Yeah, it would be a tough job to sell a membership. Gives the membership department little to work with at the moment. However, the boys will deliver BIG this weekend so hopefully that gets them back on track...

I genuinely hope members of the membership department are being afforded the opportunity to cockpunch members of the playing group repeatedly.

well the staff ive seen in the membership department ( some total hotties) this would not motivate the players to play well :) use of plyers by shinboner of century would serve better

We were well set up for 35K till the Bulldogs, Port and Lions games got in the way.

Definitely. There is still a good opportunity to contact lapsed members and offer them a 3 game membership, but to do that, you need to sell the message of our progress and emergence as a side. Had we been sitting at 6:3 right now, as most of us expected, this would have been easy to do. 35k here we come. But right at the moment, the feeling is that not only haven't we arrived yet, we've lost to two sides we have comfortably beaten last year, and neither of them have been tipped to improve much this season. Oh well, we are where we are...

Yes.

The realisation that we were entering our 3rd full season of pre-season training brought any prospective finals motivated membership sales to a screeching halt.

Hmmm 180 in 7 days is about what we deserve

Still in better news
Bulldogs on 28761... a lead of 4127
Lions on 20501... a lead of 12837
Swans on 27517... a lead of 5371

Saints on 34751, Demons on 35017

Hopefully we can get another 112 and make it to 33,000

Fair to say that the Bulldogs' atrocious "Western Front" campaign has failed. And the Saints' confusing "Line In The Sand / Be The Future" duelling slogans has also left a little to be desired. Or maybe StKilda people were just afraid to cross that line in the sand separating them from the perils of Port Philip Bay.

You never know, do you - people who wanted to jump on might have just jumped sooner with a good run of home games and some good wins to start the year.

Record membership, without the fat of charity memberships or anyone feeling sorry for us, is still a bloody good result.

Geezus, that's an appalling figure.

And that figure would include their Melbourne members, of which I'd reckon there would be at least 2-3k or more.

Just shows you how hard the Qld market will be to crack, which makes the AFL GC foray all the more puzzling.

It has nothing to do with membership bases and everything to do with creating a product for television that had changed enough from the previous one to charge significantly more.

Gold Coast and GWS are worth $400m in tv rights because they cause a 9th game a round.

Red card this clown.

North Melbourne is worth $400m in tv rights because our refusal to relocate caused a 9th game a round.

I agree 100% that it was us standing up and saying no that caused the rethink.

however us standing up and saying no will also have a flow on effect of protecting other Melbourne clubs from going down the same relocation type path.

ie. If they couldn't move us when we had everything going pear shaped what hope do they have with other clubs? and what type of PR mess will it create?

A 20 team comp is more likely to be the next step, because its a business and while keeping all Melbourne clubs costs millions a 10th game a round will be worth more. Its commercial reality.

I am not sure that's entirely correct. If membership didn't matter, and it was all for TV dollar, then we may as well have Fitzroy and South Melbourne playing. It is clear that AFL wanted new markets and new people into the game. Whether that's reallistic up in Qld, I am not too sure.

Also, will TV networks be happy to pay for a 9th game (or 10th) if it's has a 155:45 score line?

My use of the word nothing was probably incorrect and it would have been better to word it that membership bases are a secondary factor to it, rather than nothing.

For sure the AFL need to break new markets, they aren't going to get the viewership required without the interest from new people.

Current expansion predicated on the idea that rivalry will build crowds. bigger crowds more interest this will also push up the TV figure.

Success is a factor for sure, it is why the new franchise clubs are being given more than other clubs entering the comp have before.

The AFL would not view gate takings(ie members) as its primary form of revenue it'd be the $1.2B they get from tv rights (and this figure wouldn't include the sponsorship that they would also derive)

That said, St Kilda members do get a personalised fridge magnet fixture thing.

Ours lacks the member name.
