Oh Eddie Betts, where art thou?

Maybe they should have moved him into the center square at half time? To get him back into the game.

He did nothing guns, although I knew he was going to kick that goal when the game was over, should have had a bet on that.

We use him as a lead up forward against a side that gets numbers back after we slowed down the play.
Do we?

I thought we started with good structure with the talls, but I rarely saw Eddie front and square.

I agree that Betts and I'll add Waite have been disappointing.

Garlett has gone past Betts in terms of number 1 small forward.

Thornton and Walker struggling against proper defenders.

We need Henderson back for Thornton. Betts has runs on the board but needs to get his arse into gear if we are going to be a threat this year.

Eddie Betts is quick, marking forward.
Really?
Betts is as good a lead up forward as Walker is a pack mark.
Sadly both think they are good at these things and continue to bugger up our strucutre.

Walker continues to spoil teamates trying to take mark of the year instead of getting out on the early lead then doubling back to hit the pack at pace.

Eddie seems content to direct traffic from the goal square and then try and "hunt" the defender for the HTB decision when invariably he doesn't mark it. Workrate was poor tonight, and its not an isolated case.

I think he is an amazing crumbing forward who thinks he is a marking forward.
He isn't that good overhead and he isn't a good set shot. He is great on the run and has great agility.

Garlett on the other hand is good overhead and a reliable set shot.

Very harsh to roast him after two tough weeks in-a-row on All Australian defenders in Harry O'Brien and Campbell Brown. O'Brien is an especially tough match up because he is better than Betts in the air and can match him on the ground as well.

Betts was easily our best forward against the Tigers and he will bounce back against Essendon.

All this

I dont think Betts is working hard enough. And I have an off beat reason for thinking it. Its the silly shorts he wears. I know it sounds silly, like why would that make a difference. But what it tells me is his mind isnt 100% on the job 100% of the time. Unless I am reading more into it than exists, the baggy shorts usually worn low are a fashion statement, some kind of pseudo gang thing, at least I think thats what Eddie thinks it is, that and the sideways finger signs. I say lose all that rubbish Eddie, get your mind 100% on the job and work your ass off. I am surprised someone hasnt pulled him up and told him. I am sure if he gets his head right the rest of his game will follow.

Or not. Maybe I am just finding stuff that isnt there, but Eddie does not seem to be firing and needs to find it.

Also Big Nick wants his shorts back.

No offense to the original poster, but when I saw who started this thread, I was expecting some more babbling, pointless and most likely straight wrong nonsense. However, I think he actually has a point here. The "Junk Time" name is very applicable, as he does seem to pick up a lot of his goals after the result has already been determined, rather than being a part of determining the result earlier in the game.

I'm not sure if it is a communication thing between the coaches and Eddie or if it is something else, but we need to get his role sorted out. He seems to think that he is a marking target, either on the lead or overhead, when he really isn't. He needs to play like Garlett and keep moving around the forward line and hitting packs at full speed to pick up the crumbs and finish on the run.

I think he will always be a guy who steps up more when the hard work has already been done, but if he can sort out his role and adjust his attitude/game style, I think he'll still be a dangerous goal-kicker for us.

I remember i watched an interview with Betts once, they asked him about his shorts being worn low & his reply was exactly what you were thinking "it's gangsta". I agree with you, he needs to get rid of that show pony BS attitude which is a exact replica of Leon Davis, And take a note from Garlett & Yarran (knuckle down & get on with it)

Well our bottom 6 let us down. Guys like Carazzo, Thorton, Walker will always shlep out against quality and pressure, imagine if Houla was there?

The complexion of the side is changing so we will improve, but the passengers hurt us.

Betts needs to do more, regardless. He needs some confidence games and a good game against another good side.
HA HA you take a shot at Houla at every chance ha ha even when not in the side.He actually was our best player or near it in 2009 Elimination final and was up their in our best last year until hit by injuries. You shouldn't hate him because of the gay looking photos he did i know you have them posted up the wall.:D

Nice to see that at least somebody respects the opposition.
Eddie Betts is quick, marking forward. He is playing on a quick, amazingly offensive/defensive defender, who happens to be double his size.
Collingwood is the one side who has the perfect match up for him.

