Norm Smith Medal - they got it wrong

having also seen the game again on tv i thought the only player even close to hodge was the shotgun, and only really because he was a contributor across all 4 quarters.

hodge's presence, spoils and smothers were all brilliant, and the perceived pressure geelong had when in his vicinity was a major factor.

Ablett's game was summed up by one passage of play, I think it was midway through the third quarter. He extracted the ball from a stoppage on the wing, sold some candy to Dew (who gobbled it down hungrily) with a lovely shimmy-whoosh, ran 15 yards, shaped up for a dinky 20-metre kick inside 50, had it tipped by (I think) Bateman on the 50, it got to Stokes, who was immediately besieged by three Hawk defenders, ballup.

Just not enough effectiveness for his mountain of possessions.
