List Mgmt. OOC 2021, who is playing for their careers 2021 edition?

As a fan we tend to look at only what they bring on the field. It would appear we need to have a better understanding what they offer off the field. Perhaps it is something that Lions media could step up in.

In comparing Matho to Lester you need to compare at the same stage of their careers.

i hope Joyce and Ely(who is contracted for 2022) stay. I hope Ballenden stays also for another year. For those reasons, and form of late I would like to see Birchall retire, we need the list spot.
Can all of them stay? We need at least three gone. Even if Archie and Birchall both go we'd need to axe someone else. It'd have to be Brock Smith.

+1 more if we're keeping Kalin.

Doesn't upgrading one rookie to the senior roster count as one list change?
At the moment he's in a separate category - a rookie spot was basically created for him because we had a senior player (Rayner) out for the year.

After list changes we need to fit our players in the normal list limits as that "bonus" rookie spot goes away. Effectively what that means is an extra delisting is required.

Effectively we need four delistings to ensure, Kalin stays, Madden is upgraded and two draft picks. Our excess draft picks we have will need to be converted into next year's draft to build our points to match bids on Ashcroft and Fletcher. Any extra spaces will have to come via trades. Our list is tight and space (salary wise) to bring in established players from other teams is not even a consideration.

Unfortunately Eric's injury allows that spot to continue

Only if we designate Eric as out for the year which I hope isn't the case. Eric's injury does make it easier to keep Madden as a Cat B rookie though, since we can upgrade him for most of the year.

I wonder 🤔

I believe we can do it with just 3 delistings.

Birchall and Archie delisted from the rookie list, Brock Smith delisted from the senior list.

Move CEY and Ely to the rookie list.

Upgrade Kalin Lane to the senior list.

All other rookies stay on the rookie list as per the AFL’s rule for this/next season.

Draft two kids in the first round

Technically yes, but I would be surprised if the team moves Kalin on to the senior list as it could tie our hands further down the track.

We can always move him back to the rookie list next year.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a bit of a list clear out next year.

CEY
Ely
Joyce
Tom Berry
Answerth
McFadyen
Robinson

All would be under pressure to perform and show something next year.

Time for a Who is playing for their careers 2022 edition already?

So we upgrade Connor Ballenden back to the Senior list and leave Kalin on the Rookie list?

I do still hold out a great deal of hope for Answerth.

Where?

He’s not a like for like replacement with Birchall.

He doesn’t offer as much as Keidean in defence.

If Starcevich moves in to the midfield, sure.

At this stage I see him as depth at best.
Every club needs depth.
That’s what makes good clubs.
I think sometimes we all forget just how good a lock down defender he was.
And I for one would love to see Starce move into the centre or onto a wing.

With Madden as depth and Prior possibly moving to defense, I think Answerth is in need of picking up a new role. He may not survive as a small defender depth unfortunately, this is even if Starce moves to midfield or wing.

You're assuming the delisting-free version of demotion to the rookie list persists. I actually expect it to go away, and any move of a player to the rookie list will revert to requiring the player to pass through the ND and/or PSD.

So if we shuffle him up with the expectation of shuffling him down, we'd have to be prepared to lose him if he's shown any promise. And if he's not shown any promise he'd probably just be delisted. Seems like a lose-lose situation.

I think Starcevich could develop into more of a distributor. He’s a great kick

Putting aside all of the rookie juggling for a moment, here are the only options to delist this year.
You would think we need at least 4 off the list. That could be 3 first rounders, plus a third rounder. That assumes Neale is traded for one net extra pick.

Grant Birchall - desperately hoping he goes. Keeping him ahead of a kid who might just do something would be shortsighted. Even his defenders surely wouldn't say he is the flag difference.
Tom Fullarton - Keep. Has shown signs. Seems extremely unlikely to go given he played both finals.
Archie Smith - has to be a de-list. Has had enough time. Could not get a game even with injuries.
Connor Ballenden - suggest de-list. Has had four years on the system. Even when we had McStay and Hipwood go down could not get a game. A great kick but what else?
Thomas Joyce - Injury interruption in his 3 years. Plays like Neale so i say keep, gets 1 year. One of him or Brock Smith has to go though.
James Madden - must keep
Brock Smith - Borderline. Have not seen enough of him. Club can make the call on keeping him or Joyce. Pick 33 and only had 2 years but seems to have not progressed?
Keidean Coleman - must keep
Kalin Lane - Keep considering getting rid of Ballenden and Smith.

It might look like we don't have many ruck options. But what is the point in keeping Archie Smith if we are not using him? Get VFL ruck time into Henry Smith and Kalin Lane. Neither of them are beanpoles. Oscar has been very durable.

It's a good year to get some top end talent in an start developing them, as there are already delists looming for next year, which is a sign our depth is a little weak. Hard to imagine keeping many of CEY, Ely Smith, Joyce, Uosis, Robinson, McFadyen. Happy for any of them to have career best seasons but realistically they are coming from a long way back, except Robbo of course.

I believe Birchall will retire
Fullarton is a definite keep
Madden is a keep
Hope Joyce is kept and Ballenden, but unlikely both

I rate Answerth. Can definitely see him being best 22 again once he's fit. He is great defensively but let himself down a bit with his ball use. He has pace, probably more so than Coleman (who is only several months younger). He will be a nice addition to defensive mix next year with Prior hopefully.
