It was a weird year for games vs them. They blitzed us in the first game vs them (89 - 17 at one point) before they put the cue in the rack and we closed it to 111 - 81 at the end.

Second game (the infamous 'parity' match) we jumped them in the first quarter before easing to a 104-80 win

They were relying heavily on jumping teams in the first quarter and coasting to wins after that (due to their aging list probably), but seemed to be running out of steam by the end of the season and lost 4 of their last 6 games.
Thats first derby was the line in the sand for us. Few players have spoken about how they went in at half time absolutely livid and thing changed after that.

It was actually their style at the time.
Run like absolute bastards for 5 minutes then interchange off for 2 then run etc. Combine the manic style with a rugby maul style of moving the ball forwards at all costs. Game after game they'd use the frenetic pressure to build up a lead and then hang on.
It was even evident in quarters.
Q1 - Freo would dominate until maybe the last 5 minutes when the opportunity for a couple of junk time goals might arise.
Q2 - Freo rules until about 10 to run (real time clock, not actual game time 20 minute Q clock).
Q3 - could be a 50/50 Q.
Q4 - Freo were usually outscored. The only question was whether they'd built a big enough lead to coast home.
Often a 10 goal lead by half time and it was over. If you could keep it down to 6-7 goals at 3/4 time you were every chance.

It wasn't the aging list. It was just the game plan. Made them cooked for the last part of quarters and most of the Q4. Also led to the running out of steam at the end of the year. Travel of course exacerbated this.

It was the reduced interchanges that made this style impossible to play.

The crazy part of the 2015 GF is that Hawks smacked us but they weren't that much better than us in the game. Everything went their way and we were clearly overawed by the occasion. The game was there for the taking and we didnt show up.

My friend had his wedding on that day. And after finding out the result before the reception started, I have not ever watched it since. Maybe one day when I get that bored I might...

A huge post game celebration was planned and ultimately scrapped when they lost.

They got way ahead of themselves on the Freo board about it getting arrogant and counting the win before it happened.

Was a glorious backfire, their mods had to end up hiding the thread.

We have very different memories of that game. They outplayed us 1000%.

They used the dimensions of the G very well against us, Hodge slotting that ridic goal from deep in pocket in Q1 - that shit would never have happened at subi... it fuelled alot of the dimensions arguments for mrp and optus dimensions

We kicked 1.5 to 5.0 in the first quarter and that was the game (our senior players missing set shots etc). The start of 2018 felt so similar (us playing alright but everything going right for the pies) that I felt sick in the guts. But we all know what happened next.

I've rewatched 2005 and marvelled at how we nearly stole the game (Woosha rebuilding the forward line in the second half was amazing coaching). But I can't bring myself to watch 2015.

I remember the excitement all week leading up to the game. Eagles were back after missing finals 5 times in 7 years (including winning a spoon). I travelled to the MCG to watch it and it was an amazing sunny 30 degree day. Everything was in our favour, we even kicked the first goal! Then Hawks went to another level and it all fell apart. I had to sit there in the stands not knowing if I want to walk away and get drunk in the bar, or sit there and watch the car crash.

Start of Q2 for Hodge. Ridiculous and arrogant goal - one you only get when it is your day. Otherwise 50 per cent at best. But a 'morale boosting' goal no doubt.

While they did outplay us how much of that is due to the fact we didn't show up? That we allowed them to outplay us?

And yes ... Subi team v team very familiar with MCG, didn't help (but not an excuse).

Q1: 6 scoring shots to 5, half time: 12 to 11. They kicked straight for three quarters, we kicked points.

I remember us playing well in the second quarter until it came to kicking a goal. 9.1 to 1.7 is only two shots difference.

We were also on a run until Darling did Darling things.
Yeah Shuey not handballing to Cripps for the gimme and missing the dribbler himself, Nic had one bounce on the goal line back into play then Darling happened, also just before half time Hurn needlessly calling for the ball off JK then missing the shot, that's from memory, I also have never watched it again
