Entertainment & Music Ocha's Hottest 100 Song Contest songs

Remove this Banner Ad

Sorry for the intrusion general boardee's. I started posting my favourite 100 songs from my time in the Song Contest thread (kinda, I've cheated to include plenty more!). I realised though that it would spam the thread too much so here it is instead.

Original comment edited to make sense - I've drunk alcohol for the first time this year tonight (unfortunately breaking a new years resolution) with my lovely visiting family. I'm entering my 100th contest and as such hope to celebrate the spirit of of the SC by posting a list of my top 100 songs nommed by my truly wonderful fellow contestants. Hopefully I can keep my word for once and finish the list.

About the making of the list - This is my terrible taste and not objective. If you disagree with my list you're probably right. The only excluded song contestant is Ocha. Most SC participants will hopefully be included. Apologies if you're not. Listed songs are from round 827 to current, skipping 2 rounds I wasn't a participant.

I would be remiss not to give a shoutout to the SC, they're a fantastic bunch. If you want to join the SC it's easy, fun and you'll probably discover plenty of awesome music to love like I have.

Bold = song was new to me when nominated.

Thanks heaps Gralin for moving the posts!

Ocha's hottest 100 songs-

Let's not waste time -

100 - fuzzyone - "Poor Fish" nominated by Ulahoopski

The essence of what the SC is all about. Nomming something personal and not giving a damn about the potential blowback. Oh yeah, this song has heart and some sneaky killer bass. I consider myself lucky to have heard this.

99 - LE SSERAFIM (르세라핌) 'Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard's wife' – Chipmunk
Next up is a neglected genre of the SC. This is sexy af and something I've gotten loose with a complete stranger without inhibition at, say, Yah Yah's for example to something similar.

98 - Mari Samuelson – Violin Concerto, 2nd mvt Purple7x08_24

You know those times you hear a piece of music that makes you stand up straight and walk just that bit taller? This exemplifies that. Walk on.

97 - Interpol – “All the Rage Back Home” Loonerty

Not a favourite SC Interpol song but as someone who embraces previous failures and strives to do better next time this song hits the spot. And that distinct riff... *chefs kiss.

96 - Nabihal Iqbal – “This World Couldn’t See Us” Stokey

If your ever feeling contemplative as to why things are the way they are, this song hits you over the head with "because that's the way they are dummy". It's matter of fact, subdued tone slay your doubts.

If I stop I won't pick it up again so let's keep going (reminder bold title = it was new-to-me) -

95 - Salsa Suprema – “Que Corto Es El Amor” Stokey

(not the original video sorry couldn't find)

Already our first repeat entrant (and one of my fav SC's with probably the most diverse taste). This latin jam puts smiles on faces and makes the prospect of breaking out into a bachata irresistible.

94 - The Chicks - "Sin Wagon" Fossie 32

If a live performance is meant to leave you transfixed than consider this a job well done. Dem solos.

93 - Jack White – “Sixteen Saltines” The Filth Wizard

You want to do something stupid like surf down the escalator or try to replicate the backflip you did on the trampoline eons ago? Listen to this first.

92 - The Bangles – “Hazy Shade of Winter” Tonga Bob

This is an example of a single part carrying the whole song. And that's what the riff does. My imperfect analogy is when Ben Ronke kicked 7 goals and laid 10 tackles against Hawthorn to drag them over the line (because I don't think the Bangles are quite the household name).

91 - Marc Forster – “Au Revior” MWPP

Sometimes you can distinctly recall the first time you heard something, like this song. I played the SC playlist this featured in to a car-full of mates and my sister going to a wedding. Inevitably this was the unanimous pick.

Already think this was a bad idea but anyhow -

90 - Combined achievement award - Massive Attack (Red Light Means Go, Protection, Silent Spring and Angel) Riviat, Chipmunk x2 and Tonga Bob

Massive Attack was one of the first artists I liked that wasn't a rock/metal band. As such they hold a special place in my heart for breaking me out of a sheltered cocoon.

89 - dArtagnan – “Ruf der Freiheit” spudmaster

A folk metal epic with a catchy anthemic chorus? How is there 87 better songs than this (there might not be, I've probably lost count).

