They made a big fuss about Tayla Harris being photographed kicking a ball too. And they made a big fuss about Conor McKenna spitting on a patch of grass at training. And they made a big fuss about Steven Coniglio's ridiculous wedding (no I'm not kidding). Maybe they just like to make a fuss..?

And with all that said. You know Buddy Franklin, greatest of all time goal kicker and all that jazz? He's basically vanished. Hung up the boots and he's outta there, didn't do the press conference for his own retirement, not gonna do the lap of honour on Grand Final day as it currently stands. And you know what, they make a big fuss about not being allowed to make a fuss too.

You're never going to change the tabloids or the dickheads on BigFooty and Facebook, so there's really no use worrying about them. Be who you are and tell who you want to tell. But you don't have to participate in the press conference, the elephants, the magicians and the fireworks if you don't want to.
And the only reason there ha not been a fuss about AFLW is there where players who we already knew had same sex partners or where married before they played the game so now the young players do not have to come out. I agree it is just another situation where someone in the media needs an angle. The reason that various situations get hidden is the shit storm of people falling over themselves to comment publicly always follows. I think a lot of us would not really bat an eye lid if someone made an announcement or we just found out.

The Silence: AFL's Last Taboo

8:30PM - 9:16PM

The AFL is the only major sporting code that hasn't had a single elite male player publicly identify as gay. Louise Milligan investigates the AFL's culture and asks what has created this silence?

Jesus, even 4 Corners doesn't get it.

You don't 'identify' as gay.

South Park covered this about 15 years ago.

A gay man likes penises instead of vaginas.

If you are a dude and you like penises instead of vaginas, you're just gay.

Everyone wants to identify as something these days.

And we'd have to spank Collingwood too so it's bloody unlikely, but not impossible, is all I'm saying.

If we win and Brisbane win though they could go top.

True, but doesn’t really matter, and would arguably be even better for Collingwood.

That’s still a double chance, home qualifying final for Collingwood - it would just likely mean it’s against Port instead of Melbourne. Which they’d probably prefer.

Those are neither here nor there. A sliding doors moment is supposed to be a point in time where one particular decision has broad-reaching consequences. Oliver, Curnow and McCluggage instead of Parish, Francis/Weideman and McGrath isn't that... We'd still have holes all over the field.

The sliding doors moment was getting to the start of 2017 and thinking "* it, the old blokes look great at pre-season training. Let's get some more 26 year olds and try to pinch a flag before they retire". And then persisting with the same strategy at the end of 2018 using both our 2018 and 2019 first round picks. You can blame the saga for the period from 2011 to 2016, but the 5 years after that were pure folly.

The sliding doors moment before that was when they appointed Xavier Campbell as COO and promoted him to CEO a few months later in 2014, who then appointed Worsfold in 2016 to execute a 5 year plan from 2017-2022, Richardson in 2018 and allowed Dodoro to outgrow his boots and take over half the footy department, but that all ultimately falls back to Paul Little's sliding doors moment of 2013 to promote Campbell straight from middle management with no football experience.

And before that, the decision to make Bomber responsible for realising Jim's ambitions at a club that lacked maturity, common sense and the ability to say no, such that we also brought his silly friends over from Geelong, rode roughshod over the club doctor and got ourselves into hot water, which led to Paul Little becoming president in the first place to try and hold the place together by sheer force of will and a lot of private jetsetting.

Can only hope that David Barham's ridiculous actions of 12 months ago have somehow failed upwards to a position where the people in charge are actually competent professionals this time.
Fair points you raise - I don’t disagree with what you’re saying.

However I’d still argue that not drafting two generational talents in Curnow and Oliver (when we had our eyes on both of them) has had big consequences for us. It certainly would have put us in a much better position now if we nailed that draft class

Maybe the real sliding door moment for Essendon was when Dodoro was hired and promoted lol

First quarter of GCS v Carlton was a thing of beauty. If only they can keep it up.
Having watched the second quarter I can confirm

Gold Coast are absolute losers

Just a massive bunch of pissypants. Their motto should be “why persevere when you can just show a glimpse”.

They should perhaps become Gold Coast Suns Briefly Peeking Out From Behind A Cloud. Admittedly wordy but you can imagine a logo that works. Greyish jersey with weak yellow trim.

Time for excuses is gone. They make you proud to follow Essendon and that’s saying something given the last 20 years.

That turned into a rant but it’s only because I actually want them to succeed. And because I wanted them to bury Carlton today.

PS I will take it all back if they actually win today LOL

We never had the opportunity to take Oliver as he was drafted before our pick. And Curnow went at pick 12. 9 clubs passed on him and he was the third player Carlton chose in that draft.

yes, very disappointing by GCS since the first quarter. They got ahead of themselves. Cripps back on field too. Ah well.
