I'm probably on my own here, but I think he was lucky to only get one. As they do, they've taken into consideration the result. If Rowell was concussed, or injured missing weeks, I think he gets more.
Deserved at least two imo. All this BS about measures to reduce concussion and a guy that leaves the ground and smashes into a player head high is only given a week? I don't know how that gets classified as accidental? He knew he was going to make contact with the player because Rowell was in the same position he was when Rollie left the ground.

I didnt mind it personally. Thought it was a good hit. Rowell wasn't injured as a result.

Basic rule is, “ you leave the ground, you are tempting fate “.

As I said at the time, not courageous. I’d call it courageous if they ran flat stack into each other, with arms outstretched for a mark.

The AFL always talks tough but only acts tough to the minority clubs.

He targeted him. He did the same thing to another GC player later in the game as well.

Sure, why not?
Goes against the whole point of rules to prevent major injuries or disability.
It is difficult to draw the line between going in hard and dirty play at times though.
I haven’t rewatched that part of the game but my recollection was that Rioli did have eyes on the ball , probably hence one week?

Rowell's lack of experience meant he bounced back up and got into it. The ball had moved on, he wasn't near it, when he is older he will stay down. He will stay there until the trainer gets there or his team mates are yelling the ball is coming.

And Rioli, a key player for the Eagles who was taking out a key player for that game, will miss a month.

Rowell will bravely come back out and the media will lose their minds over his courage.

Yep, he looks great and when you know Gold Coast got him for actual free, no bid matching, nothing, it just infuriates you.

They've been helped along the way the entire time and I can't help but feel like everyone who has been paid by GC has treated the job like it's lesser than the real thing.

I WISH we could just add our academy players to our list before the draft.
Just on this; is this somewhat similar sort of weird rulings that allowed saints to draft players before pick 40 without bidding, the same rules we weren't allowed to draft Motlop on? Or is that just my Freo supporters bias making connections that aren't there?

He did, he saw the ball in Rowell's hands and then launched himself into his face.

I saw some of the ridiculous claims by WC supporters that Rioli was the only player who touched the ball. FFS they are a deluded bunch.

Rowell pretty much completes the mark before Rioli even leaves the ground. I think if a player chooses to leave the ground and hits someone head high then the AFL needs to do everything possible to discourage that. Fines or one week suspensions are not enough for something that can easily cause a serious concussion. CTE is a billion dollar law suit waiting to happen in any contact sport.

It's the same vibe but the exact opposite side of the coin.

The AFL knows our metro indigenous talent, including my son, are elite. If Freo has access to players that good it will be unfair to the other clubs because Freo would be too good.

Gold Coast is rubbish and needs to get good fast, so they pour the academy in, giving them access to players with zero cost because the AFL isn't scared of a successful Gold Coast, that makes them money.

The AFL arguably makes less money if Freo wins a grand final than a Melbourne based side.

So what happens to the umpire who didn’t even pay a free kick?

Umpires are a protected species by the league and always have been.

I actually don’t mind the new rule as arguing with umpires isn’t a great look but at the same time there’s no consequence for bad umpiring no avenue to question it for clubs. There doesn’t seem to be performance measures for AFL umpires. Dean Margetts is living proof of that.

We should be questioning the AFL for Sunday’s performance behind the scenes. No question about it.

Fans hate the umpires in the AFL more than every other sport I know as AFL the worst umpired sport in the world by a mile. The AFL’s constant rule changes are a significant contributing factor. Until the AFL make the game easier to umpire and replace under performing umpires umpiring won’t improve and fans will continue to have the same attitude. Forcing players to not argue with decisions is a necessary step but won’t change the general public’s attitude towards them.
