Not Giving In and Never Tear Us Apart (songs)

NTUA seemed to come on a bit late and a bit quiet at the start. - I guess it couldn't be late because it was played in the last minute, but there seemed to be other noise/stuff on the PA system and it appeared to be rushed compared to the showdown.

I did notice #18 for Brisbane lining up on the eastern wing looking at the big screen at the northern end for about 5 seconds at around 20 seconds to go.

The crowd around me seemed to start signing near the end of the 2nd of the 3 verses the - But some of us don't know why - line and then sang most of the 3rd verse and belting out - And they could never ever tear us apart - line.

I did hear the start and most of Not Giving In this week, unlike at showdown. Probably because there was a bigger gap between the end of the Lions song - a bit of no noise - then the bass drum of Not Giving In kicks in and then lyrics and people start clapping to the beat and players aren't at the top of the race and the fans aren't going wild to drown out the sound yet, unlike the Showdown.

Whether its in this song period, or play period the noise and roar from the southern stand with the echo off the roof is very loud. There was probably 9,000 people in the stand today, it will be amazing when its full of Port only supporters.

no one around me sang and thats the way i like it, singing at a sporting event is un australian...... unless we are all drunk. still think its a great song to play as a build up to the game and it does get the blood pumping for the start but dont really think a singalong is the way to go. just let the song build up to the start, sit back, take it all in, then the big carn port on the siren and its happy days.

Im so sick of hearing this un-australian shit. Get over it.

If its good for the club who gives a flying ****.

It's a great idea to build atmosphere and intimidation.

Im not taking a shot at you or anything but people in general that go on about things being "un-australian"

Being Australian is Un-Australian.

Wow, that would have looked cool.
Another great initiative by the club :)

I don't think NTUA is ever going to be a YNWA style singalong, sorry folks. For a start YNWA has a clear sporting metaphor and NTUA is a love song, which is a tad less relevant.

I'm all for keeping it as a 60 second countdown, but I don't think it's going to go any further than that.

It may not be a sporting metaphor but it is a Port Adelaide recent history metaphor.

Give it a chance.

Btw YNWA is a show tune from Carousel so you know...

I get that, but... okay, in this metaphor what does the whole "making wine from your tears" thing represent? :D

Yup I know.

Port is fortified wine.

We are fortified as a club and we will reduce our opposition to tears.

Garry Gary Beers told me.

If I hurt you, I'd make wine from your tears...

For mine, this is is referring to the pain of 2011-12 for the AFL arm of the club and also the wilderness that the Magpies have been in since 1997. It's saying 'Hey, there were mistakes made, but we've made the best of them and become a stronger club.' Also, the tears of 2012 got us Wines, so there's always that angle...

That's how I interpret that line in regards to Port Adelaide.

Please, no. I just had the tv on in the background and a Nascar event came on. The pre-race "entertainment" nearly made me puke.

Was it Amercas most patriotic rock band???? National anthem + Rock +NAAAAASCAR = MERICA

Skip to 2:30. This bloke sings like 4 verses of the national anthem.

.....

Whenever I hear someone say that's un-Australian I think well that person is being un-Australian. Dissent and change is as Australian as anything I can think of.

It used to be very Australian to get to the pub after work, have 10 beers line up for the 6 o'clock swill when pubs had to stop serving by 6, get drunk as a skunk, have a good chunder and then go home and abuse the wife and kids. How come nobody says there's nothing more Australian than a 6 o'clock swill anymore?? Because things change.

Binge drinking alcoholism and domestic abuse is no longer Australian? Well I'll be...

On a more serious note, why don't we dial it back a bit, say "its un-south Australian", release Boak and the rest, cancel all interstate memberships, and shut up shop past the SA borders?

I get what they are trying to say with the un-Australian angle, I think a better way to say it would be soulless copying of something from foriegn culture. We aren't doing that. We are creating something original, that may be inspired by outside sources, and if it works, it will work because of that. It is not "un-Australian" in the slightest.

I can't speak for whoever used the term in this thread to start this little brushfire, but the term "un-Australian" is more often than not used tongue-in-cheek these days anyway. I think most people are well aware of how dumb it is.

Really want the club to persist with the songs (which i believe they will).

Our supporters would really have to embrace it for it to have maximum effect. If that confidence grows, it'll be great to turn down that wonderful PA system and let the crowd make all that noise.

PAFC have always been pioneers. We're not just a CEEEEEENTRAAAALS, COOOOOLLLLIIINNNNGWWWOOOOOOOOOOD, FREEEEEEEEEOOOOO (which i also think sound great btw).

'Nah, bugger that' i say. Take it to the next level.
