I dont know why it's so odd to people that Lyon has no interest in applying for a job.

It is so far beneath him it's not funny.

He's as good a coach as there is.
You can be a great coach in terms of previous results but still not fit a club. Lyon had some very messy interpersonal / work stuff in his recent past. I would have been pissed if we let him wander in without at least some process. Would have reeked of exactly the shoddy lack of diligence that has messed us up a number of times in the last 10 years.

So basically Ratten was pleading for his job for 7 hours…but Bassat seemed to have made his mind up even before review was read …(Merrick was on the review panel)

In fairness to the Saints, there are times you realise someone isn't right for the job. Seems to have happened with both Ratten and Rutten. Whilst the exits could be handled better, sacking a coach is usually messy. Both Ratten and Rutten seem to be nice guys and don't come across as passionate and emotive as other coaches, which was always a concern for me with Rutten. Maybe it is just perception rather than reality but you can see with say Chris Scott that he is 110% invested. Brad seemed like that when he was coach of Kangas too. You see it with Hardwick and Clarkson and others too.

Wasn't Vlad in charge when they tried to punt norf to the gold coast?

And I hear he just bought a sizable property in Tassie.

(I just made that up, but knowing Vlad it could be true...)

I heard it was a stadium sized parcel of land in prime stadium type real estate Hobart. This is rumoured to be 100% possible fact.

He should try get those to go over the sideline inside the 10, that would change the game.

I guess anywhere inside the 25 would be better than going into the endzone.

I'm sure he's probably practising it, whether it makes it to gameday is a different story.

Re Hawthorn don't focus on the story, try to find the actual gap that exists between what they've lost and what they have for 2023.

Worpel is a significant factor for me, not because I think he's great, it's because if as a 6th year player he is given JOM's minutes he probably has the same output.

They haven't tired to ship him in the 2 years they have tried to ship JOM and T Mitchell.

Phillips played 4 games.

Gunston does not have an obvious replacement.

McEvoy was not a factor in 2022. Reeves and Meek are good prospects. Meeks is ready to be a number 1 (if Reeves isn't but all indications are that he is).

Mitchell gets replaced by a combination of Stephens (4th year), Maginness (4th year physical freak), Long (second year man child) and Ward (second year elite endurance athlete). It's unlikely Mitchell's total output will be replaced but that also depends on how they set up and who assumes the time. It could be Newcombe's role changes.

They've added Amon.

Is the absence of Gunston and Tom Mitchell really going to change how competitive they are, especially given natural improvement in the list?

That's not a gap between 8-10 wins and dead last in my book.

Injuries could gut the season but they'll do that to any bottom 8 side.

They'll be starting the season as one of the least experienced lists in the AFL, that usually means mid-game fadeouts and dropping games that experienced teams wouldn't due to bad decisions, and players fatiguing during the season that aren't used to carrying a full load of AFL minutes in that role.

Nik Cox is an athletic freak but he absolutely faded out as the season wore on, for example.

Oops, think I went a bit early but it will happen!

Going to be interesting to see how quickly it turns for the Saints.

There are a lot of pieces on the list and the basics required for a pretty immediate bounce (big core of experienced hard ball winners, good ruck, dominant key forward, a few good small forwards, a few competent defenders both tall and small).

They've gotten very little from Coffield and Clark to date. Hill was very good under Lyon, too. Windhager and Owens have tricks.

There is a pretty strong argument that the list is better than it was from 2008 to 2010. It's more rounded, with more different weapons even if the top 4 names are not matched.

Whether there is a plan to bring SOS in to oversee the list or not, tinkering is what is required. Go to the draft and take picks for a few years and they'll be fine.

I'd put money on them to make the 8.

Found it interesting in the press conference that Lyon said that he didn't look at the list (or at Fremantle) before he took the job. A great coach and club structure is worth more than a great list.
