good initiative, should be included in AFL though.

i also remember hearing about an app a few years ago that generally pretty successfully diagnosed concussions, is that standard practice to use or is it still in testing?
I suspect that the 21 days is the least expensive option for ensuring safety, but they think with advanced medical care and technologies like those fancy mouth guards with accelerometers in them and doctors watching for head knocks and enforcing concussion check protocols from that video hub the AFL haS set up, they can get some players back quicker (after passing all the steps in the concussion protocols).

I seem to remember studies that suggest the wearing of helmets in contact sports can actually increase incidents of concussion (see NFL) as helmets can give the wearer a false sense of protection, meaning players are more likely to lead with the head, or in the very least reduce the natural instinct to protect their head from contact.
Have heard the same and it makes sense in a contact sport where the field of play has a controlled level of danger.

Obviously bicycle helmets and helmets in motor sports where your head is getting smashed on tarmac or hit by flying bits of cars is a different scenario where helmets save lives.

Those helmets are all single use for impacts as well from memory (certainly bicycle helmets are meant to be replaced after any significant impact).

yes all of them are only good for single impact. Car and motorcycle helmets work the same as a bicycle helmet, once the polystyrene or equivalent is crushed it doesn’t spring back, so might as well not be wearing one if the one you have has internal damage.

Helmets were used as weapons in NFL for many years until they tightened last few years

Rule changes are pretty big there with regards to stopping the concussion issues.

I think if we could get to a position in our game where we didn't reward players for ducking their head to draw frees that would be big in our sport.

This really seems like a PR stunt/lip service by the AFL, all the research Ive read says helmets (whether the padded types in rugby or hard helmets like in NFL/motor sports etc) dont reduce risk of concussion.
Only last April there was a submission to the Senate Enquiry into concussion that stated this:

Hard helmets reduce risk of impact injuries like skull fractures but they dont stop the rotational movement of the brain which is what leads to concussion.

Rugby is trialling no tackles above the nipple line at lower levels in aus/uk. I used to be against that suggestion but at the end of day something needs to be done so worth a trial. Also think it would take alot of the grey out of card decisions re whether hits were intentionally high or whether they started below shoulder and ricocheted up.

yeah, it's why cricket is probably sooner or later gonna have to start having a hard conversation.

They've already limited bouncers. Can't see them outlawing them. It's more likely that players like Pucovski will be forced out.

I get that everyone is interested in the first matches by default so they want to spread them out and get them watching more of the games but in terms of a spectacle it's anti-climactic. More than I expected it to be.
I'm not in Sydney so I'm not sure what the buzz is like there. Heard Gerard and Robbo talking about how quiet Melbourne is though.

Or players like pucovski should Learn how to play the short ball to protect yourself. Clearly it worries him and he panics, should either retire from cricket or not play again until he has addressed it.

Can someone explain this to me?

Melbourne's biggest issue last year was their forward 50 inefficiency

literally NOTHING has changed.
