Here's a fun podcast about how things aren't as simple as xx or xy. If you don't like new information that might challenge your current opinions probably best to give it a miss.

Quite interesting actually. As for challenging opinions, I definitely have nothing against it as long as it applies both ways.
My issue isn’t someone’s right to change gender (it is a right, not a privilege), my issue is Dani Laidley being “the first woman playing and coaching at the AFL” for example. You can spin it any way you want but that statement isn’t true. Changing records and rewriting history just because it supports certain agenda and narratives is wrong imo. Major sports are divided by gender for a reason, beyond “old fashioned/religious/conservative” BS. Now we’re facing lots of situations where transgender women compete in women’s sports and have massive advantage especially in individual sports. Team sports may even offset some of those advantages but individual definitely can’t.

You can call me a dinosaur because of this (not you necessarily Mr Clifton, anyone for that matter)it doesn’t matter and I’ll just brush it off. It doesn’t change the fact that we’re having an issue here that is only going to become more common, the way the world goes atm.

I agree with the bolded, there is THEN and NOW which needs to be separated for that point of view, records etc. AQlthough it os also ok to retroactively acknowledge her as she during that period.

The rest, is incorrect. There is no evidence to support an advantage to trans women in female sports, in fact, it is more often the opposite. Quite often the amount of hormone they're on, puts they're testosterone and androgen levels far lower than first-gen women, putting them at a disadvantage. The IOC & Australian sport have a case-by-case policy for trans athletes, so they are allowed to compete, however none can even make past qualifying.

There is actually a case to be made that XX born transmen will have a bigger impact in male sports.

I recommend having a scroll through this page in relation to the actual science behind it.

I won’t argue any of that, heck, I’ll even take your word for it as it seems to me that you’re reasonably well read in that regard. You can have new generation of transgenders who start up from relatively young age, that’s all cool.
What’s not cool is an adult swimmer or weightlifter changing genders that elevates them from mediocre athletes to top ranked athletes. I mean, that’s as common a sense as it gets.

I’ll certainly be watching with interest how the sports landscape changes. And it will

In this regard however, the science refutes the 'common sense.' 2x years on hormone replacement completely removes any "apparent" advantage.

And yeah, I was a little full-on yesterday, was one straw too many.

That’s cool Ivan, there’s science and then there’s science.
Agree to disagree. 🤙

Seems like we have reasonably amicably resolved and moved on...

It's very tricky not to go full on politics on that topic and the discussion was reasonably courteous but further discussion on genders can be taken here. I'll straight up delete anything else from this point.

That's very binary of you

If you want to continue this by all means PM me as i find what you're saying pretty interesting and very different to my own point of view on the subject.

Apologies for those wishing to read about footy...

Ahh ehh how about them Eagles...
Not sure how I feel about this to be honest. I think gender politics permeates every aspect of life and is obviously an issue in the footballing community. It would also be an issue in many other professions and social activities.

Gender politics isn't a football only issue, but it is an issue relevant to football.

My only real issue is the topic is volatile and has the capacity to derail other discussion.

If it is sidelined to the politics thread (which I never frequent, and is a topic which has a minor role in football discussions at best), then it's quite specific relevance to football is marginalized.

Is this the right spot? At a bbq today, I overheard a couple of mates talking about how the eagles could make the eight, if they stay injury free and get Harley Reid in the midfield. I just had to keep walking past, trying to stay straight faced, but I’m pretty sure one of them spotted me swallowing a massive guffaw…

I mean, they probably will improve, but top eight?

Not many if we're being honest. 100% it's a stuff up

Afl desperately trying to make Gather Round a thing, but nobody really cares
Eh, talking to people in Adelaide and surrounding regions when I was travelling through. They cared, they said it was sensational for them and their businesses, and was genuinely a fun atmosphere.

I'm also considering going this year, and I've got to say physically Adelaide with distance to city/oval, hotels, infrastructure etc. Adelaide will forever be a far superior place to do this than Perth.

It was a mods decision to move it to the politics thread mate.

The Eagles best 22 isn't that horrible. Buuuuuut they have zero depth and the loss of Hurn will really hurt them.

It's pretty horrible. It looks ok on paper because blokes like Gaff & Darling still make people think they are AFL grade players on reputation when they have dropped off considerably. They had too many years of relaxing, as soon as the team pushes themselves the injuries kick off.

I can't see any magical turn around coming any time soon. Unless a team like Richmond or Geelong completely implode, I'd expect North & Hawks to improve next year and make the gap bigger.
