Just a reminder that nothing is ever good, or as bad, as it seems.

No one would have tipped Carlton in a Preliminary after we smacked them around.

And while our season ended badly, all it takes is a few things to go right and we could be in that same spot too.

I’m praying that the Essendon players, with this new found endeavour to be better, is saying “why not us?”

It’s time.

Can’t recall a side going out in straight sets purely on the basis of terrible finishing in front of the big sticks. Should have been straight into a prelim and had a mulligan tonight and miffed that as well.

Seems counter intuitive that Ben Brown isn’t the first bloke picked given he exclusively runs in straight lines, hits up at the ball and creates space behind. And converts his chances.
Problem is he was cooked last year. As bad as the Gawn / Grundy combo was it was not as bad as last night. Max battled hard but even a few small doses of Grundy would have helped and he could not have been worse than McDonald who played exactly like a bloke who has been injured for two years . And then you have the sub situation. Why bother having Schache as sub ? was it purely cover for max if someone stood on his foot ? Demon supporters should be questioning how they have ended up with the forward disfunction they have. It would not be a massive stretch to say it has cost them a three peat.

Not so sure about that, Dees got screwed by umpires tonight, even forgetting the goal being overturned by something that looked either not touched or inconclusive…

s**t umpiring only goes so far, kicking 9.17 won't win you many games, especially against top end teams
Yep. They missed too many chances late in the game that would have sealed it. Plus their forward entries where on the same level as ours at times.

We beat them in one quarter. They had out played us all night but kept turning the ball over.

Simon Goodwin my god. Schache an unused sub 💩

Is gawn any chance to actually ruck a f50 stoppage.
Would be if they had of played Grundy

No they didn’t.

Like, I’m the first to admit when we have been shit. We weren’t that night. Game was 50/50 for the first half and we broke it in the third. Yeah, their goal kicking was shit, but we were also playing well for that to happen.

But, let’s be simply pessimistic all the time. We are never going to get better. What did Bruno say, takes 60 years to change leadership and get better as a club. Hopefully I will be with it enough to see our Elimination Final win in 2083.

Yes they did. We ran over them in the third quarter. They turned the footy over a lot and made some poor decisions and it broke them. We played one quarter of footy to win the game. It was not just their goal kicking. It was simple skill errors. They where +16 inside 50 and +17 contested footy.

It is not about being pessimistic . It is calling it how it was. Called it on game day and calling it now. Did not say where where bad but they where better than us in the first half that night but could not convert it .

So those poor decisions had nothing to do with our pressure, nor the 30+ tackles we had, nor the 12 extra tackles we laid inside their forward 50?

Essendon, even when we win we are ****ing shit.

I did not say we where shit. I said Carlton actually played better in the first half. They did. Did not say we where bad once.
I enjoyed the win as much as anyone in the same way I enjoyed the Eagles and North wins because we won. Keep your pants on.
If you want to live in hope then go ahead. Go back and read the match thread.

All I was saying in my original post was things are never good, or as bad as it seems. Using the fact that a side we won against is now playing in a Preliminary Final.

How we won was pointless to what I was saying.

And of course I want to live in hope. Don’t we all? If I didn’t have hope that one day I see the side I support win a flag, I wouldn’t be supporting them anymore.

We all know you’re the superior footballing brain on this site. Don’t stress about it.

It’s not who you play it’s when you play them. Carlton a totally different side now to when we played them. Melbourne smacked them in the mouth in the first 15 and they got up and put the game back on their terms, we don’t have the ability to go that level.

With the same players though.

I’m not saying we are going to win the flag next year, but there were times this year we played patches of brilliant footy.

There were also patches where we played dreadfully.

Right now, we are still 50/50 in terms of brilliant patches and shit patches. I’m hoping next year, that becomes 60/40.

All I’m saying is that it won’t be shit forever. I am living with hope things will turn around within the next few years.

However reading this site at times, you would think that Essendon is going to be shit for another 20 years.

Yeh and most of those players were out of form and the game plan was not clicking, you can’t compare them now to 3 months ago.

I agree with you though, things can turn quickly (as seen with Carlton)

Well to be fair we’ve been shit for 20 years, and nothing has looked like changing for a fair majority of it. The people we now have in place at the club should give us the best chance to get back to relevancy though

The last line is not needed. I do not consider myself superior to anyone. I will make comment on things I want to make comment on. If I thought I was superior I would have said **** off you have no idea. It was a different view. That is all. You where the one with the superior reply by flat out saying "no they didn't " to my first reply then you started saying I was calling our win shit when I did not.

There is something about Goodwin. I can't quite put my finger on it.

He's not a person I would put anywhere near running a club.

There is too much smoke which relates to his integrity and intelligence.

The way he chops and changes with the forwards, it's almost like a gambling addict chasing losses.

He has already shown he has no integrity. Around $16k of bets on games while playing show that.
Melbourne have under achieved so badly and don’t l love it.

I can think of a couple of reasons

Carlton was under achieving.

2 x Coleman medallists.

Cripps.

Walsh.

A gun key defender.

Saad.

That's an extremely good spread of top end talent.

Added to that was Hewett and playing Kennedy in the middle to create a fleet of hardball tanks (Hewett and Kennedy are top end endurance runners for inside mids). They added the class of Cerra and some direction and the result was living inside the top 8 in 2022 until the last round, pushing the best teams right until the end.

This seasons they started slowly because they were trying to sort out how to take the heat out of a game and play without the ball.

Now they've found elite Cerra, the massive work rate and intensity of Cotrill, who is more effective than I first thought. Cincotta is another competitor.

Acres is a gun who stands up in heat bringing genuine physicality to elite 2-way running power on a wing.

They've got competitors all over the place. They're built for the heat of finals. We are built for circle work that can fool an uninterested Melbourne in round 5.

It's only going to get worse. Carlton is going to soon add 23 round 4 quarter Hollands, to add more elite 2 way run, and Cowan to add another dynamic to half back. TDK is looking like he will fulfill his massive potential. We are going to add Jade Gresham to our list of pissants.

🤣👍

I remember you saying during their losing streak that Voss was doing the right thing and the results would likely come.

With the re-signing of Heppell, if we are chasing Gresham these guys making decisions are stuck decades back and haven't grasped what the modern game is about.

I have to say that Carlton is not playing as well as I thought it would.

If this is what they bring to the Gabba next week they're not going to be within 5 goals of Brisbane from midway through Q2.

But I think we need to have a more sophisticated approach to analysis of how a game looked, beyond just scoring shorts.

I'll pay Melbourne a win inside 2 kicks at the absolute most based on XG as I see the flow of the game.

Melbourne jumped Cartlon. Carlton then ground Melbourne down to control the game from about half way through Q1 to half time.

The number of scoring shots didn't differ greatly until half way through Q3 and Melbourne didnt dominate the momentum of the game. If Melbourne kicked more accurately the game would reset where Carlton controlled centre clearances. That gives the Blues a crack at the Melbourne back 6 without the whole ground structure.

The teams were both missing players but it is clearly the case that McKay was the most significant out. Lever and May can't gang up on Curnow if McKay is bossing marks at half forward (which he does even when spraying kicks at goal).

I still think Carlton has the ability to click and stun Brisbane and even win the whole thing. They're a bit banged up, though. I'm also still not convinced that they're good enough outside the contest to overcome everything that would be thrown at them in the next fortnight.

Yeah, I agree with all of that.

Which makes me interested in how Scott goes in the next four years and where our build takes us. Tsatas is apparently a player that is build for where the game is heading, which is great, but what is our gameplan that makes Tsatas that player.
