Another possible "punishment" that could be worked out would be... supporter , Motlop and AFL face press together to make a few statements:

1) supporter apologises for his actions.
2) Motlop accepts and forgives... shakes hands and all good.
3) AFL sends a public reminder to supporters about supporter interaction with players... what is acceptable, what isn't and what future punishments will be.

Somehow though I think the AFL need to communicate and remind the public where that "line" is between supporter/player interaction.

What is worse is the security guard did nothing when it happened, was more worried about getting the football back to the play.

Correct. Just saw the goal again and confirmed my suspicions that North supporters pushing the 'he deliberately drilled it at the cheer squad' barrow are talking absolute garbage. Anyone in the crowd who got hit by that footy can blame nobody but themselves. And of course, Motlop has every right to kick a goal however he feels like, it's incumbent on the supporters who choose to sit behind the goals to be switched on and prepared to take evasive action.

That was pretty ordinary, I remember at the time being surprised that nothing more was made of it.

He is clearly a first class w***er, but it's not really a problem this year, he can't get a kick...

5 years carries a bit more weight behind as it is a fair slice of a person's life/time... makes them think twice before doing something silly to a player/official etc. 5 years also provides a significant time for someone to mature and reflect back on their actions... ie a 15yo doing it wont "wisen up" much by the time they're 17yo... but potentially will by 20yo. Similar for a 20yo to 25yo.

As for getting in... sure he might get in but he runs the risk of making it worse if he is caught. A bit like re-occuring criminals. They have several levels/methods of enforcing the ban:

- name blacklisted when buying season or game day tickets.
- photo added to the "do not admit" lists.
- security people and CCTV monitoring the ground for blacklisted people.

Can easily get someone else to buy them for individual game tickets for you online. Also, they don't ask you for ID when buying tickets at the outlets at the newsagents, do they?

I'm rarely, if ever, given a second look by security when I go into any sporting event. The only time they might is if the barcode on my ticket/card doesn't work after a couple of goes.

Would be surprised if stadiums went to these lengths; from what I've heard, even texting that antisocial behaviour number doesn't produce much of a result a lot of the time. I find it hard to believe there's guys with headsets in an office somewhere looking at a wall of TVs and scanning for people who have been banned, like it's a casino or something.

Co-ordinated police surveillance usually, over a period of anything up to several months. Not sure this bloke would be top of the list for police surveillance to ensure he doesn't go to an AFL game.

I actually feel for the poor sod.

Had too much time with a player in front of him to entertain braindead thoughts and obviously did the wrong thing. Immediately looked absolutely shattered at what he'd done and walked out of there right after realising the seriousness.

Inexcusable but gee that 2 seconds would have ruined his week.

It's nice to find one North fan willing to remove the victim mentality and admit there was no "drilling of the ball at the cheer squad". Seems the majority of them truly believe it happened even though the video clearly shows otherwise. And they wonder why they are given so much stick.

It's a good point you make. I think the Buddy racism incident in Tassie a few weeks back involved a similar lack of interest from security guards.

I can't condone what the supporter did but I was there sitting in the next bay.

He did aim at the Cheer Squad with his kick but it was gentle kick and very subtle, nothing to go punching/pushing him for.

(Remember this is the guy who shows off on youtube, kicking goals from the stands, he knows how to aim a footy if he wants to, but there was nothing in it.

I am a bit frustrated about people saying Motlop handled it well though. I don't know if Foxtel kept showing he vision but in the follow up, Motlop was gesturing for him to come over the fence and start something.

I am sorry but he is a highly paid professional representing his club and the AFL. Just imagine for a second that the guy or some other drunken fan did jump the fence, who is at blame then?

That is not on either.

Just as supporters should never touch a player, a player should never incite violence by gesturing for a fan to jump the fence.
