Our lowest ebb was in 2008. We've come a long way since then. But still have a long way to go. This coaching decision is going to be crucial for us. I hope we make a statement this time.

I Have this gut feeling a massive announcement will be made by The Dees after the Grand Final as we land the biggest fish of all Micky Malthouse. Queens Birthday Clash 2012
Melbourne V Collingwood
Malthouse v Buckley
MCG 99,999 Crowd
Wow Just what Malthouse Wants

Apparently Ross organised this himself, upto 5 weeks ago behind his managements back....

Now doesnt have a management group

Edit - before we had a chance to contact him officially
Is that official, Mentor, that he's dumped his management or vice versa?

If so... what the?

Sounds like it'll be our Grand Final. ;)

Re: Did We Make A Mistake By Not Taking Kevin Sheedy?

Sheedy is very lucky nobody expects GWS to win next year, so he can spin all his crap and be as good as unaccountable for the results.

Truth is, Melbourne have made some mistakes, but this isn't one of them. He was past it a fair while before his contract wasn't renewed with the Bombers.

Guys as previously stated I have a mate in pr at gc. (he is also a saints man). He has told me that as of 2 hrs ago the afl is bedlam. A lot of tongues have become untied and clubs are in overdrive, Melbourne however is not making any moves as yet (out of the ord). He believes (and this is only his opinion) that whatever we have planned is unaffected by the latest news and we could be waiting until after the grand final for anything to come. Also said to watch out for some rumors from Carlton as their ears have pricked up and making enquiries. Don't take this as gospel but I'm just sharing what I have heard. This is only the beginning.

Grant Thomas on Twitter - "I'm hearing Burns is going to coach Melbourne and Neil Craig is Director of Coaching. Eade Director of coaching at Crows. Cards are falling."

Purely speculation atm but I don't think thats that bad for us. Thoughts?

Grant Thomas just tweeted he thinks Burns to coach us and Craig as director of coaching... I don't Mind the idea.... I think..??

Assuming we don't get Malthouse of course.

I wouldn't mind that to be honest. I just don't want another Bailey - I want a hard coach who won't put up with half assed efforts and allow players to get games based on who they are.

To be honest I know little about Scott Burns as a coach but sounds like he comes highly rated. Anyone shed some more light on him?

Having never played elite sport I always find it hard to make a judgement on the value of a 'master motivator'. Obviously a naturally charismatic communicator with runs on the board would be an asset, but I'm not sure that would be the criteria I'm focusing on.

In the likely event that Melbourne can't land one of those kind of blokes who also have familiarity with modern tactical football (ie Malthouse, Lyon) I'd be inclined to go with highly regarded assistants from teams who have had major success under those kinds of guys (Geelong, Collingwood).

Again, I've never played elite sport so I can't speak of the precise value, but I've always thought of the 'master motivator' angle as a bit of a cop out. If players can't find some combination of personal pride, love for the club, respect for your teammates or financial incentive to give 100% then I think the Dee's are in trouble after the first couple of minutes of the first and third quarters.

Perhaps we can assemble an Essendon like battery of highly-regarded assistants and wheel around a TV/Blu-ray setup and play Al Pacino 'Any Given Sunday' speeches when the boys need an emotional lift? ;)

Really good post mate, agree with all of it.

I can't help but feel that we dodged a (boring) bullet.

Garry just confirmed on The Footy Show that we NEVER made that $5million offer to Ross and NEVER spoke to him. As I said earlier in this thread, smoke and mirrors.

Spot on - plus it sounded to me as though the club DID put something forward for Clarkson before he re-signed with the Hawks.

Barrett also mentioned the Burns/Craig partnership for us as the other rumour for the night. If anything this means that the club needs to select who they want and do it soon before they miss out.

Wouldn't mind a Burns-Craig combo.

Burns was hard as nails as a player and is part of the Eagles brains trust - remember the Eagles arguably have the best forward press in the league. Hasn't tasted premiership success as either a player or coach though (I think).

Not big on Neil Craig but he is experienced and an intelligent man so it may not be a bad idea getting him on-board.

Craig would suit a director of coaching down to the ground...I want him at Lions though :(

Harvey....if you kick Colloney (or however the fleck you spell it) out sure..

In agreement that this would be a good combo^

Craig being the sports science guru that he is also would (hopefully) bring the type of expertise that might, for example, allow Grimes to get through a full season.

Burns' inside knowledge of WCE's game plan would be brilliant and I think a young coach would energise this group. Remember, WCE are the most improved team in the comp this year. In fact, the most improved team for many many years.

Dunno if I'm just clutching at straws, but I'm quite excited about this possibility :thumbsu:
