North’s greatest players night. Boomer picked ahead of Blight...embarrassing and disgraceful

Blight is one of the greatest players of all time. I can't think of a better player at North.

Og and he's the equal best small forward the game has ever seen (equal with Bartlett) despite playing midfield for much of his career.

I would like to know how many players the club has in total. Because for some of those liared below to get into the top 150 is laughable. I just don't get it!

The precious era also has some outliers.

I do think they made the right call with the top 3. Dench and Greig were magnificent. I would have Harvey closer to 10. Stevens at 9...really? He was a great warrior but top 10??

Gee no wonder they have been so average for so long, a very vanilla group of players

Sam Kekovich for a brief period was just amazing. Might have been the best player in the country late 60s. Played a stinker in 74 GF, and missed the photo shoot in 75 victorous team!

Yes, it's easy to forget just how good Kekovich was for that brief period in football history. For younger people who really only know him as that guy on the Aussie Lamb commercials, Kekovich was an incredible player, so dynamic and able to turn a match around off his own boot.

There was that great joke many years ago of when Kekovich and Cable were the only true stars of the North team and went to the game in a car whilst the rest of the team took a bus. The bus broke down so it was only the two of them to take on the opposition. They played so well they were miles in front at 3/4 time, so Kekka decided to go to the TAB and left Cable to polish off the game on his own.

After the game, Kekka found out North had lost so he asked Cable what happened. Cable said, "After you left, the rest of the team turned up".

I think until you go through the process with your own club, people overestimate just how many stars their club has produced. It's a very basic way of looking at it, but I think people would be surprised at how few 150 game players most clubs have. There's a reason players get their name on the locker for 100 games at a club: because it's not easy.

I reckon that after picking three top teams of champions for Geelong, it would be players like Brad Sholl, Max Rooke, Liam Pickering and Oysters Kilpatrick coming in around the top 100 and then someone like Mark Blake or Jordan Murdoch getting serious consideration to sneak in the 150.

Hang on...Anthony Stevens was #9?

That’s ridiculous, good player but jeez.

Wouldn’t make Top 10 at my club and we’ve been around for just over 30 years.
Our Top 10 after 33 years wouldn't be too bad by comparison with their 95 years. Kind of embarrassing when you consider the head-start they had.

To be fair, there's only been 3 years in that 20 year period that North's been good (2007, 2014-2015). Waite had a good run at North, but seems a bit silly to have him in there given how old he was. Seems to be a bit of recent-history romanticism.

Also, Stevens above Cable is questionable. Some would have Cable as #1, I'm sure.

Boomer is rightfully in there. In a weird way, him being the VFL/AFL games record holder detracts from his status as a player, because people write him off as just "playing for a long time". He was a top player in the competition in the late 2000s (whether people want to admit it or not) and remained the #1 headache of opposition coaches against North for 15-20 years. What other player can say that?

Only main knock on Blight is his sub-par finals performances. The year he won the Brownlow, he was extraordinary but the finals came along and he was virtually no where to be seen.

I understand it's a different game come September as the star player is heavily focused upon by the opposition but the all time greats rarely deviated in their output between the regular season and that of the finals.

Problem is he only played 115 for North. 300 games for WAFL. So if you’re looking at that, not enough games.

Coleman played less than 100 games and is thought of as a legend.

100 games from Cable >>>> 400 games from Boomer.

Blight should be up with Carey & Grieg.

Pretty tough gig ordering players like that.

So from Geelong for example

Patrick Dangerfield - 89 games, Brownlow Medal, 2 x b&fs, 3 x AAs. He will likely add to the individual awards before he is done but likely won't win a flag.

v

Cameron Ling - 246 games, premiership captain, 3 x premiership player, 1 x b&f, 1 x AA

If you did a list who is ahead? It is pretty clear who was the better footballer of the two.

People are potting Stevens but he would have a similar resume to Ling. How highly do you rate pure playing ability v. everything else.

The three primary attributes for selection are on field achievements, longevity and sustained excellence.
Indeed

What a ridiculous thread.

Boomer has won the most North BnFs ever with 5, (Blight only jagged one)

Boomer played 432 games for North, and was captain, Blight played 178 games.

Pretty fecking clear that Boomer’s contribution to North shade most players being thrown up.
