North vs Collingwood - Season defining match?

Just can't see how North can get up.

Hope I'm wrong, but Pies by 30 looks about right.

Don't know if you main board people know, but in a selection master stroke, Laidley has included Shannon Watt.

This gives us the potential for one of the most mouth-watering match ups in memory. Shannon Watt on Leroy Brown. I can't wait :thumbsu:

JohnD, tell me why you believe our players are more suited to our current gameplan than one that goes down the corridor.

Thanks.

P.S. Answer cannot include 'coz Mick said so'.

Your 'run and carry from defence' types have poor disposal. Corridore turn-overs are brutal anyway, but for a side with below average distributors it's curtains.

Your midfield lacks depth and your outside mids lack polish.

You key position forward targets are not effective avenues to goal.

Your only match-winners play flank or pocket; or sometimes due to lack of depth in the middle they get to play cameo roles in there negating their influence in more suitable positions (Davis, Didak, Thomas). The choice is either play them to limited effect in the middle and go without their influence in flank or pocket roles or play them to their strengths and go to goal via them or Medhurst on the flanks and or in pockets.

Due to poor ruck stocks, there's probably an advantage for Collingwood if stoppages are created boundary-side where there's only one side of the contest to defend. I'd need to watch a few things specifically with this in mind before I committed to this hunch though.

Hope that helps.

Seriously how much of Collingwood do you watch?

Midfield lacks depth and polish? What our midfield lacks is experience and toughness. Thing is, its a bit hard to have it when your main players are so young and lack genuine experience.

Forget O'bree and Lockyer, they have become bit players and their time is almost up. Week in, week out we have Pendlebury, Swan, Davis, Thomas and Beams as our main playmakers. 3 out of the 5 are 21yo or younger. Don't you think that makes a slight difference? Add in Heath Shaw on half back who is 22 (I think) and I'm hoping you get the picture.

These guys all need games in them and need to ply the trade for a good 2 more seasons as our main midfielders. Pendlebury has stepped up and is now a genuine damaging clearance player with superb skills. Lack polish? Your kidding. Add in Leon Davis with his superb skill set and there is hardly a problem with polish. Both these guys gave us the lead last week, it was solely down to them in the midfield getting on top.

Thomas has good skills, except after gut running at full tilt. He needs time and experience to get it right. He is potential right now. Beams.....well he's been impressing but he's played 4 or 5 games.....I mean come on....

The midfield is raw. My only gripe is the gameplan isn't helping but with those 3 young guns, plus Sidebottom still to debut, I'm confident the future onball division is in good shape. A transition is happening.

Didak is a star forward and only a forward. He should stay there.

I just think its a little rich people having a pop at Collingwood's midfield when its hardly the major drama. Even so, I remember it wasn't so long ago that Hawthorn's gun midfield were a bunch of turnover machines while they were developing and......here's the key.....were honing a gameplan which took years to get right. First they had to get their skills right.....I distinctly remember it because I remember thinking how pathetic they looked.

Now look, they have quality there in the guts with their main playmakers and a gun on half back and they are all (Sewell, Mitchell, Hodge, Bateman, Lewis....) 24yo or older, except for Lewis. Go figure.

We just plucked two of the above out of our VFL side and they were outstanding yesterday. And apart from Corrie and Wellingham we also have McCarthy Dick Stanley and Sidebottom waiting in the wings. And another 3-4 first year players like Rounds Blight and Francis. Depth and polish is ok. All we need is to get some games into these kids.

Firstly, don't get too carried away about your last game. You played a side that made Richmond look like contenders, so go easy on expectations.

Secondly, you have a few likely types who are kids and need gametime and development. My critisism of your current 22's lack of polish is self-evident, but I'm not saying that the required elements don't exist in your squad.

Beams looks like he's got the goods to me. He'll develop into a player capable of orchestrating quick transition. Can run and carry, can dispose, knows where to run, will contest the loose ball, appears that he understands the game ... needs developing.

Galactico, I read a little bit of your post but stopped after it became clear that you're not capable of critically evaluating the team you support. Don't take it as critisism, every team needs supporters like you. We have 'em too ... there were thousands of angry Hawks when Schwabb got sacked and thousands who were personally affronted when Mark Graham and Joel Smith got pushed. God bless 'em.

I'm not but the game against North IS the thread topic.

Wellingham is an example of the type of player we are patiently developing. Its not the first decent game he's played with us - in fact he did well on Ablett last year. Corrie (and Brad Dick) is the type of player that Essendon killed us with last week that we are trying to bring into the side. Both Wellingham and Corrie have now been in the system a few years and can be expected to start to deliver results pretty much immediately. And Dick isnt far behind but lost a year with a knee.

Same applies to Stanley, when he gets the opportunity, he will have 3-4 years behind him and will be expected to slot straight in.
