Re: The 'obscure footballers of the 1990s' thread.

Troy Schwarze.
Am I right in thinking there was a brother, Ben around too?

Was on North's list. Played a few senior games IIRC.

Beautiful long raking kick and loved to bang them vfrom outside 50.

Unfortunately, pretty shit at every other aspect of the game.

How about Craig Turley?!

Eagles traded to Melb and i think he did a pre-season and packed his bags for around the globe surf safari!!

True sandgropper spirit!!
WIN!...Ben Davies, (maybe 2005) former sydney player? Came to North and quit half way through his first pre-season. remember seeing an article at the time and he actualy said he would try to get injured because he didnt want to play lol.
I always wondered what happened to McAdam who was an opportunist forward for North (say about 1993)
First game vs richmond 7 goals
second game vs sydney 10 goals
kicked 60+ goals after working his way into the side mid year...by 95 he was gone.

Yep played for north as a defender. Was good at vfl level, but didnt do much else.

Brad Boyd - Last captain of Fitzroy. Went to Brisbane in 97, only played a handful of games...dissapeared for-ever!

Just watching a bit of Footy Flashbacks...

Tim McGrath
Glenn Kilpatrick
Shannon Gibson
Richard Taylor

All solid names that haven't made much of a mention on this thread. McGrath was a good player, reliable HBF for the Cats. Kilpatrick was a centreman who was thereabouts for a while but never quite made it. Gibson seemed to have a shitload of talent (kicked 2 in the first quarter at Kardinia Park in this match, had some other handy disposals). Richard Taylor ended his career at WCE if I recall correctly.

Re: The 'obscure footballers of the 1990s' thread.

From West Coast:

Laurie Bellotti
David Haynes
Kane Munro
David Antonowicz
Brandon Hill
Jaxon Crabb
Travis Gaspar
Andrew McDougall
Joel Duckworth
Scott Bennett
Troy Wilson
Daniel McConnell
Shane Sikora
Ashley Blurton

just remembered the guy i was thinking of.

in 1996 i had the AFL computer game. i was about 12. i always used to throw Craig Smoker in as my gun midfielder. I was so sure at the time i was a genuis and he was gonna be one of the best players in the league. he never played a game.

This is more early 90s but does anyone remember Danny Del-re? I found an old 'best of 1992' video when moving house recently and in that 1992 season he was brilliant, especially in the qualifying final against us.

Laurie Belloti ended up playing in Carnarvon at the age of 25 I think, was a short career. Ashley Blurton was fantastic for West Perth before getting drafted, his family were decent people too.

Bluey McGrath was our backline general for a long time. 200+ games and went on to captain our VFL side to a premiership side IIRC.

I was also a massive fan of "Oysters" Kilpatrick.

Another forgotten Cat from around the same time is the great Derek Hall. No doubt the inspiration for our current crop of nude-nuts.

Alright, that's pushing it..

Michael Sexton = Not at all Obscure.

Ben Sexton = Somewhat Obscure.

Coodabeens interviewed Ben Sexton a few weeks back as part of their "Less famous footballing brother of a famous player" segment.

Tim Elliott.

mornington boy who went on to dominate the mpnfl down here, gun local footballer

Troy Schwarze.
Am I right in thinking there was a brother, Ben around too?

playing coach of sorrento in the mpnfl and doing very well

Brad Boyd - Last captain of Fitzroy. Went to Brisbane in 97, only played a handful of games...dissapeared for-ever!

running a real estate business down here in mt martha, has kids that play at the local club, see him around the grounds when my boys play mt martha

Bump.

Will add a few obscure Saints from recent years:

Olly Trand - Big fella who was rookie-listed for a year. Don't really remember anything else about him

Josh Dicketts - Was excited when we snared him with the first pick in the rookie draft. Was touted as a 20-30 pick in the National Draft that slipped. Had an issue with the training workload and went back to Bendigo before Christmas, never to return (if I remember correctly)

Justin Berry - Was a very talented player at local level. After getting de-listed by the Saints went on to have a reasonable VFL career. I think he's back running around somewhere between Cranbourne and the Peninsula nowadays

Fred Campbell - Watson's first pick-up (from Sydney). Was touted as a lightning-quick goalsneak, but we got an average-paced VFL benchwarmer.

Kurt Hazlewood - HBF/Winger who we recruited with a late pick somewhere in the early 00's. Didn't crack a game.

Murray Pitts - Rookie-listed Saint who once again, didn't manage a senior game. Was a big fella who could play either end. No idea what happened to him after his brief AFL fling.

Mark Wittison - Big lump of a ruckman. Didn't play a game with the Saints. Once again, not sure where he ended up after St Kilda.

Josh Houlihan- I was excited when we picked him up in the 2001 "Super" Draft. Was touted as the best of the Houlihan brothers. Didn't crack a game in his couple of years at the club, despite some reasonable VFL form at times. I remember him being the only senior-listed player to not get a game in 2002. Typical Houlihan: skinny, tricky sort of HFF. Where did he end up?

For the Swans, i'm trying to pick out some bit part players that played a few games for us rather than the ones that played once and never again.

Simon Arnott
Gerrard Bennett
Simon Feast
Stefan Carey
Robbie Ahmat - (might be a good shout that one)
Mark Orchard - came from Collingwood and went back there 2 years later.
Ryan O'Connor - maybe?
Ricky Mott - Missed a shot near the end of a game vs the Bombers from about 25m out straight in front to win it, dont think he played much after that and went to Carlton the next year.
Brett O'Farrell - one season with us, 2 with the hawks after it.
Brent Green - Got him from Brisbane and looked promising with with 6 goals in his first 3. Retired at the end of the year. (On an unrelated note, i think i learnt last year that he actually passed away (drowned whilst surfing))

He was at Collingwood before Sydney wasn't he? Wasn't he involved in some racial vilification incident aswell?

Can't quite recall that, but yup we did get him from the Pies. I do remember he kicked one of the goals of the year for us though vs Kangaroos, there is a vid of it on youtube. Don't think he did much else. :p
