Anywhere in the CBD or Northbridge is fine. It is a quick 5-10 minute train trip to the ground. Although, you will be fighting with peak hour traffic so if you can get to the Camfield early then that is probably the best bet.

Our recruiting was bad pre-Lyon. Passing on Darling unforgivable at the time and definitely in hindsight. 2011 wasn’t much better and I doubt Lyon had any input. Even if he did I doubt he said “take Tommy Sheridan at our first pick”
Yuck
Getting that scumbag would have lost any fans who know about that turd

Staying at the duxton, still finding my bearings but I believe this is the city side?
Congrats on the wedding! If you want game day atmosphere head to the Camfield (get there early though). I would recommend the Royal though as you get to take the scenic route across the bridge and the weather is nice tomorrow.

It is, yes. Jump on a designated bus from there and it’ll take you straight to the ground.

OR if you’re feeling adventurous, grab a hire escooter, go along through East PERTH and leave the scooter at the swan river bank next to Gloucester Park. Walk across the pedestrian bridge

With the new stadium not having much around it directly the big one is the Camfield, but if you want a nice stroll across the bridge the pubs in East Perth like the Royal are quite nice pregame. East Perth gets a bit quiet on a Friday night so after the game either the Camfield or catch a train to the city and head to Northbridge. Pica bar and Alabama Song on a Friday night are always fun and they're right next to the train station
Ditto The Royal. Great beers and food. Easy walk to the ground too

I think Mineral Resources Park is more likely to host a game of AFL than the WACA ground and I don't think that's going to either.

Almost all of the WAFL grounds can match Norwood for ability to host. If that's the standard they're comfortable with, we can match it with what we have without converting a cricket field and pitch for two games of AFL.

It's clearly not about reserved seating attendance for the AFL.

The Can Bar at Basso loves your comments. They’ll enjoy a roaring trade.

The boring “knobs” can sit in the McDonald Stand.

They literally used the WACA for WAFL footy all last season….

When I was referring to grass I was referring to the former grass banks on either side of the ground that were converted to sand pits when they reconfigured the ground for footy.

The biggest issue with the WACA as someone said is where they demolished the old stands on north side of the ground. I think you could find ways to get spectators around that area pretty easily - it’s really just how it looks.

I would say this would be solved when the new development is finished but given how long construction takes these days (and the multiple plans for this proposal) it probably won’t be done in 2027 when Gather Round is next available anyway.

i havent' seen an AFL game since they reorganized the ground but back when fremantle used to play at the WACA it was brilliantly quick football but the problem was you were so far away from the action!

Never thought I was too far away from the action from the WACA members tbh. Must admit though I’ve never actually watched footy there just an absolute sh**tonne of cricket. The Members Stand remains.

The old stands that are now demolished were much further away from the action and weren’t as great for viewing.

And yes as a WACA member there is a small chance I’d get let in for free or at a discounted rate so that’s another reason I’d support it.

Adventurous would be doing the imitation Ben Cousins swim across the river, not the e-scooter thingo.
That said, as an interstate fan based on my last visit to Perth during last year's season, and the vibes of the places - would avoid the Camfield, and instead visit Blasta Brewing and then buss or scooter (or groom swim!!) over to Optus. If you are looking for a slightly more high end drinking thingo before the game, I think there is a new rooftop bar above the Quest hotel called Folly that just opened last month. Obvs I've not been, so any Perth folks that have been there chime in if you think it is rubbish - but based on what my mates have told me so far, if you were with a few folks not fully into footy who maybe wanted some cocktails and swishy drinks, Folly might be worth checking out.

Also, if you do decide to do the Swanny Swim, don't be like Benny and leave the better half in the car - have them come swim with you!!

If AFL games can be played at Norwood with it's 3900 seat and 10,000 capacity then AFL games can be held this weekend at Joondalup with it's lights and 16,000 capacity, Fremantle Oval etc.

They just play the big games Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday at Optus.

OPTUS Thursday night - Optus WC v Collingwood
JOONDALUP Friday afternoon - Brisbane v GWS
OPTUS Friday night - Carlton v Sydney
FREO OVAL Saturday - North v GC
OPTUS Saturday afternoon - Adelaide v Bulldogs
OPTUS Satuday night - Fremantle v Essendon
OPTUS Sunday - Hawthorn v Port Adelaide
JOONDALUP Sunday - Geelong v St Kilda
OPTUS Sunday evening - Richmond v Melbourne

That's the same structure as Adelaide
In SA they offer the Barossa and we go Joondalup twice?

The gather round could have been in WA. You could have even had a game in Busselton or Margaret River oval. (A pre season game was played there in the 90s with a crowd of about 15 000).

We have government departments like Tourism WA that are given millions of dollars to come up with creative ideas to bring people to WA. Their visionary concepts: Kate Ritchie doing an Insta post over the bungle bungles in a chopper, or, paying some marketing guru millions of dollars to come up with an idea they never use. Why multimillion WA tourism campaign was ditched in SECRET.

If it happened in the private sector you’d be out the door in a heartbeat but you get away with it on a cushie public service wicket. As a department, they are about as effective as attempting to nail jelly to the ceiling.

You're not paying attention closely enough if you don't think those sorts of things happen in the private sector all the time, with often not only those responsible not losing their jobs (often passing the buck maybe), but getting richly rewarded.

SA just suits the Gather Round idea pretty well. So accessible to the Vics and a more easily travelled place compared to other options.

Plus when the AFL was floating it, WA had just had the 2021 finals, so it was probably a bit much going back to the well to come here (Qld the hub). The original idea the AFL had was also to generate some buzz in NSW to grow the game, but the SA govt really went hard at it and had some traction given that recent history.

I get that it Adelaide is more accessible for Vics but if you can play an afl game in China then you can definitely have gather round in WA. Forget 2021, we had 30 years to come up with an idea like this and Government departments (like tourism WA) have the funds (but clearly not the balls) to make it happen.

Will Schofield on 882 reckons that Gather Round won't work in WA as WA footy fans tend to have an "us vs them" mentality against the clubs from other states, in particular the Victorian clubs.

I think he has somewhat of a point - the majority of the WA sporting public are eagles nuffies and they're not exactly gonna turn out in droves to see Brisbane v North Melbourne considering they know about 4 players that play for either team. However, during COVID the attendances at the Optus games was pretty good - IIRC Collingwood v Geelong got about 40k on a Thursday night which is comparable to the Gather Round crowds, and the Dreamtime at Optus game was a massive success.

Personally I think SA makes sense as there are places to go outside of the city like the Barossa that are close enough to make it back to the City for the rest of the games. The equivalent for us would be playing games at Optus and in Margaret River which wouldn't make sense. Unfortunately we're not gonna get thousands of tourists flocking to see the beautiful sight of Rushton Park
