Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Would any of the other 2 clubs that are searching for a new coach hire Cameron? Would they even put him on a short list?

I wouldn't think so.

I wouldn't think so.

So we ignore our ex assistant coaches, vice captains and best and fairest's as non events ?

I note Eade is on nobody's shortlist either Einstein

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

I was happy with Cameron too. But after reading the OP I'm not so sure.

Perhaps rather than you can expand in detail why my opening post has changed your opinion ?

It was my Opening Post not Leon Cameron's C.V

So why should my post shift your opinion, unless of course your trying to follow someone else's post.

Why don't you grow a brain einstein and explain why he isn't good enough to be on any other clubs shortlist.

Eade has atleast been spoken to by both clubs and has impressed. Which other club has even interviewed Cameron.

If being a vice captain and best and fairest winner of our club was a requirement then give the job to Scott West.

Just that your list of reasons seem very spurious. And when it is put together quite like that Leon seems to be an unconvincing candidate. The fact is none of us have any clue about who would be good or bad.

Plus your comparison of Eade and Wallace was blatantly wrong.

And yes it's the vibe...

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

So nobody else has interviewed Leon, eh?
Could it be that Leon has told other clubs not to bother interviewing him? [Taps side of nose]
Or that other clubs haven't bothered with him on the same assumption?

If he's the best available candidate so be it, but I would be disturbed if he really was lined up some months ago - even 12 months ago - as some posts have suggested.

It would indicate a considerable lack of respect for Eade, the other candidates, the WB supporters and the general public if that is the case. Not to mention lack of respect for proper process.

That's one reason why I would be happy of it went to the likes of Neeld or Sanderson. It would lay to rest the scuttlebutt about an inside job. But if Cameron's gets the gig we will never know for sure.

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Leon still seems to be the favorite to take our senior coaching spot

I like it

He served us well as a very young vice-captain in the 90's and a former Best and Fairest

I was left with impression he spent everything during his games much like Crossy (different skill set Crossy more of a ball finder Cameron less of a ball finder but nice foot disposal skills)

I always thought he was sharp when he was an assistant coach

Was our midfield coach for many years under Eade

Was responsible for reviewing the games, win loss or draw.

From what I have seen reported Leon ticks a lot of boxes and rightfully has to seek to tick those of the external voice on the coach selection panel, former Geelong Premiership Captain Tom Harley.

I'm also happy with the selection panel this time, Fantasia, Garlick, Grant, Harley and board member Walsh

I was a bit concerned last time when after interviewing candidate number "1" Eade that Robert Wall's as part of a 3 person panel (Scott Clayton and someone else) decided to get Smorgon to hire him there and then.

Urgency may have made that necessary but it sort of meant the process got thrown out the window.

Eade had a good run, but at the end of the day he did not get us as close to a premiership as Wallace did in 1997 as a Rookie coach with a team that included Leon Cameron in it.

And Wallace took our team from 2nd last to 3rd in 1 season, something the bitterness of his parting with the Dog's we often overlook.

I also have fond memories of when an unknown rookie ex Bulldog player coach Terry Wheeler gave our club a good ride during the early 1990's

I know some will disagree ..so be it

But I am comfortable with a highly ambitious less experienced Leon Cameron at the club he bled for rather than some other more experienced, more expensive possibly less ambitious journeymen superannuation type coaching aspirants.

Ignore some of the people on here. They will have a crack at you if you happen to dare disagree with their opinion. The purpose of this forum is to express your own opinion.

I don't have a problem with Leon Cameron being appointed as senior coach, as long as he is the best candidate chosen through a competent, independent and transparent process.

Now, is this occurring? I don't know. There certainly is a perception that Cameron is mates with select Bulldogs officials. This obviously, and rightly so, concerns a few of the people on this forum. The concern is two fold:

- will the personal friendship influence the selection of the coach?

- because of that friendship, will the Bulldogs officials seek to hire Cameron as a form of consolidating their own position within the club?

Maybe none of this is happening! I don't know. To have any idea, you would have to be close to the club and 'in the know'.

We have a bloke on the selection panel that should have his position at the club under serious review, such has been his incompetence in list management and player contract negotiations.

We are a flophouse at the moment.

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Leon Cameron is a good bloke, but I don't want him as our next coach.

He's too close to the club, we need an outsider - such as Scott Burns or my choice Brendan McCarthy, not someone who knows the players and may be too friendly with them.

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Well i hope you have calmed down on it a bit Dogs r Barking, IIRC you claimed to throw in your membership should Leon be appointed. i hope it was just you venting about Eade not having his contract re-newed and you will stay on board no matter who is the next coach :thumbsu:

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Leon Cameron will be a fantastic Coach of our Club.

Very clever guy who has been involved with two other Clubs.

Before he went to Hawthorn there was talk of him and Eade doing a Malthouse/Buckley style handover. IIRC Leon even took the reins as Head Coach for one match.

Amazing nobody here remembers this.

My guess is that Management decided that we could not afford the Collingwood style handover.

The problem for the club about appointing Leon are along the lines of

- He is a reluctant public speaker which isn't ideal for a club that needs the coach to sell the vision.
- His voice is already too familiar to the majority of the playing group and they probably need to hear someone else.
- One year away won't have built his resume substantially
- If we are truly breaking away from Rocket then don't we need someone else?

The pluses for him are

- He already has strong support at the club and someone will have to put forward an outstanding application to beat him.
- It's a very easy appointment for the committee to make without sparking a lot of questions around the recruitment process.

I just hope that the committee hadn't already made up their minds before they interviewed the others.

I think there will be an announcement early next week.

Please explain.

RL I don't remember saying I will throw in my membership, I did however question whether the club has robust governance practices and whether I should renew my membership based on this, - bit of difference I would have thought.

How would you feel if you were going for a job and heard that someone already has been earmarked for it - would you say it was unethical, poor practice, and all about looking after favourites rather than getting the best candidate for the job?

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Those who want Cameron may get their wish. The word is that, believe it or not, the club wants someone with intimate knowledge of the club (i.e. a former player or assistant). Others, Sanderson and Hinkley for example, will be interviewed but that's the way it's going apparently.

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

I'm gutted!!!!

Rocket has brought professionalism and stability to our club, we earned the respect of the competition under him. If they appoint Cameron I will have to think very hard if I want to stay a member. :(

sorry mate not trying to stir you up, i just remember you not being happy when rocket didnt get re-appointed

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

I am confident whoever the Bulldogs choose as their next senior coach that it will be the best candidate possible as the selection panel is very high quality. I would like to know outside of Leon Cameron who they are officially interviewing with Burns, Neeld, Sanderson, Hinkley, Goodwin and Simpson being good outside options for new direction.
