I actually don’t mind the new rule as arguing with umpires isn’t a great look but at the same time there’s no consequence for bad umpiring no avenue to question it for clubs. There doesn’t seem to be performance measures for AFL umpires. Dean Margetts is living proof of that.

margetts holds the record for most games umpired without a grand final, and additionally has umpired very few finals. The AFL know he isn't a good umpire.

So what happens to the umpire who didn’t even pay a free kick?

WCE also ran the ball down the other end and kicked goal when GC should have been kicking from the square.

the umpire is actually in the shot - he was in prime position to see exactly what happened. He wasn't blocked. The blokes eyes must be painted on.

He’ll definitely be invited back to ump WC games

The Suns players had all stopped, thinking that the umpire had called time off whilst Matt Rowell was lying injured on the ground. Meanwhile the opportunistic Eagles took advantage of the Suns being caught unaware, sneakily played on and ran the ball down into a completely open and undefended goal, kicked by none other than the player that caused all this.

Watched the Kayo mini last night. They can be very misleading as in a high scoring game all you get are good passages of play. With that said, both are looking improved this season.

Both have benefitted greatly from the academy system. Sydney should be top five unless major injuries hit. They have Papley still to come in, and have game changers on most lines. The lizard is a freak. Also, I am not sure if there is a more fitting nick name in the league.

Who is the Lizard?
And Sydney are the AFL love child, been artificially inseminated for decades now.
But they have made the most of their good fortune it must be said

The most lizard looking Swan would be Nick Blakey

Not sure if this is the thread for it - Mods do your thing if needed.

There was an attempted stitch up of Fyfe by 6pr recently and the Footy Classified team gave their thoughts. There is talk of the men sacrificing pay for the AFLW players.

Link seems broken - Footy on Nine page on YouTube. Uploaded today 'Lloyd's blunt reply to Hutchy..'

I won't go into it too much. What I will mention is that many years into the AFL competition players were part timers and on little to no pay outside of the stars. If the league is going to be sustainable they need to develop it through that phase which the men didn't get to skip either.

My opinion on it is a little different. Instead of the men getting a hypothetical 10% increase in the next CBA, they only take a 2% increase, and the difference goes to the women to create parity. (not equal pay, as they don't currently bring in the revenue)

I feel we need to allow the women to become professionals if we expect the "product" to improve. This doesn't mean 150k-1.2M salaries like the men, more like 65k-150k. How many potential players are lost to the general work force due the pay and time commitments?

That is in effect a pay cut and would also affect list management strategies. They mention in the video that the top players are on 100-150k and the rest on a range up to 100k. That is significant for a league that isn't making money.

I can understand that. The men did play through those same circumstances and also lost players to the workforce, other sports etc.

Appreciate the thoughtful reply.

I was sickened to see that Rowell crunch. Feared neck/spine damage. Matty Rowell is freakishly determined to stay in the game but I wish he hadn't willed himself upright quite so quickly.

As for that next WC goal, I was sickened in a different way by 1 - the gutless, crowd-influenced ump presumably mesmerised into a no-call, 2 - the ill-gotten goal that followed and 3 - the amoral being who is WC coach.

Here is the distribution of incomes for AFL players.

I think the AFLPA will negotiate either a $150,000 or $175,000 minimum pay level for AFL players without too much salary cap impact and the rest of the money will go where it is already going.

I don't think it's appropriate for the AFLW to slice off a bigger portion of the pie than they are bringing in, but if the deal for AFLW broadcast rights was previously worth $X unit and the next one is four times that value then the AFLW, assuming costs are being surpassed, should be getting a pay increase that matches that increase in revenue.

Or, the AFL stop being a bunch of stingey campaigners and actually put up the money themselves instead of expecting everyone else to foot the bill. They introduced the competition and keep adding more teams. If they can't afford it then they shouldn't have done it. They can't expect the men to take less money to prop up the women.

Fyfe replied “I’m not willing to answer that question” when sam McClure asked him if he’d be willing to sacrifice pay to help fund the womens game.
Curious that it’s been apparently removed from footy classified that part.
He’s dead right Fyfe is, Btw.
AFL players have been paid the same money for about 10 years straight and are relatively underpaid compared to other pro sports, especially the top players.

How about we take 10-15% from the AFL executives to cover it?

Always a 50-50 call, could have gone either way.
Should 100% have been a free but I can see arguments either way for suspension versus none

Left the ground, took his eyes off the ball, turned his body, then proceeded to hit him in the head. That is a suspension whether you think it should be or not.
Apparently not
