Sounds about right.

AFL usually wants a Vic side to win a flag.

I can under stand why the AFL want the Queensland and NSW sides to do well.

theres 5 or 6 million in queensland. So even converting half of them would mean another 2 to 3 million new fans.

There is 8 million in NSW. The AFL would want a slice of that NSW cake too. Even if its just a quarter of that. Another 2 million new fans in NSW is more numbers, More Foxtel Subscribers and More money to the AFL.

Bombers and Blues home ground is docklands. They only play at the G for “blockbuster” games. Hence why Richmond and Pies hate playing at docklands because even their “away” games are at the G
Partially true.... But there is a reason why I specifically ranked those sides in order.

1. Queensland and NSW sides are at the top. There is 5 million in Queensland. AFL would love to gain another 2 million new fans in Queensland when Brisbane does well. When Brisbane won flags in 2001-3, the gabba held 37,500 seats and was sold out. There is 8 million in NSW. AFL would love to gain another 2 or 3 million NSW fans there too.

2. Victorian sides that play home games at the MCG. I put Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond, Melbourne and Hawthorn (yeah they play a couple of home games in tassie each season) in this group. One of these sides winning the flag means that the average home crowds is 70 to 90,000 each home MCG game.

3. Geelong. I put Geelong alone a group. Remember when Freo faced them in a final in 2013? I do. Geelong were given a choice. Home game was a choice between 35,000 seat kardinia park or 50,000 seat docklands. Cats make more money having 35,000 paying $40 for a kardinia park seat than 50,000 people paying $40 for a docklands seat. Why? beacause Kardinia park rent is dirt cheap compared to docklands.

4. Vic sides that play home games at Docklands. This is the group of Saints, Bulldogs and Kangaroos. Yes other Vic clubs like hawks and blues and essendon play home games at docklands, mainly against the non vic clubs. But Saints, Dogs and North Melbourne Kangaroos (North plays a few games in tassie for fiancial reasons) play most of their home games at docklands. None of those 3 are teams with massive fan bases. North has won only 4 flags Dogs only 2 and saints with one. All 3 of them usually get 15 to 20,000 people at home vs Non vic sides. Any of those 3 clubs winning a flag isnt going to bring a lot of new local fans.

5. Its Practically a tie Between the 2 SA clubs and 2 WA clubs. I personally dont care about Port or the Crows. I probably would side with them in a grand final if their opponents are victorian. If its vs Freo, well I want freo to win obviously. If its against the NSW or Queensland sides and even west coast, Like the 2024 AFL grand final, I really couldnt care.

Having A south Aussie side winning an AFL grand final isnt gonna grow the AFL presence in SA. AFL have them covered.

As for the last 2 teams. West coast have won a few flags. They have a big fan base partially because of that reason. Them winning the flag again will increase their fan base to a degree again.

Now its down to the Dockers. I would love for freo to win the flag for the obvious and personal reasons because I follow them. Dockers winning the flag wont increase the WA tv ratings a lot. Like SA , The AFL has got WA converted.

The AFL has data on the Northern states winning a flag though and nothing sticks. As soon as the dip ones the fans drop off again.

What they need to realise is there is no data on Freo winning a flag, watch us convert the whole state and become bigger than WC. The cash will roll in like we’re Neville F’ing Bartos. We just need the AFL to stop actively screwing us over and it might happen.

good point....

I remember the old Days Of home games at Subiaco oval. 2003 was the 1st year dockers made finals.

We usually averaged 30,000 people in a 43,000 seat subiaco oval. so 2 out of 3 seats filled up.

I remember the 2007 season. We averaged 37,000 people that season. That was off the back of that 2006 prelim final and getting that 1st finals win.

The small Vic teams are by far (and it's not even close) the hardest done teams in the AFL.

They get zero media attention, players don’t want to go to North or Saints when they can go to a big team in the same state. They play f-all games at the MCG and their home ground advantage sucks.

Compared to Fremantle/Adelaide etc who have huge crowds, great home ground advantage, one of only two clubs for players to choose from and a heap of sponsorship due to media attention in their home state.

In terms of Vic bias, Geelong get the absolute best of both worlds then the big MCG tenants. We are well below those clubs but I would take Fremantle situation everyday over what North and Saints get.

Yeh I sort of agree, albeit you could argue crowd sizes are are a result of what has happened since each club was formed. The most successful clubs have more fans.

The small clubs get the most financial support also outside of GC and probably Giants though.

Everything positive about Freo’s situation is brought about by the club itself and the fans. Only favour the AFL a has ever done for us is allow us to enter the competition and the WAFC and WA Media aren’t much better.

North, St Kilda, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast and GWS would all fold within 3-4 years if the AFL gave them the same funding we get. Brisbane would really struggle if they had a sustained lean patch too.

Having said that I don’t know how I’d feel if those clubs weren’t in the competition. The draft system is broken at the moment but I think the AFL keeping these clubs alive is overall the right thing to do.

Strong argument they didn't even do that with how we were made to start, basically started us out of spite

Must disagree. If the mendicant Melbourne clubs folded tomorrow it would be an excellent move. The whole competition is distorted and diminished by this pathetic VFL legacy belief that small suburban Melbourne clubs belong in a national competition

Thinking about Richmond post this trade period is interesting.

If all these deals (Rioli, Baker, Bolton, Graham) go through they'll lose:
-Their highest posession getter this year and equal best flanker with Short (Rioli)
-Their #1 goalscorer this year and player who's been top 3 in goals for the last 4 years and #3 in clearances this year (Bolton)
-Their best utility and a guy who's been in their top 10 players the last couple of years, plus #3 goalkicker this year (Baker)
-A solid B22 mid who isn't anything special but fills a role (Graham)

Most of their other main drivers are 28+ and this is a team that won 2 games last year.

I understand getting in before Tasmania but they're going to be Norf level bad for 4-5 years here. I'd take the Eagles list over them every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I mean clearly 3 flags etc etc but it's still going to be a lot of chicken poo at punt road for a while.

This is all true except sponsorship. Those minnow Vic clubs actually make the same amount or more from their main sponsorship deals compared to ours. Presumably due to what those organisations see as better value for money? (frequent exposure to the big clubs?). But yeah all other metrics and intangibles like media and player attractiveness we blow them away.

I think they understand that, but the opportunity to bring in 5-6 very good players and absolutely pump games into them, means they could be good in 3-4 years instead of the 5-6 WC will take (already been shot for 3 years).

Despite my previous post I can see where you're coming from.

Unfortunately I think there's still more interest nationally in say Collingwood vs St Kilda than Collingwood vs Freo, especially if both games are in Melbourne. For some reason Victorian fans seem less likely to watch their own team when they're playing a non-Victorian. Considering we play a WA side twice a season I think it's quite pathetic tbh but whilst that's the case I can't see anything changing.

So no illegal activity and no one from the public was involved but we’re going to lose our shit?
Can only imagine the outrage the indigenous fellas singing Living Next Door to Alan in about 1988 at Maylands Footy Club players review would cause today. To be fair the guys falling off stage laughing uncontrollably would be a health and safety issue.

I don't know how to feel about this.

Doesn't sound like anybody was hurt or offended and no members of the public were involved, it was all in house.

I do and say inappropriate things in the confines of my own home and amongst the company of my close friends all the time.

How much scrutiny do we really need to put these players under. We don't know the full story so I may be right off the mark here, but it feels (so far) like it's just people looking to be outraged.

Kind of snowflake behaviour. Maybe.
