Melts on the Port board if they appoint Josh Carr should be good reading apparently.

Geelong will play their 9th Preliminary final under Scott. Can we have one of those?

Some fans really have it good while we're ripping our hairs out over simple skill errors.

I think they've cracked the code and can teach players to be quality footballers. It's not the theory, that's the easy part, but it's likely got something to do with asking players to play very specific roles in an environment in which there is someone who knows exactly what he needs to do, and who is able to do it, on every side of the new guy. It must make being a Geelong player so straight forward, certainly compared to being an Essendon player.

It's hard to believe that Perkins, who I do not accept has less raw ability than Holmes, wouldn't be in the midst of a different career trajectory if he was in the hoops.

I don't rate Port so I don't really have a feel for what this thrashing means but you've got Bowes (remember when Geelong was struggling to convince the industry that it wanted Bowes as much as it wanted the draft pick), Mannagh and I think Bruhn (who's caught my eye for the first time) joining Miers, Holmes and Close to add another layer of players who can get it done when it matters.

You have to back them turning the likes of Knevitt, Bruhn and Clarke into quality players. Henry and Dempsey might already be that. I really like Neale as a KPF. Conway is a gun ruck waiting in the wings, something like the physical version of Nick Bryan at 206-208cm. SDK isn't playing tonight and he's 23. O'Sullivan's a high pick you can probably pencil in at CHB in the next to 18 months. Humphreys and Mullin. It's becoming sickening.

Whatever happens this year it's the Geelong team of 2026 I'm scared of. Particularly if Cameron is still getting around.

Run the club as a business and implement a rigorous HR cycle plan like any other big business would = sustainable success.

And I don’t even rate some of the guys you’ve mentioned above.

It's weird now that I thought, prior to team selection against Geelong, that we were half a chance. We actually helped play them into finals form, but no, Chris will conveniently forget that in the presser. Campaigner.
Wait... do you actually expect Chris to credit Essendon for playing them into form a few months ago in his presser?? :joycat:

Just getting to that many is amazing.

Only caveat for me is losing a prelim is the worst of the worst.

I don't know what that feels like. I've been following Essendon for 20 years so all I know is EF losses. Never watched a winning final. Surely at least being in the final 4 is better than never contending? I'm sure GWS and Carlton last year were reasonably happy.

Port have been exposed in this way a number of times this season but I thought they had worked out these weaknesses in back end of season. Maybe they just haven't played teams capable of exposing them in this regard since the Lions.
  • Their main issues all season have been lack of decent lockdown small defenders (even houston and farrell are there for their ball usage rather than locking down). They got spanked in inside 50 ground ball gets yesterday. I recall similar numbers when they played the pies back into form back in April.
  • other than drew their midfield doesn't like two way running. If you can win the clearance battle you can open them up pretty easily as Lions did and surprisingly cats did last night.
This is why I don't understand the Parish to Port rumours, they need some more defensive starch added to their midfield, not an Aldi branded version of their existing mids.

‘96 and ‘99 were horrendous but give me losing a Prelim anyday compared to the rubbish we’ve last 20 years. At least it would mean we’d won a final.

Comes down to winning culture and leadership to drive it and picking players who have the competative edge. Perkins does have raw ability but the first sign he may not have the competitive edge was announcing he may not be the best version of himself if he went interstate. He would never be a midfielder anywhere. He does not have the natural instincts.
Clarke and Bruhn were reasonably high draft picks so the quality was there.
The code was cracked in 2006 when they all sat around and told the honest truth to each other. Since then they have had the culture and leadership that drives the program.
You can never under estimate the effect of drating natural leaders.

Geelong is an all encompassing club great coaching great development of the players that they draft. I have no doubt Perkins would be an a grader right now at a club like geelong.

And yet 16 other clubs overlooked him, including some multiple times. Huge pick by the cats.
Yeh was a great pick up. Same with them deciding to get j pod all those years ago when it was clear he was deserving and good enough for a shot at the level. Feel like way too many clubs try to reinvent the wheel with recruiting, instead of just giving guys who can play footy really well at vfl level a go. Nothing to lose by giving them a 1 year rookie deal, yet many clubs are way too stubborn

Not in the midfield.
Strong leadership helps them. On and off field. You can not drive the standards without it.

Also about drafting guys with a competative edge in what they do. Not just in attack on the ball but attitude to training and always pereparing to be better than the next bloke. It is not always a box we have ticked as far as drafting goes.
