Mega Thread Non-Freo AFL Discussion 2025

Biggest win in suns history 87 points.

Freo got flogged but 4 other clubs had arguably worse performances give who and where they played.

Hope looked to have died after Round one, but those Freo supporters can start tracking Pick 3 in the draft if the ladder stays this way.

It might be a niche opinion but I think Ed Richards is fast becoming one of the competitions premium midfielders, and if that 2017 draft were redone right now he would be firmly in the top 5 conversation.
You’d have Sam Taylor at 1, then take your pick from LDU, Brayshaw, Richards, Fritsch, Daniels and Naughton.
Richards might be one of the best ball users in the comp, his left foot is deadly and he’s having more and more impact on games every time I watch him play. He’s like a Jordan Dawson clone. Very good player development by the dogs.

2 WC players out there yesterday that clearly didnt want to be there.

The moment Kelly came out and said his heart wasnt in it anymore he should have been dropped. There are kids in their 2s that are busting their guts out watching this bloke stroll around picking up big $$$ for no effort. That sends a very bad message though the club.

Reid .... fat, seagull that screams FIGJAM. Clearly wants out of WC. But every time he puts in a half baked effort his value goes down. No one is going to pay $2 million for a 15 possession midfielder.

Listen i'm on board that Harley Reid is probably the most overrated player in the comp. He also has severe attitude issues on field, BUT, if he actually had some midfielders around him to help, he would be a lot better.

I dont see him as the big accumulator type mid, he's the bloke who will have 15-20 touches and dominate a game, ala Dusty.

Like i said, he has a lot of issues to solve and areas to improve on (starting with his attitude), but i still think we can lay off the kid a bit - he's not the guy putting his own head on every back page of the west, and if people want to pay big bucks for him, do you think he's just going to say "no" to that?

I think we all know if he was on the opposite team yesterday and had Rowell, Anderson and Miller taking the heat in front of him he would've had a picnic out there.

It's great the eagles sucked a bit harder than us on the weekend to dull our pain, but Harley Reid is hardly the sole reason and for all we know, he may stay at the eagles and be the cream on the cake in years to come. Lets not be too arrogant here (like our own coach has been lately), we still have a fair bit of egg on our own face!

If I was an Eagles fan I'd be hoping some Vic club pays well over the odds for the guy - get multiple picks, salary cap space etc and go hard for Warner. The guy is lazy, arrogant, overrated and a selfish player. It's funny that he plays for West Coast of course, but in all honesty he isn't worth the investment they would need to pay to keep him.

Agreed

Not to say he still wont be a top-grade player at the right club, with the right players around him. Right now, he's just a 2nd year player with no one around to support him on field.

How do we feel about Hawks going passed us and potentially finishing top 4 with a real crack at the flag? Mitchell a flog but obviously a good coach, with a flag at eagles now shooting up the ladder.

I am incredibly jealous of their coach, but not their list at all.

I haven't watched them a ton, but I like how they play a lot on instinct. Are we overcoached? Does our style of football encourage players to make more decisions leading to an almost paralysis and reduction of playing on instinct? It seems like it at times.

The difficulty is he's a loose head, but together with that he's not putting up the numbers you'd expect from an elite mid.

Walsh, Daicos, Ashcroft, Sheezel were getting plenty of ball early in the first couple of years

Brayshaw and Serong took a bit longer to build numbers but their attitude didn't suck arse...At least they had Fyfe and Mundy to run with not Tim Kelly.

I won't lie, one game in and I genuinely prefer our Reid...

His conditioning is substandard at the moment, add that to the hotheadedness and the opposition will clearly take advantage of it. Watch Andy get under his skin in round 3.

Ego needs to be dialled down (a bit of FIGJAM is fine), and much better work ethic adopted. Personally, think he goes at the end of the season or next and it's a win for West Coast; their fans might not see it that way.

Watching them yesterday was like a combination of the worst parts of the Richmond surge gameplan and the last few diabolical seasons they've dished up. I can't imagine Allen and Waterman loving trying to get cheap out the back looks and not play their natural leading games. Tim Kelly genuinely looks checked out. McGovern can only paper over the cracks for so long before he's injured again. Flynn looks Reidy-esque. Having a genuine plodder like Graham lead your midfield really says it all.

He doesn't have anywhere near the athletic traits so his ceiling is definitely lower.
You're right on the physical side, but smarts (both about footy and and about life) and general attitude will determine who get's closer to their ceiling. Early days yet on both sides, but on what we've so far, our Reid looks the better human being.

Oh Harley is far more likely to not reach his, but this type of behaviour is hardly unprecedented in top end juniors. He could still go either way.
