The holding the ball stat's just for round 11...

That's 69 of 980 tackles rewarded. Seems well out of whack. That's a touch over 7% of all tackles rewarded.

Would be curious to know total tackle stats for the equivalent round from 2006 and 2015 to get a gauge of the tackle volume changes and the strike rate of tackles made to tackles rewarded.

The obsession with not paying free kicks is a blight on the game. The game is far more open and free flowing when the umpires call the basics - htb, improper disposal, holding the man/tackled without it etc - and that's what they claim all these contorted "interpretations" are in aid of.

The only free kick they are interested in paying is insufficient intent to keep the ball in play because a free kick is "faster" than setting up for a throw in.

The VaFL is run by idiots.

The HTB is the 'topic of the round', last week was WA teams travel, it changes every week - except for Harley Reid contract discussions.

Really the AFL is probably happier with talking about HTB than the Freo time wasting free from Friday. That's now ancient history.

The non HTB call against Crouch on the weekend was one of the worst.

The only way he ended up getting a disposal away was when Jack Williams let go of his pinned arm to suggest “WTF” to the umpires who were standing around watching Crouch wave the ball around in his free hand. Yet if Williams slams Crouch to the ground with the arm still pinned he’ll cop weeks. Bush league stuff.

One immediate thing that could be done is have the grand final parade held in the hometown of the higher placed grand final team. They all know travel is taxing, so why should a lower placed Victorian team get less disruption to their routine? Victorians can still have their day off the day before the GF if they really want.

Money + Playing under Hardwick + Out of the fishbowl that is Melbourne

If he's playing next year then it will be at Gold Coast IMO

Surely he’s just biding his time before coming the Sergeant at Arms of the Rebels’ Victorian chapter?

Showed glimpses last week but he’s looked a shell of the player he once was the last couple of seasons.

Montagna has very good input on this in his FootyTalk show with Nick Reiwoldt - it's a good listen [YouTube]
I find it is one of the better conversations on footy.

Agree re not paying free kicks.

Not HTB, but go back to the Melbourne game, 1st quarter where Lever gets KO by Darling.
Seconds before it should have been 100% front on contact to Waterman, yet ump calls play on, and Lever dives towards the ball and slams his head into the oncoming Darlings thigh.

If the ump blows the whistle, I feel Darling would have had enough time to pull up or Lever doesn't go for the ball, but he doesn't and we end up with a play out the rest of the game with concussion, which the AFL is, apparently, doing there best to remove from the game.

During 2020 when they had shorter games the scores dried up. The umpires suddenly went hot on htb for about 5 weeks. That was the highest scoring part of the season. Free kicks stop congestion and open the game up.

Barry Hall is lining up for goal after the siren in 2006 from the boundary line in an alternate universe.

The same alternate universe that Sampi gets a free and kick after the siren in 2005.
Re watched it - no, he was tackled straight over the line as he took it - and hand balled. Throw in.

I'm talking actual prior - Ref: Kerr v Hall ... perfection
