Lester was/is a good club person and was kept on when many thought he was gone. Matho is following a similar path.

Was about to post exactly this. Looks like we found another Lester. He's happy to stay as depth and we're happy that he wants to stay. Works for both of us.

The club was obviously happy with what he did in the games where he was called up. He's living in Queensland and looks at what the players in Vic and NSW have to go through this year and probably thinks he's on a fair enough wicket.

Can't have the first year players learning off and playing around the second & third year players in the VFL. The only thing you'll be learning is how to lose. Need a touch of experience in there too. Happy for Matho, also think this will be why Birchall may get another year, it won't be to play all year in the senior side.

Bought a place for his parents, feels settled, looks like he'll be a 2s leader who will find his role along the way.

Dont put any $ on him retiring any time soon either. (Just my opinion)
UP until 6 or so weeks ago was neutral on Birch, but I would now be disappointed if he went around again, taking a list spot that could go to a young bloke. I have seen i think, enough from Coleman to suggest he could do something similar to Birchall. That said hope Birchall has a great game on Sat and we go on and win the flag and he retires

I'm happy for Matho and there's no denying he's a great clubman. Two years, though? I was a little taken aback. I don't think he'll ever be best 22 in a healthy roster, whereas someone who gets delisted might be.

This probably means the end of the road for Tom Joyce, especially if Birchall isn't retiring, which is a pity because I thought he had something to offer going forward. Ely might get shipped out for a token pick also now.

He was woeful on the weekend he has no poise at all and just bangs it on the boot . He is a reserves grade footyballer at best . We are not winning any premiership with mathison even close to best 22 staggered he has been given 2 years . Obviously now keeping blokes on that appear to be good for team morale over genuine talent .

Joyce is probably still a maybe. Brock Smith would be a goner though.

Brock, Archie, Connor and maybe Birchall are gone.

CEY, Ely and Kalin on to the rookie list (or traded in Ely's case).

Gives us three senior spots (Brock, CEY and Ely) which is what we need, and no rookie spots (if Birchall stays, Ely would have to be traded to fit in).

Which Connor are we talking about? The club rates McFadyen quiet highly. So I’m guessing you mean Ballenden? A couple of clubs had a small sniff last year. If he doesn’t get picked up maybe rookie list him for one more year?

I wonder if CEY had a trigger to reach to get his 3rd year? Which you wouldn’t think he would have met.
Either that or we pay him out.
3 years straight up seemed a big contract with his injury history.

Connor McFadyen has recently extended for another year.

How many draft picks do we have to make? If it's three, that means we'll be counting on Lane to be our backup ruck, and I'm concerned we'll be putting too much responsibility on him too early if Oscar gets hurt or suspended in future.

Agree. You could say the same with Matho as well but not on the same degree.

Not wanting to spoil a good story with the facts BUT, no he didnt buy his folks a place. He helped get them one but his parents bought it.
Makes more sense, I wouldn't think Rhys would be on enough coin to be able to afford to buy anyone a decent house in Brisbane.

There’s quite a few people who mention trading Ely.

Try and think of one team that would trade for Ely. Even if it was a 5th round pick, so all Ely is doing is taking up a list spot and salary cap on another team.

I can’t think of any.

I guess people are just hoping to be able to free up his list spot.
I remember hearing that there was a little interest from Essendon last year?
Would love to trade CEY as well to free up his spot but that is highly unlikely to happen either.
