Wow- put Melbournes SEN and Kane just said Port contacted umpires department on Sunday because one umpire in their game against Cats paid 15 free kicks to Geelong and not one to Port and said it was extremely noticeable that that umpire only had eyes for one team. Umpire Whetton .

In context, he said Carlton only had 14 frees for yesterday.

This ump should be banished to whatever suburban league for the remainder of the year.

Thats an incredibly lame whinge from Kane and Port then lol.

Free kick counts are the worst indicator of the quality of umpiring. They probably got the rough end of the stick at the cattery but you've just got to deal with it.

Yes and no.
14-0 is certainly rare though. Port is doing what they should do IMO.

Kane has a bigger bias to Port than Eddie does to the Pies. Any comment he makes on Port should be taken with a giant pile of salt
Bias or otherwise but it would shock me in any match if one umpire paid 15 free kicks to 0 in favour of one team.

Take Kane out of it; that’s nigh on impossible to dish out.

Same in our match yesterday. The umpires clearly had two sets of interpretations based on the colour of the jumper. They weren’t missing anything Freo, we barely got anything and then blatantly butchered two decisions, Joes hand in the back (no pushing motion) or the clear 50 to Hipwood. That was all amateur. Hour those two.

I dont doubt that it would be weird and he could be very true. But any time someone purely quotes free kick counts it just lacks so much context. There is no statistical reason that a count couldnt end up one sided like that. A pure count should never be relevant. It should be about specific calls were or werent made.

3. Lastly, 4 umpires hasn't improved the overall quality in my opinion. There is potential for an umpire stationed in the forward half of one team to influence the game with slightly different interpretations. People with an astute eye or understanding may be able to fill me in whether there are umpire rotations during the game.
Absolutely agree with this. Just as many free kicks if not more are still being missed.

I think the umpires, even tho there are more of them, they're all seeing more or less the same view of the action, because they're all stationed more or less in the centre corridor. Surely they would be better off having starting points like a diamond, ie one inside each forward 50 and the other two around the sides of the centre square. This would provide the umpires with multiple angles of events.

Be interested in the thoughts of our umpires or former umpires on this board?

Maybe they just need to become full time.
Absolutely they do. Should be a no brainer. Crowds at an all time high in a year of high inflation impinging on costs of living, augers very well for the future when these pressures recede. The game is awash with cash and more should be done to funnel this towards the officials, including at lower levels.

The fixture should also prioritise fairness over blockbusters but that is another story.

The game day threads on the main board usually offer a good indication if the umps are calling everything one way. Usually start seeing neutral fans commenting that one team is getting every ticytac free, while the other team is getting nothing.

You could pay each umpire a squillion dollars, but as long as they’re following daft instructions from above, nowt will change.
Yeah that's the other thing... So much subjectivity and "interpretation" involved in the current rules 🤦

I wonder if one team could be instructed to keep putting the ball on top of said umpires head.

A few incidental collisions because he’s in the way of a contest might make him start calling the game fair.
Someone tried that in the US vs Sweden game last night.

No change

SEN today posing the question - Are Carlton the new Premiership favourites?
I will say; to their credit, they’ve done well given the turmoil the club was in six weeks ago. Bet that director who flew off the handle is regretting his tantrum now given he was outed shortly after his conduct in the dressing room after one of their losses.

Even Paddy Dow looked a player from the highlights I saw last night and the first half o the game before I switched on the Lions game.

Funnily enough; Blues have looked better without McKay in the team.

I doubt they would, bit like us moving on say Hipwood ( I’m dead against that) but they could cash in big time if they did.

Out of Contract next year, never mind. thought it was 23.

Glancing over coaches votes. Mitch Hinge Polled 9. He's been very good the last month or so. Good to see.
Hinge is a very nice player and a good user or the ball with a lovely kick. I reckon he’d be getting a game in our current team if he was still at the club as one of the 7 defenders

Yep.

Pay. More. Free. Kicks.
