In the 1970s and early 1980s, wide receivers and defensive backs began using Stickum, which was a thick, dark yellow, glue-like material that helped pull the football into their hands, like a magnet. Perhaps most famously, Raiders defensive back Lester Hayes was known to use so much of the substance on his body that Stickum dripped off him. Hayes intercepted 13 passes in 1980 and won the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award. “I could catch a football behind my back on one knee,” he later said. “It was tremendous stuff.” Adhesives like Stickum were banned the next year, in 1981. As a result, manufacturers began producing gloves that improved players’ grips on the ball. Technology has since improved to the point that gloves themselves – “sticky gloves” – have enabled receivers and other players to drop fewer passes and make more spectacular-looking, one-handed catches.
Time to take eddies suggestion and move away from the smooth leather and move to a ball with dimples.

Why does there need to be an intermediary phase. The long-held view that smaller footballs directly reduced the number of broken fingers in women's footy seems logical and credible.

I can't speak to Deakin Uni's protocol about sharing AFLW research with other universities, or whether that was strictly the AFL's choice to be uncooperative. What we do know is that various sports involving the catching of a ball with bare hands--like cricket, basketball and one other excellent example that escapes me right now--use a smaller variety in the women's game.

Predicted best 21 for season 2023 from the AFLW website.

Your club's best 21: Who's in, who's out, who's new

north-melbourne.jpg

B: S.Wright, J.Ferguson
HB: N.Bresnehan, E.Kearney, E.O'Shea
C: T.Gatt, J.Bruton, L.Pullar
HF: A.O'Loughlin, K.Shierlaw, I.Eddey
F: T.Randall, E.King
Foll: K.Rennie, J.Garner, A.Riddell
I/C: E.Gavalas, M.King, T.Craven, A.Smith, E.Shannon

Depth: A.Considine, H.Bowey, L.Burke, C.Granville, C.Mailer, N.Martin, S.McCarthy, E.McGrath, R.Tripodi

North Melbourne will unleash its three-pronged attack this year with Tahlia Randall and Emma King to be joined by Kate Shierlaw, while Kim Rennie will retain control of the ruck. Bella Eddey, Alice O'Loughlin and Tess Craven will lead the small forwards, while Taylah Gatt, Lulu Pullar and Amy Smith will make the wings theirs. The powerhouse midfield of Jasmine Garner, Ash Riddell and Jenna Bruton will once again be supported by Ellie Gavalas and Mia King and Eliza Shannon looks likely to break into the best team coming off the half back line.

I was impressed with Tripodi last weekend against the Dogs and would have her on the bench ahead of Craven, otherwise I think it's pretty close.

As much as I admire Chucky Granville and Rooby Tripodi, I strongly believe that Tess Craven is still in our best team.

Also from what I've seen from the opening two practice games and contrary to that AFLW website article, Mia King is nobody's support act. She is being given increasing responsibility in the midfield.

Tripodi best team for mine likewise granville

Instead of smith and craven/shannon

However Granville missed last week

Tripodi played and was one of our better players imo
Dude, you need to give up, Smith is playing, she is one of our best defensive players, our leading tackler and is capable of playing into the middle and while her kicking is still a bit of liability, she showed a lot improvement last season. And Crocks loves her.

Everyone in the league fumbles, I think it has more to do with the size of the ball than a players skill level, and she had only one more turnover than Eddey despite averaging more disposals per game. You are so rusted on to your initial opinion of a player you are incapable of noticing when they show improvement.

I actually feel a little sorry for you because won't be able to enjoy a North premiership if Smith and Wright are accepting their premiership medals, but I'm sure everybody else will enjoy it a little more knowing how disappointed you are. :p

Lol are you trolling based on an acl injury

Campbell was better than smith and still would be if she didn’t injure the acl

Campbell was ****ing shit even before the ACL.

Campbell was ******* s**t even before the ACL.
I thought Campbell was okay in her first season for us, but terrible in the second. Here is a comparison between Campbell and Smith, most of the stats are pretty close, but overall Smith is cleaner with the ball and would be my choice between the two.

I thought Campbell was okay in her first season for us, but she was perhaps the worst player to ever wear the Blue & White in her second, (20 turnovers from only 25 disposals) and if anyone thinks she is a better option then Smith they should never be allowed to comment on football ever again.

One plays forward the other plays mid

Anyone comparing their stats is an idiot that shouldn’t ever comment on afl

Not keen on dunking on a player who worked hard for North to make a point about how dull it is to constantly see another player being dunked on by another poster. Grace is at the Pies and good luck to her, and Smith will continue to be a regular in our side.

Tess really improved last year, and Hannah Bowey also played a role when she came into the team. I was impressed with Tripodi last weekend too, and it’s hard to pick a team - good to see this many players who‘d deserve a senior spot ready to start the season.

Yeah I seem to recall Grace Campbell actually trying in her last game for the club, laying 8 tackles. Which is 8 more than what Ashmore and Bannister managed in that same losing final vs Fremantle. And Grace didn't put her hand out for a bigger contract afterwards.
