North Melbourne's Aaron Edwards caught speeding - 38km's over the limit

My comments are in relation to blood testing, please don't confuse this with secondary breath testing like most of the morons in Bay 13.

This is a direct quote from a police officer in relation to blood testing:

I have taken 15 people for blood tests and every single one of them recorded higher blood alcohol readings than initially recorded. In one case a persons blood reading read as .03 higher than the initial tests showed.

Mario stop there buddy. You're the one getting confused about this. There was no blood test involved at all, he was not offered a blood test, the police dont offer blood tests actually, punters request them after a breath test if they so desire.

In this case I read it that he was given a preliminary breath test which indicted alcohol in his system. He was then requested to attend for a breath test which he declined giving him an automatic loss of licence for 24 months which is the equivolent of having a reading of 0.24%. That's how it works.

Correct, that's how I read the situation also.

You're right, if he wasn't an AFL footballer it wouldn't rate a mention, but he is an AFL footballer & therefore it will rate a mention & AFL players, clubs & supporters know exactly what to expect when a player transgresses. The AFL is a massive fishbowl & the players provide a lot of copy for newspapers, radio stations & TV networks. Stay out of trouble & the media have to find something else to fill their columns, talkback, sports reports.
So you tell me, which is more newsworthy ........... an AFL player does his brief much like many young blokes do, or a whole town decimated by job losses?

Now I know which story should go deeper and longer than the other. The ramifications of wholesale job losses on whole communities is newsworthy and should be written about and discussed more fervantly than edwards blooper.

But the moronic masses want to read the juice on a fringe player!!!! Give me a break!!!

Give me some real news, that has an impact on our lives and community.

As a North supporter I would have no problems if they ripped the contract up and said don't come back.

We just signed the largest sponsorship deal in the clubs history with a car manufacturer, they wouldn't be happy and I don't blame them.

We don't need crap like this at North and as a supporter who had to go through losing Carey our greatest ever player and my hero through an indiscretion saying bye to Edwards wouldn’t be a great concern.

Basically incidents like this distract our people from our goal of surviving as a club. Anyone who gets in the way of that can pack his bags for all I care.

Steven Gerrard has been charged with a serious offence (assault and affray).

His club has done nothing, except fully support their player (who co-incidentally is their captain and most important player).

What is your opinion of how Liverpool handled the situation?

Gerrard is one of the best players in england and up there with best player at Liverpool and has scored in their last few games and been their stand out also their captain.

The full story never came out so I wouldnt judge Gerrard straight away. I was out where Aaron Edwards was on sunday night and he didnt look in good shape. Mayb you could also ask him how Thailand was over new years when the club told him not to go.

Was Edwards involved in a car accident? Was he rushed to hospital? If so he would have been required to give a blood sample due to not being able to offer a breath test. Otherwise he would have been asked to give a secondary test like every other Joe Blow.

The fact he refused it shows he is very stupid or was absolutely smashed.

I will quote your post again:

So are players role models to kids or not? Whether they should be, or have an obligation to be, is irrelevant. Either they are or they aren't. Which one is it?

How many times do you need this explained?

Are footballer role models? Yes. Unfortunatley not all kids have good parents to look up to and will instead look up to their favorite sportsperson to be a rolemodel.

Should footballers be role models? No, footballers are under no moral obligation to be a role model to anyone except their own kids.

Liverpool have done nothing because as of yet Gerrard is not guilty of anything. Have you ever heard of inicent until proven guilty? It is a serious offence and Gerrard should be afforded every opportunity to defend himself before being condemned.

Edwards on the other hand was proven to be speading 38km over the speed limit whilst having alcohol in his system hence North acting accordingly. Comparing these 2 incidents is quite funny really. Different sports, totally different scenerios.

My employer also told people at my work that they were not allowed to go to Thailand so what is your point?

Re: Aaron Edwards caught speeding

Good to see North getting tough on Edwards - they should be congratulated for taking that tough stance.

Either footy players are role models or they aren't. Their "moral obligation" or lack thereof to be role models is irrelevant.

If they are role models, they should act accordingly. If they aren't they can do whatever they want. Which is it?

Have I ever heard of "inicent" until proven guilty? Certainly. Are these 2 situations different? No way.

Let me quote the Edwards article for you:

"Edwards, 23, was pulled over by police on Monday morning on his way to training for allegedly travelling at 38kmh over the speed limit. A preliminary breath test indicated he had alcohol in his system.

Edwards is expected to be charged with speeding and could lose his driver's licence."

He was dealt with by North before he was charged with or found guilty of anything. And you applauded North's swift action in dealing with him.

Gerrard is charged with a far more serious crime, and you are preaching patience and that Liverpool should let justice run it's course.

It sure seems to me that you are applying a clear double standard in these two situations.

The only difference I can see in the situations is that one of the guys involved is an iconic figure at a club you support, and one isn't. And your opinion has been swayed accordingly.
