This is where the façade of "equalisation" comes falling down.

If Hawthorn want O'Meara or the other Gold Coast player, or Tom Mitchell they will get them.

All they have to give up is pick 25 or 35 or whatever it is, and bang they have a ready made star midfielder to add to their strong list. Maybe they might even have to give up as many as two draft picks for a ready made star player... jeepers...what a sacrifice!

Hawthorn doesn't have to give up anything of any real note to add to their team. A draft pick in the 20s or 30s is no real pain or sacrifice for them.
Until the AFL fix the trading system this type of stuff will continue. The NRL system is far more "equitable" than this façade of "equalisation".

The Brian Lake trade is a signpost of what is to come. And people wonder why Hawthorn will win their 4th flag in a row...

"Such fantastic people management" is what the media tell us over and over again.
Hawthorn have one of the best in the land in "Jack" Russell.

He's gotten 5+ years out of a broken down Burgoyne when most thought he'd struggle to play out a 2 yr contract....he's taken a kid in the first round who had a busted leg that again, many said would never play senior AFL footy, yet here is running out for his 3rd game this week....He got three years out of Lake when lots of people were lining up to say he was finished at the Bulldogs....and he's done a power of work wth Rioli to keep him on the park....

Why should Hawthorn be denied trade targets because they take the risks?

Hawthorn and Russell would back themselves in to get O'Meara right, and the prospect of this as well as the new Dingley training base might just be what O'Meara is looking for.

Why?
He is originally from WA.
Lol. You must be being obtuse on purpose, the very fact that a player from interstate is leaving after all that shows they'd be best off trying to get homegrown talent so they don't get royally bent over(just so happens they've got a much smaller pool to select from than the rest of us, they need the academies).

You forgot one club Nicky???

.... You know where he's going :D ... I told ya this 6 months ago ... bookmark it! :thumbsu:

Nearly impossible for him to get to the Hawks IMO

Unless they going to give up Breust or another quality player AND a pick they can't get him

The Suns will not fold on this and won't have to so meant teams below the Hawks will have more tool to get him

I agree but also disagree.
O'Meara isnt leaving GC because he is home sick or else he would go to Freo or WCE.
He is leaving because he wants to come to Melbourne. He has investments properties here as well as his gf.

JOM's value is completely and utterly skewed because of the 2 first rounders the Pies gave for Treloar. No player is worth a clubs 2 first rounders regardless of how good a player he is.

JOM if up and running is a much better player than Treloar. But he is still not worth 2 first rounders. I'm happy for the Tiges to do the Prestia / JOM double...2 first rounders. Pick 6 this year and whatever next year.

High risk but very very high reward with JOM. This kid is special if he can get on the park.

No, they have a pool of the same size to select from, it is then up to them to convince players to stay.

Couldn't agree more. No way should a club be penalised for great recruiting. Afl should butt out!

GC are kidding themselves. Breust? Unless he wants out he won't be going anywhere.
As I said before one first rounder + Hartung which is overs anyway. The dude has dicky knees.

Just look at this. Never seen a more composed player at pace since Chris Judd. There's a goal against Hawthorn he kicked on the run too that was utterly classy but I can't find it

Even if he spends 2 years injured, getting 4-5 seasons of him at top flight are worth it

I stay stuff O'Meara, let him go in the draft to somewhere he doesn't want to go. Suns have to make a stance.
Club has forked out a heap of cash on his development and rehabilitation for what will be to the benefit of another club. It would be different if he had given good service to the Suns.

Collingwood did not give two first rounders for Treloar. It was a first rounder and a trade down from first to second. Massive difference.

And Treloar had played 80 games for GWS.

O'Meara has played 44 games and none in the past two seasons. These players are not remotely comparable except that they happen to have been drafted by foundation clubs.

He may be worth a first round pick for a club ballsy/stupid enough to take a punt, if they have need.

Yeah cos the Suns can really afford to give him away for nothing...Bombers will gobble him up and he'll be happy.

The Suns also can't afford to become a feeder team for the Vic clubs, putting a few years into developing kids from the draft only to have the good ones leave town at the first chance they get.

I hate the MLB policy where teams own the rights to a player for 7 years after their debut (far too long) but maybe the AFL needs something like that to avoid this situation where the Suns have very little leverage with a player they have invested a pile of time and money in and who they saw as a future leader of the team.

Its going to happen anyway. Players change clubs all the time. They need to maximise their trade value and develop a decent culture internally to make players want to stay....and to the best of my knowledge they have salary cap advantage to help them do that. Some will walk, you just move on. There is no moral highground to be gained by forcing O'Meara into the draft and giving up a valuable player and or pick. They need to be professional about this like the Crows did with Dangerfield and the Giants did with Treloar. Or indeed Geelong was with Ablett.

2 first rounders is a reach given his injury history. but that said this is 2016. medical technology has never been better. look at someone like robbie gray and the problems that he had earlier in his career. i think first rounder and a player who's better than steak knives is about right

Sure, it happens. It's just players are walking at an unsustainable rate for the Qld clubs. How do the Suns have a chance to be competitive if they have to grin and bear it when the players they would build their team around for the next 3-5 years keep asking for trades to heartland clubs?

I agree they should make the trade to get something out this. I also think the current system isn't working for them and if we want a national league that needs to change.

There isn't systemic racism working directly against white players in local leagues.

How many times do you hear, hrmm should this indigenous player be drafted, can he fit within the AFL culture? As if the first Australians need to fit into the AFL culture, no thought to (shock horror) us fitting into their culture.

There's your answer.
SRP board but don't they always say the game is bigger than the individual. So why change to accommodate the minority?

The NSW clubs are doing OK. The QLD clubs need to look internally at what mistakes they have made. The Lions won three flags and have zero legacy to show for it. They cant keep blaming the Vic clubs for stealing their players....thats too simplistic.

I think the fact that the player who might be leaving is not leaving to go to their state of origin inficates that the "go home factor" isn't really a factor here, but moreso Gold Coast's culture, facilities and relative lack of success.
