Yeah I’m saying change the system. Not all at once, but scale it back somehow.
So, you’ve missed my point.

Jackson is purely on a ‘market’ rate of $800k because we’re stupid enough to reach and pay that.

If there were some parameters in place, clubs could manage their salaries much better.

My figures were also made up and random.

If a 4th year Jackson could earn say the top figure and that’s a hypothetical $600k then so be it.

The fact a club can just launch and outrageous bid of say $1.2M a year isn’t healthy moving forwards and is already proving to create issues of salary dump plays etc.

All I’m saying is put some parameters in place.

You don’t need to take my actual figures as gospel and argue them back at me. I find that hilarious.

Basically, should there be some sort of set figures, tiers, bonuses in place?

Or are we all happy that some kid can be offered $1m like Tim Boyd based on nothing other than ‘gee… he looks a likely type’
Look I get your overall point but I think you just can’t regulate the marketplace like that.
It will have unintended consequences. The minute you start capping what an individual can earn based on arbitrary bands, you create more problems than you solve IMO.
What is Luke Jackson worth? I’ll tell you what he’s worth - whatever someone is willing to pay for him (us in this case). Not a penny less. This isn’t the government where everyone gets an annual increment for each year of service.

In my opinion the very top players are already underpaid and such a system as suggested would only make that even more pronounced.

Once again depends on the bands.

Also doesn’t have to be a per year figure as such. Games played would form a big part of what a player ‘earned’.

I think there’s room for such a system. I don’t think the current system is ‘broke’ as such, but the idea of salary dumps, salary squeeze, back ended, front ended etc could all be addressed with some sort of adjustment.

Otherwise the not to far future is going to see increasing issues and there will come a time when someone like Bowes can’t be paid by his club or other clubs don’t take on his salary and you have teams forfeiting points or whatever. That’s 100% foreseeable, it’s kind of already happening.

Back to your original point Cobbler: I'd like to see a system where players have a fixed time period after being drafted where they are "non-free agents".

Let's call this non-free period 5 years (2 years guaranteed with a 3 year option). During this period, the players are employed by the AFL, on a pay scale regulated by their Enterprise Agreement (you can have bonus payments for games played, Brownlow votes, AA nominations, etc). As AFL employees they can be moved from club to club freely. So clubs could loan players or trade without consent, etc.

After the non-free period the players are total unrestricted free agents. The clubs can employ them directly with whatever compensation they want (staying within the salary cap). As club employees the players can now contract with whomever they damn like. There is zero compensation when an uncontracted free agent moves clubs. If a contracted free agent moves, well that is a trade between clubs with the player's consent.

So we have Clarko vehemently denying everything.

Then we have three players with their accusations and a coach corroborating their stories.

Found this on the Adelaide board. Holy ****, reading some of those emails.

Hawthorn racism review: Andrew Newbold denies sending bombshell emails

A Hawthorn player’s partner shared her distress in an email to then-President Andrew Newbold, but her pleas for help were dismissed. READ THE EMAILS AND NEWBOLD’S REPLY.

i can't believe the defence offered by newbold, saying it was others at the club and he didn't actually have access to that email?

Holy feck.

Either we are living through one of the great conspiracies of our time.

Or the Hawks were an absolute shitshow and deserve to have not just the book, but the entire fecking Library of Congress, thrown at them.

And from the Knights Templar and the Illuminati onwards only dimwits have believed in grand conspiracies.

Yeah, it was "sent from my iPhone" 🤦‍♂️

****in hell, I wonder who the player is? I imagine on the main board they have worked out who it is easily enough.
Brutal treatment by the club ☹️

It’s not Dayle Garlett anyway, he was only drafted by the Hawks in November 2013 and then emails were sent in March 2013

Maybe, but if I was a player going into, say, Freo's buildings after I had specifically said I wouldn't I'd probably take the trouble to park out of the way and sidle in via the rec centre entrance rather than under a big honking sign saying FREMANTLE FOOTBALL CLUB after walking past 15 photographers in the players carpark.
