Interesting concept and love the effort you're making. I've tried to do this with a top 500 playlist but it got so hard to do.

I think the problem for mine was that my musical tastes change frequently. For example, while I still love Eluveitie very much I don't have a lot of desire to play their music while I'm hitting other artists hard RN. Pretty much how you feel about well known songs nominated in the SC, you prefer to vote for the newer stuff because it's unfamiliar and interesting.

I've done something slightly different in that I've set up a rolling playlist of my NOW music. Sometimes it's 30 songs, sometimes 50 but it's stuff I'm heavily invested at the current point in time. I've recently modified the list and will keep going through the list to refine it further seeing if some old songs can get back in the mix like November Rain which was always a nostalgic favorite.

The hardest part about ranking

80 - Artist achievement award - The Beatles (Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Here Comes the Sun, Rock 'n' Roll Music, Ticket to Ride, Things We Said Today, Hey Jude, Now & Then and She's a Woman) - 1990crow x2, Fossie 32 x3, raveneyes, purple and SM

Here's a great example of my inconsistencies (and thus hopefully another reminder not to take this exercise seriously) - I Billy'd my favourite song above - Here Comes the Sun. But yeah, it's the Beatles. I couldn't add anything that hasn't been said about them already.

79. Shania Twain - "Man! I Feel Like A Woman! - spudmaster -

I honestly don't think this song is objectively good (SC doesn't either given it was Billy'd lol). All I know is if it's playing I'm belting it out. Every time. And that counts for something.

78 - Artist achievement award - Weezer - (In the Garage, Buddy Holly, Jacked Up, Hashpipes, Africa) myblueroan, Frederico_WA, The Filth Wizard x2 and Cap.

Enjoy how this band combines 90's garage rock with a generous serving of purist 50's/60's pop vocals on top (in their prime at least).

77 - Shunzo Ohno - In the Sky - Stokey

I love when there's title to song correlation. Here the high pitched synths elevates a propulsive jazz rhythm to, indeed, take flight.

76 - Tensei - Birds Eye View - ChatPile

Boy do I miss Chatty who is a master of the deep cut. Without them there's simply no way I get listen to this wonderful, smooth, contemplative number.

Tensei has been one of my best funds from the SC.

40-36
40. D:Ream - "U R the Best Thing" - Purple7x08_24 -

Some contestants like Purple take pride in matching their nom to the theme. And boy was this fitting for the New Years round. The bouncy keys and stratospheric vibratos holds puts time on fast forward.

39. The Ascent of Everest - "Alas, Alas! The Breath of Life!" Riviat -

When I see a 10+ minute song be nommed I tremble as a significant amount of my time could be wasted. "It better be good" I think. Thankfully this is so much more than good, with post rock expertly infused with wondrous strings that will indeed have you climbing mountains.

38. Sam Cooke - “Twistin’ the Night Away” spudmaster -

A classic mood lifter, put this on doing chores and it will become a good time will eventuate. Just make sure to do them at night so you don't get confused.

37. Brass Against ft Sophia Urista - "The Pot" - Tonga Bob -

Spoiler alert: Tool is not on the list (stop throwing stuff at me!). So why does this cover of Tool make it? I love how the brass brings a levity and funkiness to the denseness of the OG material. As for the vocals at the end.. phwoar!

36. Le Matos – “Montrose” MP_ -

The synthwave of this hits just hits the retro-spot. No shame if you imagine rollerblading past palm trees at sunset in legwarmers whilst listening to this.

35-31
35. Neba Solo - "Can" SSwans2011 -

Nothing beats an African chorus for creating a harmony by itself. The result is something so breezy you can't help but sway to the rhythm.

34. Anathema - "Untouchable" NaturalDisaster -

I imagine this gets played at fundamental Christian or self help seminar events as it creates such a sense of awe. Somehow it's so cohesive with so many different elements and changes.

33. Aesop Rock - "Mindful Solutionism" Riviat -

Such a cool topic (history of technology) covered here with an intelligent depth. Love the warning of the hook as well - "If it's out of the bag, it's out of the bag". There's no going back once you've listened to this.

32. Ralph McTell – “Streets of London” GreyCrow -

So powerful and pertinent I couldn't do it justice. It's such an honest and raw appraisal of homelessness.

31. Artist achievement award - London Grammar ("Oh Woman Oh Man", "Non Believer" and "Wasting My Younger Years") myblueroan, por_please_ya and RedBullRacing -

This is my people pleaser pick... Just kidding. Of course it deserves to be on the list on merit. This band has simply mastered indie pop. Each of these songs could stand up here on their own.

30-26
30. Artist achievement award - Lana Del Rey ("Let the Light In", "Say Yes to Heaven", "The Grants" and "A&W") Purple, SM, omgfridge and Back One Out

29. Artist achievement award - Kate Bush ("Wuthering Heights", "Love and Anger" and "50 Words for Snow" Rodney Dangerfield and raskolnikov x2

The single biggest surprise making this list was how low these two artists ended up. Both Kate and Lana are two of my top 5 artists. What caused the relatively low rating considering my love for both artists is that none of these songs, whilst all great, wouldn't be in my top 20 for either.

28. Kelly Rowland – “Work (Freemasons Radio Edit)” Chipmunk

Just an immaculate performance showing an incredible range of vocals from effortless flows to glorious singing. This remix allows Kelly to shine best.

27. The Irrepressibles – “Two Men in Love” Purple7x08_24

Cliché alert - this song takes my breath away. It's stunningly beautiful. Sometimes the obvious is all that can be said but the feelings are immense in this.

26. Holding Absence – “Wilt” Ulahoopski

This is a good juxtaposition to the previous entry as whilst both conjure such strong emotions, this inverts the good vibes and instead rips your guts out. Be fair warned.

I ****ing love that Anathema song. It builds and builds and doesn't let you go for a minute. That build up to the whole band joining in is abso-****ing-lutely epic. Then when the singer puts it all out there shortly after it destroys me every time.

Wuthering Heights wouldn't be in your top 20 Kate Bush songs?

Wuthering Heights wouldn't be in your top 20 Kate Bush songs?

View attachment 2018071
There's 8 tracks from Hounds of Love alone. Plus -

The Man with the Child in his Eyes
Moving
Wow
Hammer Horror
Babooska
Army Dreamers
Breathing
Sat in Your Lap
The Sensual World
This Women's Work
Rubberband Girl
The Red Shoes
King of the Mountain
Sunset
Nocturn
Aeriel
Misty
Don't Give Up (if that counts)

So that's 26 songs listed. I admit sometimes I'd prefer Wuthering Heights (which let's not forget I think is a fantastic song) to some of the tracks listed above but it wouldn't ever be top 20. Which is amazing because Wuthering Heights would be my favourite song if most musicians had made it, hence why I love Kate so much!

Completely agree, well said. Can you write the rest of my entries?
