Rumour Ollie Wines - will he go or will he stay?

I know wines is a handy player and all. But when we needed to win centre clearances in the prelim where was he...we needed him to win those...cause hes not in the side for run and carry or anything else. With rocky, boak and Robbie you can say there too old But not wines he should peak winning the midfield in finals

He was legit one of the best on ground in the toughest game of the year, and he polled 3 votes in the 2nd toughest game of the season against Richmond last time. #1 disposals on ground, 2nd kicks (not a huge handball to kick ratio), equal 6th on ground for pressure acts. Better than 6 of the top 10 disposal getters on the ground in disp efficiency which people want to knock him on. Equal 2nd in clearances with 4 (5 was bog) Wines took a steaming shit on Cotchin, despite the media wanting to hype up his performance. He'll have a blinder in round 1, and you'll all come back and say you never doubted him and get cranky and any perceived disloyalty from here if he dares to look elsewhere. He's a 100kg battleship who plays 65-70% game time every week. He can't win every clearance. Maybe your ire is better placed elsewhere, like a certain forward who apparently gets to have 5 possession games again and again and you all say he's doing his job because he's Sir John Monash leading a diversionary attack while Dixon has 10 million turks in Port's base machine gunning him to death.

Last 7 minutes of the game he and Rozee were stuck on the bench, trying to get back on. But runners not being able to send out messages meant we were stuffed.

Yep, stuck on the bench - no goals and no changes- two of our best players on the bench for half a quarter. How different things could have been to have Ollie and CR running around in that last 7 minutes 😥

I know no runners sucks.

But surely this is another example of our players lacking match awareness in big games?

They should have known to rotate.

Geez, I didn't realise that. Rozee 'could' have made all the difference. You think you'd just about drag anyone off that was closest to the interchange (except Ruck or KPP).

But how do you do it if the play is on the other side of the ground, you can't order a runner go out there and players are so focussed they don't look at the bench and don't want to incase they get dragged.

Have to have a policy and its directed at player X, Y and Z at the 3/4 time break, that they have to look to the bench at the 15 minute mark of the quarter and check every two minutes with the bench to co-ordinate things.

Agreed. You'd think being a professional sport something would already be in place, but you see good players stuck off the field trying to get back on with most teams at some stage.

why coudn't the runners send messages for 7 whole minutes?

  • As per the 2019 season, runners are permitted to enter the playing arena after a goal has been scored, however must be off, or making their way off the arena as the umpire commences their approach to bounce the ball to restart play.
  • Clubs will also be permitted to use a runner an additional two times per quarter for a maximum of ninety (90) seconds each time during live play.
  • Runners are not permitted to be on the ground at any time during the final three (3) minutes of each quarter (except after goals) and this applies irrespective of whether the additional two instances have been used or not.
There were no goals scored, and I'd presume we'd already used our runner twice as stated. In a close game, probably should have had left one of our allowed runner uses toward the end of the qtr.

Heres an idea. How about using those electronic boards with the red and green numbers to signify who comes off and who goes on like they do in soccer

Surely now that runners cant go on unless theres a goal, and the lack of goals scored in some periods of games something like that must be used

Im sure ive seen some teams use them but never Port. Having 2 of our best players sitting on the bench for half a quarter at that pivotal moment is beyond stupid.

Plus side is that Wines and Rozee are nice and fresh for next week.

Runners dont pull players off the ground generally anymore, its all done by time and players know around what time of each quarter they should be going off and on.

I would assume Rozee and Wines went off when Ladhams goaled and then weren't able to get back on the ground. I'd have to watch the last few minutes again to work out why. There was a lot of play on the outer wing and a lot of stoppages in our forward line which probably would have made it difficult to get players off the ground.

A billion dollar industry occasionally holding up home made red cardboard signs when digital boards have been manufactured for sporting clubs to use on the sidelines for decades is all sorts of bizarre.

There’s probably private schools in Adelaide using them for their soccer teams
