Doggies could've won.

Unfortunately Carlton's luck in that game sets them up well due to the fact that they've got literally the easiest run of games ever.

But in all honesty, I'd rather keep playing the harder teams and learn from it than to beat the minnows and then get found out in the big times like we did last year (and like the Blues will eventually).

Good luck with that.

The whole ‘probably the best midfield ever assembled on paper’ coupled with absolutely no forward method beyond hoping Naughton or Hannan jump over someone must be wearing thin.

Beveridge is Buckley level when it comes to the failure to utilise talent.

Has also run 2 perfectly capable key defenders out for Gardiner and Cordy while they are shocking in defence

The Western Bulldogs and GWS are a prime examples as to why 'you can't have enough gun mids' is one of the worst strawman arguments I football.

Sure, in a vaccuum having 7-8 stud midfielders is theoretically better than having 4-5 and a couple of lesser role players running through there. But there are only so many midfield minutes to go around, and you run the risk of bending your lineup out of shape trying to fit everyone in. Libba, arguably the best clearance mid in the competition was having to play a significant portion of last week as a crumbing forward.

But the reality is that having so many guys needing midfield time and on big $$$s means there is an opportunity cost in using those resources (trade capital and salary cap room) to get.... I dont know, maybe a second functional key forward and some key defenders outside of Alex Keath.

It works when those ‘gun mids’ have the ability to be dangerous forward or a weapon off half back and not just running around killing time until they get back on the ball. Also wasn’t the story libba played mainly forward as he struggled since contracting covid, so they were easing him back into it.

The difference is that Carlton have a balanced midfield. Good spread of strength/size, attack and defence. They also have an elite KPF and KPD. For us it was always obvious that we had glaring holes in every area of the ground. We barely made finals with a soft fixture. I expect Carlton to comfortably make it. Their midfield + spine will make them more competitive in a final than what we were IMO. Our midfield is always exposed as undersized in finals and it’s hilarious how we still run with the same set up. Blues have Cripps, Hewett and Kennedy who thrive on contested football, which is what finals are made of.

I’m still annoyed that we didn’t go for Hewett as he would’ve balanced our midfield.

I actually think that there's enough versatility in there to work, particularly Bont and Treloar who can genuinely impact forward. There's probably some salary cap stuff there though.

Having said that Sam Darcy is physically a million miles away and JUH is just as likely to become a taller Jeff Farmer at this point, which is still very good but they just get nothing structural out of it apart from Naughton at this stage. It's almost gone back to 2016 areas where they are going to start deliberately scumming the ball in so they can fight for it on the ground.

But its Bevo so instead of playing a perfectly functional if one dimensional Sweet with English he plays without a second ruck and 1 tall forward.

Hats off to Vossy.
He's got a good team on paper to be an excellent team on the field.

lovely balance across the lines and reaping some benefits of 3 fit superstars in Cripps, Curnow and McKay.
Walsh with some match fitness and Cerra back is going to make them ominous.

playing top 4 footy as it is.

Doggies...new Crows. they have not handled that GF loss well.

Yes I think my hate respect is going to dissipate pretty quickly if they continue in this vain and we're dishing up the piss week footy that is our trademark.

Having said that, I did warn the community to come to terms with what Carlton would become.

It'll be the opposite for me. I'll hate them even more if it's even possible

i haven't been kicked off here yet for it, so ill say it again
I like them up and about when we are too.

It's my favourite rivalry.
I like the banter with their fans. their arrogance when they're up is like ours. It smacks of self entitlement and superiority.

I'd love a GF between the two of us.

Bevo is a classic siege mentality coach, seen similar examples of teams with coaches like this before. At some point the constant protection of the players from criticism results in them lacking resilience and grit.
