"Dear MFC Voting Member,

Thank you for contributing your thoughts: Your Voice Has Been Heard.

The responses showed overwhelming support (77%) for an external review. The reviews proposed, since the departure of Kate Roffey, are largely internal.

  • The Board review is to be conducted by Brad Green, the other directors and an unnamed “external independent expert” (reviewing themselves!)
  • The Football Department review is to be led by Brad Green, Gary Pert, and Darren Shand, the latter having spent time at the Club earlier in the season.
Your Key Concerns

Included with the survey responses were over 800 comments. We read them all.

The areas of concern, in order, were:

A. Leadership & Governance, specifically:

  1. The Board
  2. Former President Kate Roffey
  3. CEO Gary Pert
  4. Club Culture
  5. Member Engagement
  6. Communications

B. Football Department

A range of strong views were expressed in response to the Club finishing 14th this year, and our straight sets exits from the 2023 and 2022 finals.

C. Other

Concerns were also raised regarding Glen Bartlett's Federal Court cases and the Club’s proposed Caulfield facility.

Where to from here?

We believe the Board has a responsibility to listen to members. We contacted President Brad Green and Vice-President David Rennick last week to pass on the results of the feedback from the over 800 responses to our email. Brad responded, saying that he was busy in Grand Final week and to message him in a couple of weeks to try to work out a convenient time to catch up. These reviews are expected to be completed in October! David did not respond.

Success is built on strong leadership, open communication, and accountability. It is hard to see that these attributes are in the ascendancy at the MFC. A strong and confident Club is not afraid to consult widely with its members.

We have much that is good about our club, but we will only grow stronger by honestly and fearlessly admitting to those parts of our organisation that aren’t the best that they can be and finding ways to make improvements.

We will continue our attempts to meet with the Board to pass on your feedback. If you would like to contact Brad and/or David directly in respect of the reviews, their details are:

Clearly Goodwin is getting the license to bring his own people in. I'm fine with this as I think it would be disastrous to have his assistants be guys he doesn't want to work with. It will be his team and he is going to live or die by the sword next year.
I think it's a shit idea, doesn't sound like anythings changing just finding more blokes who'll do what he wants.

Imo it's all or nothing. If they're not going to sack him now then give him everything he needs to achieve his vision.

Picking his assistants for him would just be dying a slow death and would only cause more fractures internally.

Not if they're good assistants that can challenge him. I'd say giving him his assistants could easily be the slow death option because if Oliver and Trac come back and the assistants get the defence back to stingy we could easily be a 6-10 team again and nothing changes.

If Goodwin is still on the contest/defence bus and no one is challenging him either above or below then we're ****ed anyway. Assistants that are chosen by the board of footy boss to challenge him that he doesn't believe in just means infighting and chaos. If the club has lost trust in him to that degree then you sack him now.

Still don't think giving a guy who's failed 3 seasons in a row and overseen the culture turn to shit complete control is in anyway a good idea.

As I said if that's the belief of the club then you sack him now. Giving him babysitters would be a completely pointless exercise in my view.

It's not about babysitting it's about challenging his coaching to improve. Giving him what he wants is just doubling down in failures.

Has that ever happened before and worked? After 2016 Hardwick got a bunch of his mates back.

Not like for like though, the Tigers were building through successive finals and then had a bad year but also completely changed how they played. That's more like us 2018-20 with 19 being our shit year and then we bounced back in late 20. Now it's much worse than then.

How many coaches have gone downhill 3 years in a row after a flag and then rebuilt again? It's only poor admin that's even let it get to this point

Malthouse and Longmire off the top of my head
Pies made back to back grand finals, had 2 years down and then we're back in 5th and didn't miss finals again till 2015 or whatever after bucks was in charge.
Longmire has made finals almost every year he's been a coach. Still not the same.
Neither of their cultures completely fell apart either and had their best players wanting to leave.

There's no example that's going to be 100% like for like. Beveridge is the other example obviously with less success but he did still get the Dogs close in 21.

Still think you either back him or sack him. But we can agree to disagree on that.