88 - David Guetta ft Kid Cudi – “Memories” MP_

Kid Cudi is a strange artist where his best tracks are constantly features (with Kanye in particular). Wish he'd have embraced the dance scene more like with Day 'N' Nite

87 - Queens of the Stone Age – “Mosquito Song” Frederico_WA

My most Billy'd contestant (surprisingly not harvey or spud!) tickled my fancy on this. Love the weirdness and transistions here. It's also another case of liking an unpopular nommed song of a multi-nommed artist.

86 - Combined achievement award - Kenya Grace (“Strangers”, “Meteor” and "It's Not Fair") Chipmunk, Saint and por_please_ya

Another cool aspect of the song contest is expanding your knowledge of an artist. Heard (and loved) Strangers before but was pleasantly shown that Kenya is far from a one trick pony.

85-81
85 - Black Marble – “Johnny and Mary” Plugger35 -

Sometimes less is more. The relatively subdued beat with understated musings sneaks it's way into the feels. Hopefully this gives Plugger extra motivation to nom these guys again.

84 - Janis Joplin - "Kozmic Blues" raskolnikov -

This is a kitchen sink song. Everything is thrown at this, piano, horns, a bluey lead, vocals that range from soft and sultry to the best darn imitation of Robert Plant you could find.

83 - The Kills - “No Wow” The Filth Wizard -

This is a slow build up masterpiece. The edgy static sets the tone and the lead vocals carries a gravitas that signals a sense of urgency.

82 - Weyes Blood - “Andromeda” omgfridge -

A trippy Americana ballad that feels like embarking on some bizarre adventure. The sliding guitars work so well to create the atmosphere.

81 - Flight Facilities ft Drama - "Move" por_please_ya -

The title says it all. It's a bop. The "danciness" of the synths combine seamlessly with the encouraging vocals to create a piece that will indeed get you moving.

80-76
80 - Artist achievement award - The Beatles (Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Here Comes the Sun, Rock 'n' Roll Music, Ticket to Ride, Things We Said Today, Hey Jude, Now & Then and She's a Woman) - 1990crow x2, Fossie 32 x3, raveneyes, purple and SM

Here's a great example of my inconsistencies (and thus hopefully another reminder not to take this exercise seriously) - I Billy'd my favourite song above - Here Comes the Sun. But yeah, it's the Beatles. I couldn't add anything that hasn't been said about them already.

79. Shania Twain - "Man! I Feel Like A Woman! - spudmaster -

I honestly don't think this song is objectively good (SC doesn't either given it was Billy'd lol). All I know is if it's playing I'm belting it out. Every time. And that counts for something.

78 - Artist achievement award - Weezer - (In the Garage, Buddy Holly, Jacked Up, Hashpipes, Africa) myblueroan, Frederico_WA, The Filth Wizard x2 and Cap.

Enjoy how this band combines 90's garage rock with a generous serving of purist 50's/60's pop vocals on top (in their prime at least).

77 - Shunzo Ohno - In the Sky - Stokey

I love when there's title to song correlation. Here the high pitched synths elevates a propulsive jazz rhythm to, indeed, take flight.

76 - Tensei - Birds Eye View - ChatPile

Boy do I miss Chatty who is a master of the deep cut. Without them there's simply no way I get listen to this wonderful, smooth, contemplative number.

75-71
Jeez Louise we're only a quarter through smh.

75. The Weather Station – “Atlantic” MWPP

Sometimes all you need to do I hear one song to know you're listening to masters of their craft. And this song (or any from the majestic Ignorance album) exemplifies this well.

74. Macross - “82-99 F.M.” Pickitt

What a fusion of genre this is, a jazzy, techno, disco-ish, croon-ish melding to form something even greater than it's parts. The anime film in the vid (Akira) is a great hang too fyi.

73. The Birthday Massacre – “Red Stars” Riviat -

I'm learning I like a fusion of genre's in songs haha. Here a delightfully sludgy industrial riff is superseded by angelic vocals and then interchanged back and forth throughout the song.

