Not a great start to the 2nd round of Sheffield Shield matches for any of the incumbent or prospective Australia batsmen so far.

Renshaw - 2
Konstas - 2
Harris - 26

Khawhaja - 0
Smith - 3

The Lampshade has 7* off 22 deliveries, so we'll hold judgement on his innings.

Handscomb the pick of the wannabe openers, with 64. Carey's 42 looks to be an OK score too.

Just reading the Vic vs NSW thread, apparently Konstas unlucky to be given LBW. Some OP's saying it would have missed leg stump comfortably.

For some reason Carey has had to fight harder than any wicket-keeper in a long time.
The WA crowd talk Inglis up as if he's the next Gilchrist.

They do the same with Lance Morris, apparently the reincarnation of the great DK Lillee. All I've seen of him is him getting smacked around big time in the BBL....

Marnus out

Even factoring in the inevitable Jimmy Peirson century we're sitting okay

Right on cue, a 90+ run 7th innings partnership.

We all know how this will go

They'll chip away at the lead and we'll go into the 2nd innings with slender lead (under 50 runs) before the inevitable 2nd innings collapse.

Hunt made an impressive 130 odd. Seemed to be talked about a fair bit 2-3 years ago, but has had a lean run, especially since he was given the captaincy.

Was an absolute mare of a year for him at shield level, outside of one big 100 against Queensland I think at the Gabba.

Hopefully he can get his form back as I think he can be a quality player.

McAndrew has been a very handy pick-up for us over the last few seasons.

Runs in all day with the ball and is often left to make runs lower down

Manenti, Scott, McInerney, Lehmann, Agar.
5 players who would struggle to get anywhere near another states XI.

Head, Johnson obvious players missing.
Surely there's 3 better prospects out there for the others above.

Pope, Nielsen, Doggett, Sangha and Kelly worth investing games into instead.

Harsh on Scott, he's got a decent skill set. Manenti should be a white ball player only and I reckon you're spot on with the other 3.

Not sure there's a great deal beneath them though, which is a constant criticism I have of our grade system.

The problem is that there's not.

We just don't produce the level of quality cricketers compared to other states because we have way too many district teams and the talent is spread too thin.

Pretty much every review into SA cricket always has the same outcome that there needs to be less district teams, but attempting to cull them seems to almost be impossible.

... and another failure by our test batsmen - Mitch Marsh out for 9.

So far our Test batting lineup has achieved the following in this round of Shield matches:
Khawaja - 0
Lampshade - 22
Smith - 3
Head - DNP
Marsh - 9
Carey - 42
Cummins - DNP
Starc - 1
Lyon - 17
Hazlewood - DNP

... and the candidates for the opening position
Konstas - 2 (really bad LBW decision)
Harris - 26 & 16
Renshaw - 2
Bancroft - 8

With the 1st Test against India less than a month away, those are hardly form lines inspiring of confidence!

Classic Redbacks, lose wicket off first ball

We are depending on Lehmann
Hunt out for a duck after some outlets no doubt ran with “forgotten opener back in Test race” after his hundred yesterday just proves there is some sort of curse David Warner has placed on every player touted to replace him as Test Opener.

Davey was in Zimbabwe recently for some dodgy tournament maybe he caught up with a Witchdoctor while over there to further enhance the curse.

I mean India got rolled for under 50
