Watching the replay again, and the more I watch it the more I hate Kelli Underwood. There were a number of comments made during the course of the night that i found frustrating, but it was her continuous comments about Brisbane being a brilliant third quarter team to be the most galling, especially when you take our third quarter performances into account. Over the course of the season, we won 11 and lost 3, outscoring our opposition 31.18.204 - 5.15.45. We conceded only 5 goals in the third quarter for the entire season, (two of those were against Geelong) that is an unbelievably dominant and consistent performance of the course of the season and yet it was totally ignored by Underwood and her cohorts.

Rant over.
Recency bias from KW, Brisbane were not good in 3rd quarters until the final game of H&A and the two finals against Hawthorn and Adelaide.

Compared to our 3rd quarters you mentioned above, Brisbane went 22.30.162 - 14.13.97, with 13 of those 3rd quarter goals coming in the 3 weeks leading up to the grandfinal.

Not to mention round 1, where we outscored them on their home deck 6.1.37-0.0.0!

Seems crazy that Brisbane make both Grand Finals and win one, but don't get the trophy and money. Bizarre stuff.
Nothing so bizarre as everyone inventing conspiracy where there isn't one! The McClelland Trophy winning condition has a clear requirement that Hawthorn met.

Jammin getting ignored by the umpires four years in a row - that is bizarre.
An award being awarded as defined is generally considered normal behaviour.

Please. If you need to invent conspiracies, the stoners in the 70s provided you with a template that we'd appreciate if you could follow. All hail J. R. "Bob" Dobbs not working for the AFL.

Calm down bro. Maybe I should have worded it a bit differently.

Seems crazy that the way the McClelland is set up means Brisbane make both Grand Finals and win one, but don't get the trophy and money. Bizarre stuff.

That better?

weird that someone would be emotional after winning a granny
She did get that knock about five minutes from the end that left her on the ground for a number of minutes. I think she ended up with a knee to the stomach attempting a smother, she may have been feeling the effects of that.

I think the McLelland not including the finals is a very strange way of doing it. Every club has the equal opportunity to win finals, it's not like the brownlow where not every player gets extra games to score votes in at the end of the year. If you're a contender for the McLelland you probably made finals anyway, and those wins probably matter more in terms of determining who actually had the better season since they're contests between purported contenders, compared to the extremely uneven fixture of the H&A in both comps (which Hawthorn could not have won this without).

The AFL already had a system where the best finals performer was rewarded - with a flag. The whole point was to recognise excellence over a season. And given the rules for the combined men and women’s prize, Hawthorn made it. The problem is double points for AFLW home and away points when the fixture is so completely dodgy. That’s where Brisbane was ripped off, not that I care, hate them both.

Has anyone pointed out yet that the McLelland trophy has always been based solely on home and away results? It was introduced in 1951, and while the weightings between seniors, reserves and under-19s changed from time to time, it was always based on the points earned in each grade. And obviously, there are no points awarded for finals matches.

Yeah the concern for Brisbane and Craig Shoulderchip is really heartwarming: "If they had won two flags this year..."

Well, they didn't. WE did.

God bless the AFL, bringing the world a new definition of gender equity

Men - divided by 4

Women - divided by 8

Nothing to see here
Lol yeah also taking into account list sizes there's a bit more to the men if my calculations are correct.

Women - 8 teams x 30 listed players = 240. $4,583 per player (1.1 million into 240).
Men - 4 teams x 44 (max) listed players = 176. $6,250 per player (1.1 million to 176).

After reading Sonja's letter, and her mention of Emma Kearney tearing her calf a couple of weeks ago, during her rehab for a hamstring tendon injury, i thought, how would that impact a similarly aged AFL player. Yes, i know the lure of a Grand Final, being Captain and all that, but what a magnificent effort from all involved, Strength/conditioning, medical, Crock and the selection committee for backing her, and of course, Emma herself, for not only making it, but playing an absolute ripper game with a huge impact on the outcome, such a great story.

It must of been a very minor calf strain - no one plays like Emma did with a bad calf

On the face of it, Brisbane deserved the honour. However, everybody always talks about “all we want is consistency”. In this instance, it is very consistent with every other reward in the AFL. They all just factor in the H&A season (Brownlow/AA/Mark and goal of the year - the list goes on).

With all these things, luck plays a massive part. There’s no doubt, things went our way in this GF - as opposed to last year. In normal circumstances, Jenna plays out the 2023 GF and Emma doesn’t get up for 2024. However, the reverse happened.

I honestly don't think luck happened at all on Saturday. We were just way too good. Craig himself admitted that.

Agreed. I’m just talking about the injury side of things. Last year, Jenna collapses in a heap in the first few minutes. This year, Emma survives a full four quarters after a severely curtailed preparation. There’s no doubt we all had our fingers and toes crossed that she’d make it through. Plenty of people on here were advocating not selecting her. This year, Brisbane shipped all the injuries. Last year, Dakota limped into the GF and proved to be the difference. Luck, karma - who knows? It depends on how you wake up, I guess. The body just pulls up good or bad on any given day. We’ve all experienced that.

Fair. I still reckon had Jenna not been injured last season we'd have won too.

In normal circumstances, Dakota Davidson's knee injury keeps her out of the 2023 grand final, whereas in 2024, she is completely fit but had about as much impact as vapour.

Anyone else attending the b&f? I’m very excited, should be awesome.
Will be thinking of you all - should be a cracking night.