72. Sneaker Pimps - "6 Underground" and "Small Town Witch" Tonga Bob and por_please_ya -

Including both as, despite 6 Underground being the classic tune, I appreciated discovering more of their discography. I'm cheating so much with this "top 100" already lol. Let's continue that trend...

71. Artist achievement award - Nick Cave (Do You Love Me?, Get Ready For Love, Jubilee Street) FreoGirl and omgfridge x2.

Giving a darling SC artist their due. Prior to this contest I only enjoyed Red Right Hand and the song I nommed.

Sorry for the intrusion general boardee's. I started posting my favourite 100 songs from my time in the Song Contest thread (kinda, I've cheated to include plenty more!). However I was spamming the thread so will finish the list here.

The 100-71 songs start here - https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/thre...-9pm-aest-time.1379084/page-113#post-83949072

I would be remiss not to give a shoutout to the SC, they're a fantastic bunch. If you want to join the SC it's easy, fun and you'll probably discover plenty of awesome music to love like I have.

Lastly, if you disagree with my list you're probably right! On with the show!
would you like them moved here so all your posts are in one spot?

72. Sneaker Pimps - "6 Underground"

It's a song I constantly feel like I heard as a kid as '90's trip-hop sounds like home. (Along with eurodance, trance, happy hardcore and hardcore.)

Like I'm back to being 5-6 years again.

70-66
70. Lady A - "I Need You Now" MP_ -

A controversial winner iirc. Pitch perfect country vocals and timing make it more than worthy of a spot on this list.

69. Billy Woods & Kenny Segal – “Babylon by Bus” omgfridge -

Sick flow + inventive references and beat = winner. Being short and sweet helps too.

68 - Billie Eilish - "No Time to Die" - Dinsdale -

Not ashamed to admit that I've played this on loop. Suits a wallowing mood lol. The brass section and vocals pack a wallop.

67 - Etta Marcus - "Theatre" - Ulahoopski -

The most voted for song in my time in the SC currently has only 214k views. The so-earnest-it-hurts tone is epitomised by the universal truth "I want to be loved". Thankful this song is at least loved by the SC cohort.

66 - Talisk – "Storm" - por_please_ya

A Eastern European folk sesh that feels like a perfect accompaniment to a campfire. I imagine this would be as fun to play as it is to listen to..

65-61
65. Modest Mouse - "People as Places as People" - Plugger35 -

Modest Mouse is a favourite band so this wasn't being left off. Their distinctive "twang" for lack of a better phrase is always appealing.

64. Telenova - “Scarlet” - TubbsFarquhar

The flow, let alone the vocals, during the chorus is a god-tier level of performance and song-writing.

63. Big Thief – “Shark Smile” Loonerty

That deep guitar sound grounds the rolling vibes of the vocals. Bruce Springsteen would be proud of this effort from another of my favourite bands.

62. Artist achievement award - Go_A – ("Rusalochki” and “Kalyna”) - por_please_ya and omgfridge -

I love how these songs don't comprise of the usual dance sounds but invariably feel like something you could rave to. Adds a mysteriousness I suppose.

61. Tommy Emmanuel - "Classical Gas" - dogs105 -

Acoustic guitar pieces where it seems like there's multiple players hold a special place in my heart. Therefore this particular song is like catnip.

60-56
60. Green Day – “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” - Rodney Dangerfield -

This was once my favourite song. It slipped a bit once I learnt to play it (it's bloody simple lol). That simplicity though allows for the catchiness on the melody to shine.

59. The Decemberists – “After the Bombs” NaturalDisaster -

The tone is equivalent of having a relaxing time cruising down a stream on an inflatable lobster raft... Except you're also in a post-apocalyptic hell... And it works!

58. Christine and the Queens - "5 Dollars" MWPP -

Not going to be a popular pick given I was the only one that voted for it at the time but I'd encourage people to revisit it as it has interesting instrumentals at the very least, in particular the percussion.

57. Arooj Aftab – “Raat Ki Rani” Stokey -

So relaxing it feels medicinal. Arooj has been compared to Sade and rightfully so. She's already in her echelon.

