Impressive effort for Brisbane to make the GF from outside the top 4 as a non-Victorian team.

I believe it’s only been done once before, in 2019 by GWS.

Like 2019 though, I think Sydney shit this premiership in. I just don’t think you can win 3 consecutive away games against top sides to win a flag. Hence I always thought non-Vic sides cannot win the flag outside of 4th. Fascinating to see if I’m proven wrong though.

Adelaide in 1998 won a premiership from 5th but they also had the different finals system of 1st vs 8th, 2nd vs 7th...so they lost in the first week to 4th place Melbourne but weren't in the lowest 2 teams eliminated and then went on to win the next 3 vs the teams that finished 1,2,3 at the end of the home and away season. All 4 games were played away from Adelaide.

Brisbane should be better prepared mentally than Sydney. A tight grand final last year, plus this tight prelim should keep them in good stead. Meanwhile the swans haven't played at the MCG since April.

I thought todays prelim, Cats V Lions, was an ordinary game until the ten minute mark of the third quarter.
Geelong kicked 7 in the second, but all from no Lions pressure and mistakes. A couple from outta the rear end.
But the third quarter, Lions began to run play the corridor. Put Geelong under pressure and it was game on. It became a real prelim.

Would’ve been a better game if Geelong didn’t keep kicking it to uncontested Lions in their f50.

Absolutely loved it. One of the best games in what's been a decent finals series.
I think Brisbane are the most talented and well rounded team going around and think they'll win next week.
Sydney doesn't have anything like the forward firepower and general spread of talent Brisbane have.

Lohman is turning into a star before our eyes, Ashcroft is like a low key Nick Daicos, playing well beyond his years.
Dunkley is class, we know Neale is a superstar, the Suitcase is going alright, AhChee and Charlie are a fab combo up front.
Defence is well balanced and settled.

Hopefully its a cracking GF, I'll be getting my usual Elmar's Bratwurst in.
Lions by less than 12 points.

Probably were unlucky to drop to 5th in the first place to be fair. Lot of close losses towards the end there. Probably the second best team all year.
Yes, Port were clearly not top four.

That’s what I reckon. Sydney’s midfield have to play at their absolute best, which I believe they can.

Well it helps your case that Oscar probably doesn't play in the GF.

This is probably better placed in the politics thread... but people losing money on gambling isn't necessarily a bad thing in and of itself.

If, say, it's by people who can afford it, then it's just pretendy stuff circulating around the economy. It's more the who and how that can make a difference. Obviously vulnerable (ie desperate) groups are likely the cutting edge of it.

I'd hazard a guess and say cost of living might also play a role, in that gambling might rise with it, as people look for relief both financially, dopamine/distraction, and "hope"-wise.

If it’s $4 for a tomato or a 15 leg multi with a $12000 payout I know which one I’m taking

Just need the NY Jets to get rolling and ham and cheese toasties are still pretty good

The GF should be played in Sydney. Farcical amateur league we have.
Highest finishing team has earnt the right to host the GF. Just make the tickets more expensive so revenue is the same as a MCG GF - it will always be full at any price.

So based on this no non-Vic team has ever won a flag outside of Top 4 under the current system?

That’s right. Only the Bulldogs have won it outside the top 4, from 7th in 2016.

But their four scheduled ‘away’ finals actually went away(EF)-home(SF)-away(PF)-home(GF, vs the 1st placed Swans). The perks of being a Victorian team.

Because they lost the first final, under current rules they would have been eliminated.
No, they wouldn’t have. They would have played Essendon at home.

The problem with the old final 8 system is that the 4v5 games were effectively dead rubbers, with their being minimal incentive to win one.
