Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

When appointing a coach the reality is who may be a good coach in one club may not be in another. It's just the dynamics of the group.

FWIW whenever I have attended any coaching course where Leon Cameron was presenting he was very impressive in that he knew where football was heading, was working on strategies to negate or take advantage of and was very strong in his conviction.

He has completed the highest level of coaching accreditation and went to Hawtdorn to broaden his experience.

I have been to other courses with a variety of other assistant coaches and really the only other one who really impressed me was Brendan McCartney when hes was at Geelong

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Do you think they will announce if Cameron or another is still involved with another club still in finals ?

I think the moment the decision is made we will make the announcement.
Other clubs have lost assistant coaches just before finals and we have no reason to do any other club a favor.

I'm a little surprised that you have endorsed Cameron but you have explained all your reasons well enough.

The problem some will have with a Cameron appointment would be the potential that he is seen as 'Rocket Lite'.

My concerns is what I have already pointed out but we do need a coach that can also sell the club to the media, fans and sponsors and I think that is a genuine weakness in the Cameron application.

He's no Mark Harvey but he's also no Rocket in that regard.

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Leon still seems to be the favorite to take our senior coaching spot

I like it

He served us well as a very young vice-captain in the 90's and a former Best and Fairest

I was left with impression he spent everything during his games much like Crossy (different skill set Crossy more of a ball finder Cameron less of a ball finder but nice foot disposal skills)

I always thought he was sharp when he was an assistant coach

Was our midfield coach for many years under Eade

Was responsible for reviewing the games, win loss or draw.

From what I have seen reported Leon ticks a lot of boxes and rightfully has to seek to tick those of the external voice on the coach selection panel, former Geelong Premiership Captain Tom Harley.

I'm also happy with the selection panel this time, Fantasia, Garlick, Grant, Harley and board member Walsh

I was a bit concerned last time when after interviewing candidate number "1" Eade that Robert Wall's as part of a 3 person panel (Scott Clayton and someone else) decided to get Smorgon to hire him there and then.

Urgency may have made that necessary but it sort of meant the process got thrown out the window.

Eade had a good run, but at the end of the day he did not get us as close to a premiership as Wallace did in 1997 as a Rookie coach with a team that included Leon Cameron in it.

And Wallace took our team from 2nd last to 3rd in 1 season, something the bitterness of his parting with the Dog's we often overlook.

I also have fond memories of when an unknown rookie ex Bulldog player coach Terry Wheeler gave our club a good ride during the early 1990's

I know some will disagree ..so be it

But I am comfortable with a highly ambitious less experienced Leon Cameron at the club he bled for rather than some other more experienced, more expensive possibly less ambitious journeymen superannuation type coaching aspirants.

What has being vice-captain, winning a best and fairest, Wallace and Wheeler, and leaving everything on the field as a player got to do with being appointed as a coach? None have any relevance.

What is good about the selection panel? The fact that Chris Grant is one of Leon's best mates, the fact that Tom Harley has no coaching experience and is the only outsider, the fact that Garlick played alongside him, or the fact that you probably know next to nothing about board member Walsh??

Sorry, but your reasoning rings of an emotional attachment to the potential coach.

I agree with Old School, that he will be perceived as Eade-light.

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Some news report mentioned he was on our board .. are u on it too ?

Not yet, I am the 'white knight' Dimma keeps spruiking about.

Just interested that you are happy with who is on our selection committee, but have no idea who a key member of the group is.

With the Cats having the week off, Sanderson has an interview with Adelaide on Thursday and with the Bulldogs on Friday. :thumbsu:

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

the club wants someone with intimate knowledge of the club (i.e. a former player or assistant).
Who is "the club". Smorgon, Garlick, Fantasia? All the above?

What does that intimate knowledge that they want really provide over and above an outsider anyway? Each players personality traits, strengths, weaknesses, club culture ... these can all be communicated, there's people already (or should already be) there with that kind of information which can be passed on to whoever gets the role. On the other hand, something like the intellectual property of recent premiership teams cannot be taught or passed on.

