Yep, there are enough clarkson apologists/people with Clarkson messiah complexes to sink a battleship! Apparently in Australian sport, if you are successful, all your past indiscretions magically disappear. It's like assaulting multiple people is not such a big deal. Yeah, nah, he's just a tough guy with a strong leadership style.
That's a thing in all sports, look at Tom Brady and Elliot in the NFL. Reality is the bigger the sporting competitions the more corrupt it will be because that's what money does.

I think the problem is most people don't realise that good people can do bad things. More specifically, people aren't bad or good and their actions can be anywhere on that spectrum of good to bad.
Oh, people can be bad to the core. Take Donald Trump for instance.

I'm not sure why people have this notion that you have to meet the person in question. Are their reprehensible actions not enough for you?
I'll judge those actions if I am confident in the source reporting them, but no way I'd judge a whole person off news reports.

That's the whole point. You don't judge people, you judge actions.

I judged both Clarkson and Trump on their actions. They were plain to see via tweets, audio recordings and live footage.

You can do that (I don't follow Trump at all) and if your confident then judge those actions as you will. That doesn't mean everything about that person is wrong/evil. I mean, they could be pure evil, but no way you can tell that from here (Clarko I doubt).

Good point Joao, I like it.

I do also think Clubs have become too involved in players lives. There is no workplace on Earth that gives as much support as modern sporting institutions because players are their most important asset BUT the support needs to be provided in a way that works.

IMO, their needs to be an independent indigenous welfare body that is in charge of overseeing the programs of all clubs AND provides a confidential report system players can go through. I'm ignorant to what the current set-up is but I doubt it's at that level
AFL (and lower leagues like WAFL, SANFL and VFL) have multiple annual audits of:
  1. Salary cap compliance for player salaries;
  2. "soft" Salary cap compliance for coaching and administration/support staff spending;
  3. Interchange and 6/6/6 rule compliance (via video review);
  4. Compliance of medical and physio staff with concussion rules and (since Hirdgate) prescription and application of medicine to players and staff; and
  5. compliance with the AFLPA mandated number of minimum days off for players during off season, pre season and the bye week.

Yet until the Collingwood and Hawthorn reviews, the AFL and all of its clubs had never once, not once, done an independent, systemic audit of treatment of First Nation staff and players?

Plenty of commitments to NAIDOC plans, reconciliation plans and closing the gap initiatives at some clubs (which is great, they are all really worthy and vital initiatives) - but to my knowledge not one systemic, sustained independent review process occurs league wide at any level.

If we can force hacks like Young and Hackdorn to be reviewed to maintain accreditation as player agents or AFL accredited journos, surely, surely we can also have a fair, regular, independent system of review and continuous improvement for how our game treats our First Nations people?

Increase the annual journo accreditation fee to 4K, and the annual player agent accreditation fee to 500K, that should be more than enough to fund it for years.

I wish I knew the demographics of this website. I would be a lot more understanding if I could presume that the people I'm responding to are young, naive 20-somethings.
I'd hazard a guess that the age demographics range from around ten - to anywhere beyond 60 years of age!
