Jack will never be an endurance runner. His job is to win the footy in close and feed it out to guys who can run all day.

But he has a much better kick than Cunners or Swallow - whilst im not suggesting he turn into an outside player, i think he is more valuable getting into goal scoring positions or kicking it inside 50. And building up his fitness will allow him to do this more than he does at present.

IMO his value to the side is taking on the bigger bodies in the middle.

I do agree about his kicking.

Jack will be an endurance runner...He just won't be ridiculously quick. His and Cunnington's endurance has improved out of sight in the past 2 years.

A 2km run is not a good indication of true endurance which is required to play midfield at AFL level. Building a tank is all about hard work. This is only Ziebell's and Cunner's 2nd full pre-season. We will see the fruits of their labour after another 1-2 in my opinion.

Pure inside mids: Greenwood, Swallow, Cunnington

I'd be happy to let Ziebell play an outside role where he can utilise his kicking and finishing skills. Let him float between half forward and half back. I'd put him on a wing and just tell him to get involved as much as possible.

I am talking more Sam Gibson style.

He is an animal when it comes to running.

There are no inside and outside mids anymore. Your 2 wingers, center, ruck-rover and rover have all got to be able win their own ball, spread and receive and/or carry the ball. The h/backs and h/forwards are really your outside players these days.

I've seen Boomer out run just about everyone in the AFL in final quaters with repeat sprint efforts. Somehow I don't think his endurance isnt too bad.
I am not sure 2km time trial would be a great indicator about your ability to run out a final quarter.

What if you have to run for 2km continuously in the final quarter? At the same pace? And in a straight line?

Raise a fantastic point... people confuse aerobic endurance with anaerobic endurance. The likes of Harvey, Harper etc have the ability to make constant sprint after sprint... a 2km time trial is a good base but I would prefer someone who has a fantastic lactate threshold and can complete several 20-30m sprints at a constant high speed. I think that's what Cunnington/Ziebell need to work on with their size in particular, as this will give them a chance to explode from contests and become the ball winners we need.
