The "Muller averaged 23" argument is moronic. Because he had a good average it means others with higher averages won't be better?

What is moronic is trying to argue with statistics , Muller averaged 23 odd a wicket White averages 33 odd , the White supporters brought up Muller to support their case - they were proved wrong .

White is a promising batsmen but is not as promising as a bowler , IF he gets his bowling average down he can be thought of as a potential Test allrounder not before .

On batting alone for the test side?

David Hooks thought so. As do I.

Yay or Nay?

In short - No.

Hookes thought so - what crap! Hookes considered White to be a bowling all rounder (he happens to the the opposite).

I'd say - he'll need to wait until Warne calls it a day - then he'll probably find himself in the team as the all rounder batting at number 7 (but he will need to convert some of his limited overs form to the longer version of the game to ensure it happens).

We'll never have another Gilchrist, and this would enable us to play a conventional top 6, White the spinner/aggressive batsman at number 7, with keeper and 4 x seamers occupying positions 8-11

But not before the 2007 World Cup, as the old fellas in the side will hang around until then.

Well then why did Hookes say something along the lines of "White's best chance at playing for Australia is as a no.6 batsman"?

White has all the shots, just needs to convert them into some consistency like Clarke.

Fair-haired and level-headed, Cameron White has long seemed destined to play a significant role in Australia's future. Only the precise nature of that role has baffled his admirers. Nagging legspinner? Solid middle-order bat? Intuitive skipper? Or a bit of all three? The over-eager Shane Warne comparisons that festooned his first-class arrival have long since died away. Indeed White is a peculiarly unAustralian-style legspinner, tall and robust, relying on changes of pace and a handy wrong'un rather than prodigious turn or flight. He bowls a good line and does a neat line in self-deprecation too: "There's no flippers or anything exciting like that in my repertoire," he professed a while back, "I'm just trying to get my leggie right." What is not in doubt is his cricket sense, nor his maturity. Captaining Victoria in 2003-04 at the age of 20, the youngest skipper in their history, he won rave reviews for his cool head and warm handling of more hardened contemporaries. For all that, he remains a largely unassuming country lad. Picked to tour Zimbabwe when Stuart MacGill withdrew for moral reasons, White cancelled a fishing trip to attend the press conference then boyishly shrugged aside questions about the circumstances of his selection: "I don't really know very much about politics." He was chosen as much for his no-frills batting as his bowling; David Hookes, the late Victorian coach, felt White's best chance of representing Australia was to earn a top-six spot. As far back as December 2002 his hero Warne had predicted: "I think he's a [future] Australian player provided he sticks to the way he plays and doesn't try to be someone different." Warne was right and exactly who that someone is should become clearer any day now. White made his limited-overs debut during the Super Series a year after missing a first Test cap when Nathan Hauritz was preferred in India. So far his role has been limited mostly to the side's supersub and he bowled only four overs and didn't bat in his first four games.

Re: Cameron White --> Potential Australian Top 6 batsman?

The question was whether he would make it as a top 6 batsman - the answer to that is a pretty decent no.

There are too many other batsmen out there (from various states) that are doing better then him - at the top of the list is Cosgrove and Jaques. Then there are the players with superior techniques but not as many good numbers in the right places - IE. Clarke and Marsh. And then there are the guys who are close to being to old to start or restart but could yet make it again - IE. Katich, D. Hussey, Love and a smokie in Voges. Then all his nearest alrounder buddies who might or might nto be batting well enough to get in on batting.

He might make it as an alrounder, but that is dependent on his rivals:

Symonds: More bowling variety, probably same level of batting, better fielding but no leadership aspect. Could give way through inconsistency.

Watson: Better batting technique and more valuable bowling (though fast bowling rather then spin) but plagued by injury. No leadership aspect.

Thornley: Plays for NSW(Advantage), general an equal sort of player to White but again no leadership. Again a pacer rather than spinner, White might get over him for that.

Hopes: See Thornley but plays for Qld.

Also/Ands: I feel Bailey and Cleary, whilst not in direct competition yet, are smokies to rise above some of these guys in the near future. Daniel Marsh is thereabouts also, though time and talent don't appear to be on his side.

Conclusion: Has a major advantage in being a leader and should get ahead of Hopes and Thornley and the also/ands. Will find it hard to get past the first two unless the both succumb to major injury and inconsistency OR the Australian side lacks potential leaders. Perhaps one player too many for him to get into the test side, but should make the one-day side at some stage.

Dude... White is 22.

Cosgrove granted (I got big expectations for the lad :thumbsu: ), to a lesser extent Watson but the likes of Jaques, Symonds, Thornley are (in cricketing terms) much older.

There is a few all-rounders in the Australian U19 side, namely Henriques and Tom Cooper that are probally more consistent and likely to succeed at the top level! I just think White will struggle unless you are playing in the sub-continent.

When either of them

  • Captian their state,
  • Cominate for Australia A,
  • Play for Australia
  • Get 100 FC wickets dispite being a battlng allrounder at a better average than the countries 2 most promising spinners

At 21/22 yoa, then get back to me.

But those players are competiting for the spot now - and now might be the best time for him to get into the side because the near-future attack of possibly:

Tait
Lee
Cullen
The best other bowler

And that might not be potent enough to dismiss sides twice so they might go with the alrounder over the selector preferred method of a sixth batsman for a period. But say Symonds/Watson/Thornley/Whoever plays for the next five years in that role - that is enough time for them in all probability to discover another top quality bowler. Once that happens his real opportunity to break into the side dissappears.

His one advantage is that there might be a percieved lack of leadership material around and he has this on his side. But given previous selection picks, it doesn't appear they care whether there is a strong leadership group in the side.

Re: Cameron White --> Potential Australian Top 6 batsman?

By the way, I should point out Thornely is a batsman, don't know why you think he's an allrounder

Well, whoever hands out the CA contracts overrates him. They'd be about the only ones though.

He has a CA contract and yet he is a "*******".

Perhaps he is underrated.

Re: How the ******** is Cameron White overrated?

Saying stuff like he will be a top 6 batsman for Australia and saying he is a star or a very good batsman already is overrating him. Average of 28 in State cricket is nothing to creame yourself over.

Re: How the ******** is Cameron White overrated?

Will play ODIs for Australia no doubt. I don't think he'll play many tests if not any.

He's supposed to be a bowler and yet he rearely bowls. He's supposed to be a batsman and yet he rarely makes a decent score. Just a very average player who is quickly losing pace in the run towards an Australian spot.
Couldn't of said it better myself.

1 century I believe, and he's been around for about 3 or 4 seasons.

And a bowling all-rounder who's captain and barely brings himself onto bowl (unless of course Victoria are on top and the opposition tail is in).
