I got taught routine when I was playing junior Rugby League goal kicking. It is important but you can still get the yips if you lose confidence. It also will not help if you have a flaw in the ball drop .i cant say i ever had anything of a routine as kicking for goal....not my forte
but if its anything like serving in tennis or a golf swing it's primarily between your ears on game day, but down to nailing a routine in training and once you've got that, stick with it.
i have no idea what McKay's approach is. he looks genuinely confused on what to do with any given shot.
Weideman at least has his routine...he's just not that accurate.
I do think that a lot of the round the corner misses are more incorrect technique. The kicking sweet spot is larger than a drop punt but a lot of players hold the ball wrongly or have a fault in the ball drop and hit the wrong part of the ball .
McKay needs to get a routine going but he also has flaws in his set shot kicking either way .
