It's a common belief that a coach has 10 years to win a flag on average.

Port would start thinking about life after Hinkley pretty soon you'd reckon.
Funny. Four games ago they were playing off for a spot in the GF.

Always high expectations from a club which just expected to win premierships every year in the SANFL for decades.

The first question I'd ask about Hinkley and Cameron is whether we think their sides have been set up to maximise the potential on the list?

There isn't really a need for a second question as they so clearly do not.

Short of prelims and 1 year contract extensions both should be moved on. Neither should be re-signed until the year is done.

Would GWS have a Premiership if Clarkson was coaching them instead of Cameron? I would say almost definitely.

Port I'm less certain on, but I also don't think Hinkley is anything special as a coach so either a big reshuffle of the assistant coaching ranks there, or time to move him on.

Agree . Cameron has been unlucky with injuries along the journey and they probably should have played in another GF but * years is a long time if you are not winning one. Giants will not sign him again unless they do something special like make a prelim final. The Clarkson factor will see to that.

Ken is done. Tenth year , played in 5 finals series has a very good win loss record but he has not been able to get them that step further and they have a record of wilting under pressure more often than not. they did have two heartbreaking prelim final losses by under a goal in that time but nothing has really changed a lot for them.

Is Hinkley the new Eade?

Indictment on our defence that Weideman got 7 shots on goal
There is a reason. Port went ultra hard defensive. The strangled Melbourne for a lot of the night with players behind the footy. At various stages they ran 8 or 9 defenders in the back half. Melbourne responded by pushing numbers forward but it was a shit fight and only Gawn and Jackson took any marks. Compare that to how exposed our blokes where and the leading space we gave Weideman. Port simply parked the bus in the leading lanes. Problem for them is by doing it they could not score although they did butcher at least 4 chances.
It was one of the strangest games I have watched. Melbourne where on top in the back half and the middle but Port just chocked them all night. Melbourne really struggled most of the game to get anything going in their forward line for long periods. The pressure from Port was decent but they could not kick a goal and had very few options forward because most where plugging the back half. It looked bad on the score board and they had some horrible turnovers but they also played a strong defensive game and although they lost the contested work by 20 odd they had pressure on Melbourne's outside work which made a lot of their work after they won the ball very messy. It was a great plan but it was also a bad plan because it put too much pressure on their scoring and allowed Melbourne's defenders to dictate. I can not remember a game where Oliver and Pertacca where both continually under pressure all night when they had the footy.
Ports numbers back exposed the outside of Melbourne's zone as well but the price was May , Lever and max where often sitting back the chop off any attack.
How good is Max Gawn ? his work rate is as good as I have seen from any ruck I remember. He is forward he is back , he kicks goals , he takes marks at curtail times. Then you have Jackson to provide some marking forward and take the forward half ruck when Max is playing defensively.

He was plucked by Hawthorn from SA wasn't he?
Certainly has shown he is willing to live in SA
Yep.
The race is on. Clarkson will be sitting back and going over the lists of at least 3 clubs. Personally I would be thinking GWS and GC over Port.

Always thought port had done well recruiting in recent years: Butters, Rozee, Duursma, Jones, Bergman, Georgidies, Drew and now Sinn. The assumption is though, that Rozee and Butters become the real stars out of that group which looks questionable

That’s because we took the game to Melb a bit more, not played ultra defensive like Port. Much prefer our method