IMO the IP that someone like Neeld would bring would almost be worth more than his contract.

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Not worth debating, decision has been made.

They would not have let Eade go without already speaking to the replacement.

You just have to look at the review panel to know Cameron has the job.

Would have prefer someone outside myself yet happy to give Cameron a go.

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

Like the sound of Mark Neeld and Brenton Sanderson. Hopefully, the decision hasn't already been made.

I wouldn't expect a Bulldog director to be a peanut eating monkey

Football Op's Manager - Ex Captain - CEO - Ex recent Dual Premiership Captain of another club - Board Member

Seems lot a good mix to me as I put in my opening post.

I post on these forums in good faith without getting worried if they leave a mark on your piddling post Rover.

Sydney Swans could have looked at Roos subsequent appointment to Eade that way, it ended in a Premiership 3 years later.

Pretty hard to get media attention until you take up a senior coaching position. With the exception of Nathan Buckley and previously Michael Voss, Cameron's media profile seems to be on par with most of the other Assistant Coaches vying for Senior Coaching spots right now.

Although I will admit Paul Williams presents well to the media and should not be discounted also as a strong contender for the coaching spot.

According to SNF McCartney was supposed to present to the club today, so hopefully we should know one way or another soon. Personally, of the four names circulated I hope McCartney gets appointed.

Ex-captain who is a close friend of the so-called major candidate.
CEO who played alongside the so-called major candidate.
What is Walsh's background, and how is he qualified to be on the coach-selection committee?
A premiership captain of another club is still not someone with coaching experience - why Harley, when last time we used Walls? We could use Parkin, Pagan, Roos, Matthews, etc, etc

I know a fair bit about Williams and Cameron. Does anyone have more information and insights on Sanderson and McCartney? Hard to find a decent summary.

Re: Leon Cameron my choice for coach

We have a bloke on the selection panel that should have his position at the club under serious review, such has been his incompetence in list management and player contract negotiations.

We are a flophouse at the moment.

WE have been a flophouse ever since Campbell Rose moved on. With Campbell we looked and acted professional. We have been going backwards since.

I believe you are not referring to Smorgon but the 'fish stinks from the head down'. Before Rose he made a series of poor appointments. We dont get a say in who will be the next CEO, Football director or CFO. Smorgo does.

Smorgo has tried his guts out for us. But like he moved on Eade its now time for him to move on. 'We need to freshen up' to quote the man.

That decision was forced by the major sponsors as the Swans wanted Wallace but Roos won the right people over

Not sure I agree. Neeld has been impressive on Foxtel on a regular basis and the likes of Richardson (Carlton) on SEN.
The fact is Cameron isn't a strong public speaker which is sort of a requirement for our club. The content of what he says might be OK but he won't be a convincing presenter to the media, sponsors or coteries.
It's a gap in his appointment if we are to believe all the rumors that it's his job to lose.

Brenton Sanderson

Coaching Career
Geelong: Asst Coach 2007-
Port Adel: Asst Coach 2006

The 2009 season marked Brenton’s third as an assistant coach with the Cats as Geelong returned to the grand final. The season also marked his 14th campaign at Skilled Stadium, where he spent 11 years and 199 games as a player. Sanderson spent the 2006 season as development coach at Port Adelaide, ironically it was the Power that Geelong defeated to take the 2007 flag.
He was charged with working with the Power’s young players, with four of them breaking through to earn rising star nominations in 2006.

Brendan McCartney

Switched to Essendon after 11 seasons as an assistant at Geelong and will take on more of a match-day role with the Bombers. Is renowned for his teaching skills, having been a development coach at Richmond for two seasons before his time at the Cats. Will look after the attacking aspects of the game-plan, including the forwards.

I hope we go for Sanderson personally, but McCartney sounds alright.

McCartney has the more experience, but Sanderson has coached under Mark Thompson and now Chris Scott under dominant teams of the past 5 seasons.
In reality, come October he could be an assistant in 4 GFs for 3 flags!
