AFLW North Melbourne Football Club AFLW - Season 2024

It's hard to believe that stand is not banned for human access and fenced off. The whole stadium is pretty frightening from a safety perspective. Even the Legends Stand has an atrocious layout for getting in and out. Public transport access and parking has always been rubbish. It's a good thing other traditional suburban grounds are being built up for W games so that there isn't a push to make it the hub for all Victorian W finals in the future.
Incredible move by Carlton to accept a big grant from the government to redevelop their stadium and then proceed to build up a big football training facility leaving no seating behind one of the goals, and leaving a stand that's more rust than metal still standing.

Beats Punt Road though

Looking at the inevitable list changes, besides players being poached/traded the minimum 3 list changes would assumedly come from this group.

Hardiman - likely. Unfortunately squeezed out of the defence
Matser - 1 season but no game despite previous VFLW experience
Perri King - likely. 2 seasons 0 games

McCarthy - possible. 1 season but 20yo and didn't break through for a game
Maurer - has Wall stolen her act? Was encouraging breaking into the seniors but at 20yo with 1 game in 2 years might be on the edge

Be curious if contract terms for players are listed anywhere. There are several players you'd want to tie up for maximum possible term.

Can we poach Gilroy back from the Hawks?
She (and the others who moved across) have really talked up how much they loved playing under Bec Goddard, and Gilly’s got an interview at the B&F where she says she’s had so much more freedom to play on instinct and basically her performance reflected how much more she was enjoying herself out there. No way she’d move back.

We never used her properly. She was wasted at half back.

Apparently.

Looks like we’ve learned to be more flexible this season, not just with Wall but seeing Craven and Gatt around the ball from time to time, Kearney and Garner moving to different lines through games, all seemed more creative.

I was interested in Gilly’s comment about being encouraged to back her instinct, after Vikki Wall saying their game is an instinctive one and she finds the structure the hardest thing to learn. You’d hope we play to the strengths of our players, especially the very good ones. Having said all that, Hawks aren’t playing in the same league as we are so the standards and expectations aren’t going to be the same - it’s easier to make it fun when the stakes are non-existent.

Think this might be near the pin.

Haven't hidden being a Gilroy fan (and when you leave the family, you're dead to me).

But she is possibly allowed to play with reckless abandon in a side with low expectations and output.

As the expectations go up, so will the structures. We'll see where it's all at if/when that happens.

So, the match review officer thought the tackle was bad enough to warrant a fine, but the umpires on the day thought differently. IIRC correctly it was early in the fourth and about 30 metres out from goal. It would have been a difficult shot for Alice, but if she kicked the goal who knows what may have happened.

Match Review: Dees defender charged with rough conduct

It's a shame that we never got to see Aileen playing in the role that Crock had earmarked for her this season.

Yeah, 100%. What's more fun, playing instinctively or playing finals? Might be that Bec Goddard gives her players more freedom, remains to be seen if she can give them a positive winning record

Would she of stayed if we offered her an opportunity to play further upfield

no idea, but who does she push out of the midfield? Riddell? Bruton? Garner? No chance. It's not as though she'd have any more freedom playing on a wing than she did playing in the backline.

Yeah no chance as a starter in the mids but play as a wing /HF and changing in the middle

I don't see how that would afford her any more freedom than she had playing as a defensive rebounder. Playing on a wing is an extremely defensive and accountable role in the modern game

was it Bec Goddard that made that comment about us being "gifted" so much to build our list all those moons ago?

100% agree that the freedoms she’s afforded at Hawthorn are largely affected by where they are in their development.

But it’s still a shame that we had it get to the point it did - in which she saw a future for herself there instead of here.

I would have loved to see her get an opportunity on the wing or the half forward line during her time at North.

I think they'll choose the one where they get paid.
I’m not convinced they will because the salary isn’t substantial enough to compensate being away from family and friends. And of course long term employment.