Harry O has destroyed Eddie Betts the last 5 or 6 times we have played the filth. Maybe the MC should try something different, Betts into the centre or give him a rest against the fagPies. Seriously he was a liability out there.

If he took as much skill, fenesse and class in gaying himself up for the camera as he did on the football field, then he would be an 'elite' talent.

But unfortunately he likes looking really pretty and gay, and often plays that way.

OT, Betts needs to 'come out' next week against the Bummers and give them a right royal reaming they will never forget!!!! Nothing less than 5 goals by Brother Eddie and a 10 goal smashing of Tird and Bomber' Oh I'm burnt out on footy' the-bullshit-artist-Thomson's filthy scum team will be accepted. If we can't bring down Bombers like a Stinger missle we should sack Ratten AND Houla!

Said the exact same thing last year, but Betts is a horribly lazy footballer, and nothing more than a 4th quarter specialist (as long as the game isn't close). Should've traded him to West Coast while he was worth something. Unfortunately now we have a small forward in Garlett that shows him up for workrate and talent. Let's be honest, do you really want this guy lining up in our Grand Final side? I'd rather Leon Davis!

I say we let him get back to his one true passion - robbing Seven Elevens and smoking ****.

Amazingly he crumbed a goal when the game was already iced. Does it every week...

... and put me out of my multi in the process the little bastard.

He always struggles against physically superior opponents. O'Brien is taller, faster, stronger, more intense and imposing... same as Campbell Brown. This alone means Betts will invariably struggle against quality teams and will let Carlton down in finals. Better off getting him up the ground into midfield where he can do some damage at clearances, however that would compromise the structure as they would be left with Waite (one of the dumbest footballers in the comp) and Hampson (duffer), and only Garlett as a small forward of any recognition.

Poor game last night. .. Didn't chip in for his usual assists and tackles*. .. I'll put it down to Harriet O but he owes the team a good showing this week. ..

Still don't understand the junk time comments. .. Last year he lead us in Goal Assists and was 2nd in the league. .. He is a top tackler, all game. .. He doesn't just assist and tackle late in the game. ..

So he gives off heaps of goals and puts pressure on all game but he is maligned because he takes a few cherries late in the game? I doubt he lead our goal kicking by kicking them all late in games either. ..

*Only Judd has more tackles than him so far this season. ..

I wonder how Jeffy would have gone if Betts wasn't there, and he had Harry O marking him all night?

Very good point. Although I think Eddie was poor last night, it is one bad game and people need to ease up a bit. Against Richmond he had 3 goals 3 behinds and 3 goals assists, that is a top class contribution, against the Suns he had 2 goals and one goal in junk time last night, but it is still 6 goals from 3 games or on track for 44 goals for the year and by any measure that is a fantastic output from a small forward.

We need 2 dangerous small forwards for our structure to work. Not many teams can defend 2 dangerous small forward. We also need tall forwards that are making contests and bringing the ball to ground for Betts and Jeff to crumb. I think with Hendo fit and Walker and Waite and the resting ruck our structure will work much better and Betts will be seen to be the valuable member of it that he is. But he also needs to get his head right. I think sometimes he takes his spot for granted. When McLean and Ellard are fit to return and if Curnow keeps firing Eddies spot will be under pressure. They are both hard at the ball and capable of playing forward. And Collins needs to keep the pressure on to keep Walker on his toes too. They cant all fit into the 22 and any of them are good enough to claim a place, but they have to keep performing to keep it and that should be especially true for Betts if he looks to be getting lazy. I am sure if he is the club will be on to it fast. He wont be dropped after 1 bad game but he needs to fire against the dons next week.

Haven't thought of this. .. cannot see why we cannot throw Betts into the middle occasionally and let Curnow take the second small forward spot (perhaps Murphy too). .. But this at least puts pressure on Eddie. ..
