you of any responsibility when you hit them in the head.

AFL going hard at the option of smothering the ball entirely, as opposed to the twisting of the body after the smothering motion.

Both sides hell-bent to lose this one.

The bit of testimony that is most bullshit is "I decided to come forward, but as you can see, I jumped straight in the air."
I call rubbish on a straight up jump. the guy launched forward with full momentum.

And now they bring in the Biomechanist to explain why maynard isn't a moron and it was all fine and there's no possible way we can avoid players getting their heads caved in during smothering attempts.

Nothing to see here, move along.

When I first saw it I thought he'd get off.

The more I watch it I think he should be suspended, putting the arms out is a natural reaction to someone who is bracing and hasn't seen someone, not twisting your shoulder forward.

Professor Cole: "His primary focus was on the ball."
He is a biomechanic professor only. How can he know Maynard‘s primary focus?

On the contrary, if Maynard primary focus was on the ball, he would have fly to the right (where the ball was) with both hands closer together, like you see in soccer goal keeping.

Funny how in Maynard’s evidence he says he jumped straight up and touched the ball. That’s bullshit

Looks like he had forward momentum rather than straight up.