56. The Chiffons – “One Fine Day” TubbsFarquhar -

I imagine this has been played in a film where the protagonist puts some sunnies on in a convertible before taking off along a beachside road. It's the vibe you know.

Got to love the power of nostalgia haha. As an extreme example there's plenty of music I love to bits (eg the Linkin Park Live in Texas album) that I wouldn't even enjoy if I listened to it now for the first time.

55-51
55. Alcest – “Déliverance” and “Kodama” Purple and Riviat -

It's a little strange putting an artist so high when I need to be in a certain mood to enjoy. But when I want something epic these guys deliver in abundance.

54. Superbus - "The Radio Song" por_please_ya -

Sometimes first impressions mean so much, I actually watched the youtube of this and found it hilarious which indubitably enhanced my enjoyment of this radio-friendly (heh) jam.

53. Myrath – “Tales of the Sands” Ulahoopski -

Some more epic metal goodness with some added traditional Middle Eastern instrumentations thrown in? Sign me up.

52 - US Girls - "So Typically Now" omgfridge -

Funky and in a non-typical (double heh) way either. The soft vocal delivery gives it another point of difference as does the subject matter (dodgy real estate shenanigans).

51 - Iron Maiden - “Hell on Earth” NaturalDisaster -

3 epic metal songs in one grouping. I should've spread them out more. Amazed that this record was even made given the health condition of the lead singer at the time.

Ocha.

Do you have certain times of day where you can enjoy particular songs?
or days of the week. Asking for a friend who enters the Song Contest

Ocha.

Do you have certain times of day where you can enjoy particular songs?
That's an interesting question Redman.

I haven't considered the time of day important but I think it does matter sometimes. Eg. I'm going to enjoy high energy genres like metal, edm, punk less when I'm trying to unwind (usually late at night) and more when I'm trying to get pumped up for the day like in the morning. I usually listen to ambience/instrumentals when I'm working/studying if I can as it's not as distracting.

So short answer yes! But it's not always consistent (if I'm out at night I want those high energy genres). How about you?

It's top 50 time! I'm surprised to get this far tbh.

Could these next tunes really eclipse the bundle of joy that proceeded them?

Let's find out together.

50 - The Veronicas – “4ever” eth-dog -

A keystone teen wish fulfilment anthem that's catchy as all get-out. Takes you back to a time when the possibilities seemed endless.

49- Andrew Belle – “Drought” MWPP -

Every word of this is imbued with such sincerity and feeling that it proudly represents the "pour your heart out" genre.

48 - Cog – “The Middle” and “Bird of Feather” hotchilli and Riviat -

Two great songs with considered messages although they're very different in execution. The Middle being an experimental Odyssey whilst Bird of Feather is a powerful anthem.

47 - Mis-Teeq - Scandalous - Chipmunk -

This classic is timeless but also epitomises the glorious late 90's-early 00's RnB era. The beat or acapella would even make the list separately.

46 - Alex Albrecht – “Adam’s Charm” endure -

Last in this grouping is a pearler from the most unique nommer in SC history (and sorely missed). Put this on and let your mind be both put at ease and swept away.

If it’s something easy like trip hop, definitely mornings and late arvo.

If I’m playing stuff you’d hear from Ministry of Sound, anytime past 8pm.

45-41
45 - Mulatu Astatke – “Tezeta” myblueroan - sorry Stokey -

Each listen of this jazz number feels fresh. I never know where it's going, just that I want to be along for the ride.

44 - Roscoe – “Midlake” TubbsFarquhar -

If I had my way this is like a flagship song of music. This hooked me from the first second hearing it and never lets go.

43 - Belinda Carlisle - “Summer Rain” Purple7x08_24 -

A great example for how inventive pop can be with its xylophone-like percussion sounds and funky strings. And that chorus!

42 - Cloud Nothings – “Stay Useless” and “Final Summer” omgfridge -

A great jam band that keeps on keeping on. Perfect driving music.

41 - The Beach Boys – “God Only Knows” Tonga Bob -

It could be considered outrageous that a contender for the greatest song of all time isn't number 1. But reaching 41 on this list is an even bigger achievement I swear.
